Brendan Rodgers has said although it was disappointing that Liverpool did not take advantage of the extra man against Newcastle, a point away at St James’ Park was pleasing given the context.

The Reds fell behind twice during the 2-2 draw on Saturday lunchtime, either side of a red card to Newcastle’s Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa for bringing down Luis Suarez in the penalty area.

Many of Liverpool’s players had just returned from international duty, with Luis Suarez, for example having played at high-altitude Ecuador before a pulsating ninety minutes against Argentina in midweek.

Rodgers told the club’s official website after the game, “It’s a little bit of frustration in terms of not getting the three points.

“But on the back of an international break and with 13 players away and some not coming back until Thursday night, to come over to St James’ Park is never an easy place to come. To go behind twice in the game and to come back and then show moments of real quality I was pleased with.

“It’s a point that we’ll hopefully look back on at the end of the season and say is a good point having been behind twice.”

Meanwhile a couple of Reds players took to Twitter after the game to share their post-match thoughts:
