The late Hillsborough justice campaigner Anne Williams was paid tribute to during Sunday night’s BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards ceremony.

Anne was at the forefront of battling for a new inquest to be held for her 15-year-old son Kevin, who died at Hillsborough in 1989.

She found witnesses who heard Kevin say “Mum” at 4.00pm that fateful day, 45 minutes after original inquest into the disaster had claimed he was dead by.

Her bravery and enduring love was recognised when the Helen Rollason Award was accepted on her behalf by her daughter Sara, son Michael, and brother Danny.

“My mum embodied the very reason this award was created – strength, determination and passion,” said Sara.

“Her tireless campaigning was driven by the love she had for her son Kevin and her dedication to seeking a new inquest,” added Sara. “If anyone triumphed over adversity, it’s my mum.”

Anne died aged 60 in April 2013.
