Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho got on the scoresheet twice on Tuesday night to help France turn a 2-0 deficit around against Ukraine and qualify for World Cup 2014.

France’s chances from the first leg defeat in Kiev were slim, but two goals from Sakho either side of a Karim Benzema strike gave the French a 3-0 win on the night in Paris.

Sakho’s second goal was later classified as an own goal by Oleg Gusev.

Elsewhere, Steven Gerrard and Daniel Sturridge started in England’s 1-0 defeat to Germany at Wembley.

Roy Hodgson’s side went down to a first half Per Mertesacker header that beat the outstretched Joe Hart.

Earlier in the evening Raheem Sterling scored twice for England Under-21s as they demolished San Mario U21s 9-0.

Martin Skrtel’s Slovakia were held to a 0-0 draw by UEFA’s newest competing nation, Gibraltar. It was Gibraltar’s first ever competitive game.
