Philippe Coutinho offered new Liverpool contract

Liverpool are hopeful that Brazilian attacker Philippe Coutinho will sign a new deal with the club, Brendan Rodgers confirmed on Monday night.

Coutinho has been a first-team regular since his move from Inter Milan in January 2013, scoring eight times in 50 appearances for the Reds.

Speaking after Liverpool’s 3-1 defeat to Manchester United in a pre-season friendly in Miami, Rodgers confirmed the club have put a new deal for the 22-year-old on the table.

“I am not sure when it will be done. I haven’t spoken to any of the directors in the last few days so I am not sure where we are on that, but obviously he is someone we want to tie up for a period of time,” he is quoted in the Daily Mail as saying.

“I am sure I will hear more about it when I get back on Tuesday.”

Liverpool will arrive home from their tour of the USA on Tuesday afternoon, with Rodgers hailing the stateside trip a success.

With just one pre-season friendly to go, against Borussia Dortmund at Anfield on Sunday, 10th August, the new Premier League season looms large for Liverpool.

One player continuing his form of 2013/14 this summer has been Raheem Sterling and Rodgers was delighted with his performance against Man United on Monday night.

“I thought he was outstanding and was a real threat,” the 41-year-old Northern Irishman told press. “Raheem is tactically aware for such a young player and is so exciting to watch. When he runs at defenders he creates many opportunities.

“At 19 years of age he is a real talent and is getting better all the time.”

Brendan Rodgers hails Liverpool’s US tour a success as players return to Merseyside

Liverpool players will arrive back on Merseyside on Tuesday following their tour of the USA with manager Brendan Rodgers taking all the positives from the pre-season campaign.

The Reds have just one friendly remaining before the Premier League gets underway on Sunday, August 17th. They host Bundesliga runners-up Borussia Dortmund at Anfield this Sunday, 10th August.

Liverpool tour of the USA was more an exercise in commercial growth in the American market for the club’s brand, but Rodgers was only interested in the progress of his players.

Despite ending the tour in a 3-1 defeat to Manchester United on Monday night, Rodgers believes his players are in a good place to start the season.

“I thought it was a really good game and both teams have had a very good workout out here,” Rodgers told press after the game.

“I thought we were well worth the lead and had a couple more chances to increase that and it looked like maybe we should have had another penalty.

“We conceded a disappointing equaliser and then very quickly conceded another one so the game started to get stretched a bit, but overall I’m delighted with the whole tournament and what it’s done for us.

“We have worked very hard and we will leave here with plenty of positives and look forward to the new season.

“The condition of the players that we have at the moment is very good. We’ve obviously got a few missing but certainly by Southampton we will be ready and we are looking forward to it.”

Prior to Monday night, Liverpool had lost to Roma 1-0 in Boston, beaten Olympiacos 1-0 in Chicago, beaten Manchester City on penalties after a 2-2 draw in New York and overcome AC Milan 2-0 in Charlotte.

Brendan Rodgers names a strong side, with several first-team players returning to the line-up.

Martin Skrtel and Mamadou Sakho start in the centre of defence, while Glen Johnson will play at left-back.

Steven Gerrard, Joe Allen and Jordan Henderson are the midfield trio, with Philippe Coutinho and Raheem Sterling alongside Rickie Lambert up front.

Liverpool: Mignolet, Kelly, Skrtel, Sakho, Johnson, Gerrard, Allen, Henderson, Coutinho, Lambert, Sterling.

International Champions Cup final: Manchester United beat Liverpool 3-1 in Miami

Darren Fletcher and Wayne Rooney lift the International Champions Cup

Wayne Rooney was among the scorers as Manchester United beat Liverpool 3-1 in the International Champions Cup in Miami.

United rallied from a half-time deficit with second-half goals from captain Rooney, Juan Mata and youngster Jesse Lingard securing the trophy for new boss Louis van Gaal.

Liverpool began strongly and took the lead in the 14th minute when United defender Phil Jones upended Raheem Sterling in the box and skipper Steven Gerrard scored from the spot.

David de Gea made a fine save to deny Philippe Coutinho and Sterling felt he should have had a second penalty when he was brought down by Ander Herrera.

Rickie Lambert made a hash of a chance to add to their lead before half-time and United proved to be in a much more ruthless mood in the second period.

It took them until the 55th minute to level the scores with Rooney side-footing home a cushioned volley at the back post from a Javier Hernandez cross.

Two minutes later, United were in front with Mata striking a shot from the edge of the box that took a deflection off Mamadou Sakho and flew past Simon Mignolet.

United were given a third goal soon after, Rooney again on target from close range, but video replays inside the stadium showed Ashley Young's looping effort had hit the back stanchion of the net, not the crossbar, and rebounded to Rooney.

Referee Mark Geiger consulted with his assistant and the goal was chalked off.

But they did go 3-1 up in the closing stages with Lingard sealing victory in the eight-team tournament which also involved Manchester City, his strike from 18 yards ensuring United remain unbeaten in pre-season under their new manager.
