Former Liverpool boss Roy Evans says Liverpool are the team that nobody wants to play and who deserve to win the title this season.
Evans, who will be back at Anfield as part of the Hillsborough Memorial Match on Easter Monday, was speaking on this week’s 5Times podcast, discussing the title dreams alongside former Reds Jason McAteer and Ian St. John.
“They [Liverpool deserve to win it [the title]” says Evans. “But you don’t get it because you deserve to, you’ve got to keep on working, keep on getting those results right on through to the end.
“But we are the team to watch, the team that nobody wants to play at this moment in time and we’ve got to make sure we keep it that way.”
“Everybody seems to be so upbeat” enthuses McAteer. “Even the girl who comes round to clean my house, she normally does it naked but she’s even walking around in a Liverpool top now and she’s an Evertonian” he jokes.
“There’s a real buzz among the fans” says the former Republic of Ireland international, who askes St. John whether that will help or hinder the players?
“No, it should give them a huge lift,” says the Scot who won two titles in the sixties at Anfield. “At the game on Sunday, when the game ended and the lads went to applaud the fans, the roar that came out The Kop was the best that I’ve heard for a long, long time. It was stunning.
“It was like the great old days, it wasn’t just singing, it was a roar. That was the way it used to be. They [the fans] have got a sense that this could be a big, big year.”
As ever, the podcast is a superb listen as three former players candidly and openly discuss the events surrounding Liverpool FC as they preview this week’s trip to West Ham.
