Ahead of Liverpool’s FA Cup semi-final against Aston Villa at Wembley this Sunday, Brendan Rodgers says going all the way and lifting the trophy would be a continuation of his side’s recent success.

Rodgers could end his third year on the Anfield hot seat in FA Cup glory should the Reds beat Aston Villa this weekend and the winner of Arsenal vs Reading in the final in May.

The Northern Irishman, speaking at his press conference at Melwood on Friday to preview Sunday’s showdown, explained the importance of becoming the latest in a long line of trophy-winning Liverpool managers.

He is quoted by the club’s official website as saying, “It’s a very long list of managers here that have been very successful in different eras and different times.

“Hopefully, I’ll be judged on my time here – however long that is – on that we’ve worked well and a part of that will be having won trophies.

“It’s one game at a time and we have to get over a very difficult game against Aston Villa before we can even think of that.

“The players are in good form and a good moment now. We’ll look forward to the game.”

After finishing 2013/14 with a Premier League title charge, finsihing second to Manchester City, Rodgers now hopes to win the FA Cup and would see it as a sign of progress, despite a difficult season in the league.

“To win a trophy here at Liverpool is something that’s very important – that’s why we’re here,” he added. “No matter what era you’re in, you’ll always be judged here at Liverpool on trophies. We’ve made steps over the last couple of years and we want to continue making those by winning trophies.

“It is something we want to do for the supporters. It’s an incredible support we get here and we want to send them home happy having arrived in another final, hopefully.”

Aston Villa vs Liverpool in the FA Cup semi-final gets underway at 3pm on Sunday, 19th April 2015 and is live on BT Sport 1 in the UK.
