The Reds forward was on the brink of leaving Anfield at one stage, and attempted to force through an exit by publicly making it known his desire to play for a Champions League club.

But now the 27-year-old is playing the best football of his career and having a big say in Liverpool’s ambitions to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

The Reds sit fourth in the Premier League, with 11 games to go and just four points off league leaders Chelsea.

Suarez revealed that it was a personal conversation with Gerrard that gave him the confidence and mindset to stay on at Liverpool.

“He didn’t talk about me, or through me, in the press, but in person,’ Suarez is quoted in Metro as saying.

“In those moments I forgot that he was “world football great Gerrard”, a Liverpool legend, but as a humble person who spoke to me with all his heart for hours.

“He said I was the best forward he’d ever played with, which given the amazing strikers that he’s played with at Liverpool, was amazing for me to hear.

“I’ll never forget that.”

Suarez has since signed a new long-term deal with Liverpool, and manager Brendan Rodgers will be hopeful he keeps hold of the Uruguayan when the inevitable transfer speculation reignites in the summer.

After scoring 23 goals in the league this season, Suarez hasn’t scored since Liverpool’s 4-0 thrashing of Everton at Anfield last month.

He will be hoping to break that “drought” this weekend as the Reds take on Southampton at St Mary’s in the Saturday 5.30pm kick-off.
