Liverpool's Emre Can scored as Germany were held to a 1-1 draw by Serbia on day one of the European U21 Championship.
Serbia made the perfect start when Filip Djuricic, who was on loan at Southampton during the second half of the season, danced his way through the Germany defence in the eighth minute before beating Barcelona goalkeeper Marc Andre ter Stegen with a low finish.
Germany were back on level terms nine minutes later when Can, who was playing in central midfield, fired in from the edge of the penalty area.
Christian Gunter was sent off midway through the second-half as Serbia pushed for a winner but Germany held on for a hard fought point.
Eslewhere, hosts Czech Republic suffered a 2-1 defeat to Denmark in the opening game of the tournament.
Full-back Pavel Kaderabek gave the Czechs the perfect start when he curled an effort into the bottom corner in the 35th minute.
However, Denmark hit back after the break through centre-back Jannik Vestergaard’s header and were ahead through substitute Pione Sisto’s close range effort with just six minutes remaining.
The home side thought they had an equaliser through Michal Travnik but his effort was ruled offside.
