Report: Liverpool make move for Brazilian Romulo – but is he injury-prone?

Liverpool are hoping to agree a deal with Spartak Moscow midfielder Romulo, according to Metro.

Romelu is predominantly a defensive midfielder — just the position Liverpool need to strengthen right now due to Lucas Leiva’s latest injury setback.

Jamie Sanderson writes on the Metro’s website:

According to reports in Russia, Liverpool have approached Spartak and asked them to name a price for the Brazilian defensive midfielder, who has eight caps for his country.

Sanderson believes Liverpool could be set to offer around £7 million for Romulo’s services, having missed out on Egyptian international winger Mohamed Salah to Chelsea on Thursday.

Romulo has won eight caps for Brazil, having moved to Spartak Moscow in the summer of 2012.

However, the 23-year-old has missed the best part of the last 18 months of football due to a serious knee injury.

During his press conference at Melwood ahead of Saturday’s FA Cup 4th Round tie at Bournemouth, Reds boss Brendan Rodgers spoke briefly of his transfer plans for the window.

He said he didn’t expect to sign any more defenders, but confirmed the club were tracking several targets.

He told reporters, “We don’t need to bring any more defenders in. We just need to get some of our players back fit.

“We’re missing key players, but we’ve got to manage with what we’ve got. If we can bring anyone in, great, if not, we have what we have.

“We’ve looked at a number of players, but Salah is a talented player, but we’ll see what the window brings. We’re looking at several targets.”

Liverpool go to Bournemouth this weekend with several injury problems looming after a week of illness in the Reds camp.

However, they do welcome back Jon Flanagan, who has been missing since before Christmas with a hamstring injury.

Flanagan will likely replace Glen Johnson, who has been ruled out of action for some time. Rodgers explained, “Johnson is sidelined indefinitely. Apart from that, young Flanagan is back and has been training really well.

“Glen’s got a really bad ankle, and one or two other issues which haven’t allowed him to be 100% this season.

“We’ve got no timeline on Johnson’s injury.”
