Jamie Carragher has explained why Steven Gerrard deserves to add a league title to his medal collection before he retires.
Writing in his Daily Mail column, Carragher said “Those with his quality deserve to perform on the biggest stage and deserve to have trophy cabinets that are full to the brim.”
Gerrard, like Carragher, has won every domestic and European trophy possible while with Liverpool – except the league title.
“One title with Liverpool would mean more to him than 10 anywhere else,” he said.
Carragher discussed Gerrard’s loyalty to Liverpool, rejecting big moves to Real Madrid and Chelsea in 2009 and 2004/2005 respectively.
“His loyalty to Liverpool has been unbelievable. Had he not come from this city, I don’t think for one moment he would have stayed, particularly given that Liverpool haven’t been anywhere near the Champions League for five years.
“I don’t believe he needs the medal to cement his legacy but if you are a genuine football fan, for everything he has done over the past 15 years, you should want to see him complete his collection.”
Liverpool go into tomorrow’s clash at Old Trafford in second place, as outsiders for this year’s Premier League title – the closest the club have been since 2009.
