Liverpool are on a roll after high-scoring victories against Norwich City, West Ham, Tottenham and Cardiff, but finish the year with two difficult trips to Manchester City and Chelsea.

Boxing Day’s mouthwatering clash at the City of Manchester Stadium is live on BT Sport and Brendan Rodgers will be hoping to claim a victory to ensure Liverpool go into Sunday’s game at Chelsea as league leaders.

The opposition

Manchester City are also in good form though with recent wins over both Bayern Munich and Arsenal. City have won all eight Premier League games at home so far this season.

They return to Manchester off the back of a 4-2 win over Fulham at Craven Cottage on Saturday afternoon.

However, Manuel Pellegrini’s side are without leading scorer Sergio Aguero who could be out until the end of January with a leg muscle problem.

In last year’s fixture, Liverpool held Man City to a 2-2 draw at the City of Manchester Stadium. Having turned the game around from a 1-0 deficit thanks to goals from Steven Gerrard and Daniel Sturridge, Aguero struck late to salvage a point for the home side.

Team news

This time round, Liverpool have no Gerrard or Sturridge, but Luis Suarez is in the form of his life, having scored 19 goals in his opening 12 games of the campaign.

Jon Flanagan should continue at left-back, and Mamadou Sakho‘s increasingly confident performances surely put him ahead of Daniel Agger in central defence for this post-Christmas footballing feast.
