Liverpool will play Irish side Shamrock Rovers in a post-season friendly in Dublin three days after the final game of the Premier League season.
Liverpool say they will field a first team squad barring any injuries or selection for national team duty for the upcoming World Cup, meaning the likes of Gerrard, Suarez, Sterling, Henderson, Johnson won’t be involved.
The game will be played at 5.30pm on May 14th at the Aviva Stadium. The Reds were in Dublin last summer when they lost 1-0 to Celtic.
Liverpool’s Chief Commercial Officer, Billy Hogan said: “We are looking forward to coming back to Dublin again this year to play in front of our Irish fans. The Club enjoys incredible support in Ireland and we thank the Football Association Ireland for their support in staging the game. Our opponent, Shamrock Rovers, hold a special place for us as we bought Jim Beglin from them in 1983 who became Bob Paisley’s last-ever signing”.
Liverpool FC and the Hoops last met 32 years ago in a friendly at Milltown, Dublin. The final score was 1-1 with Ian Rush scoring for Liverpool.
“I played in the game against Shamrock Rovers over three decades ago and I remember scoring that goal. It’ll be great to play them again and this time take away a win rather than a draw” said Liverpool FC legend and ambassador, Ian Rush.
This will be a fixture not to be missed with Liverpool FC, one of Europe’s most historic and famous football clubs with 18 league titles, meeting Shamrock Rovers, the most successful team in the Republic of Ireland having won 17 league titles.
Shamrock Rovers chairman, Jonathan Roche said: “We are delighted to be taking on Liverpool in this high profile game at the Aviva Stadium. It will see two clubs with strong histories of success and great fans face each other in what should be an entertaining game of football and a great occasion. It will be a great game for our players to be involved in, and also a good day out for our fans and Irish supporters of Liverpool, many of whom are also SSE Airtricity League supporters.”
Tickets go on sale on Friday 28 March at 10am and can be purchased via www.ticketmaster.ie with prices ranging from €15 – €40.
