Pepe Reina “will fight for his position at Liverpool”
Napoli manager Rafa Benitez has confirmed that the Serie A club have been priced out of making their loan move for goalkeeper Pepe Reina permanent.
Reina spent the 2013/14 campaign on-loan at the Stadio San Paolo after being ousted from his spot as Liverpool goalkeeper by the signing of Simon Mignolet last summer.
In an interview with radio station talkSPORT, Benitez confirmed that Reina will return to Anfield.
“Pepe has two years left on his contract at Liverpool,” he said. “He has to go back and he’ll stay there. We can’t afford Pepe’s wages.
“The Premier League is a very big league and, in Serie A, we don’t pay big wages like in England. He will have to fight for his position at Liverpool.”
31-year-old Reina, who is currently in Brazil on international duty with Spain, recently admitted he was unsure of his future following the end of his loan spell in Italy.
“Right now I’m only thinking of La Roja,” Reina said to Spanish radio station Cadena Ser last month, with quotes picked up by The Independent .

“With regards to a new club, I will first have to speak to Liverpool.
“My season on loan at Napoli has been very positive and I thank the Napoli people and the club.”
“I will return to be a Liverpool player but I think I’m not in the coaching plans.”
Reina was the first choice keeper at Anfield for eight years after being signed by Benitez from Spanish side Villarreal in 2005. He made 395 appearances for the club.
What does the future hold for Reina? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.

England XI: Hart; Johnson, Cahill,Jagielka, Baines; Gerrard, Henderson, Lallana, Sterling; Lambert, Sturridge (midfield diamond).
JOSEPH COPELAND:
Overall Winner: Uruguay. Luis Suarez is in the form of his life, and it seems like nothing can stop him. It’s also time for Edinson Cavani to be played as a true forward for his country, not a winger. If the Cavani-Suarez partnership is properly formed, it will be hard to stop this team going forward.
Runner-Up: Germany. More frustration for one of the football richest countries in the world. They can overcome injuries to reach the Final, but that’s where they’ll run out of steam.
Surprise Package: Brazil will not make the Quarterfinals. They have plenty of flair, but the pressure of hosting a World Cup is more than this young group have had to endure and they will lose to the Netherlands in the Round of 16. As a result, the host nation will fall apart with stunned supporters wreaking havoc across the land.
England: I can’t see England getting out of Group D. Uruguay and Italy are better overall squads, and it will show. A win over Costa Rica will not be enough to ease the heat on Roy Hodgson following the early exit.
Tournament Top Goalscorer: This is simple, Luis Suarez. Followed closely by Arjen Robben from Holland and Thomas Muller for Germany.
England XI: Hart, Johnson, Cahill, Jagielka, Baines, Gerrard (C), Sterling, Wilshere, Milner, Rooney, Sturridge.
Check back later when three of the This Is Anfield team share their more in-depth previews and World Cup predictions.
