Luis Suarez
Age: 27
Nation: Uruguay
Uruguay Top Scorer Odds: Evens
Player Of The Tournament Odds: 25/1
Unquestionably the best player in the Premier League this season, Suarez racked up 31 goals in just 33 Premier League games and collected a string of individual honours as a result. He’s also vital to Uruguay, with 11 goals in qualification more than double any other player (Edinson Cavani is next in). Suarez is the shortest odds of any Premier League player to win the Player of the Tournament award but the Uruguayan team is ageing and they may not get far enough to help Suarez win that gong. However, the evens about him top scoring for his nation looks a solid bet -despite injury.
Daniel Sturridge
Age: 24
Nation: England
England Top Scorer Odds: 3/1
Player Of The Tournament Odds: 200/1
Sturridge enjoyed a fantastic Premier League campaign with 21 goals from 29 appearances but his impact this summer may be more limited than some think. Fitness must be a huge concern given he last played 90 minutes for Liverpool in March while he’s only ever completed one competitive England game so it’s not like he’s a proven player at this level. Sturridge is an undoubted talent but Liverpool fans should swerve taking the 3/1 about him being the top Three Lions scorer this summer.
Glen Johnson
Age: 29
Nation: England
England Top Scorer Odds: 100/1
Player Of The Tournament Odds: N/A
Some pundits have criticised Johnson for his defensive work at Liverpool this season but there’s no doubt he’s a handful going forward and is indisputably England’s first choice right-back with Kyle Walker absent from the squad. He was solid for Roy Hodgson at Euro 2012 and is an experienced player having recently reached the 50 cap mark, but just one goal for his country would suggest you should save your money rather than take the 100/1 about him top scoring for the Three Lions!
Age: 33
Nation: Ivory Coast
Ivory Coast Top Scorer Odds: 45/1
Player Of The Tournament Odds: N/A
Toure had a bit-part season at Liverpool, despite racking up 20 Premier League appearances, and struggled at times (his error in the 1-1 draw at West Brom particularly springs to mind). Nevertheless, he is still a defensive regular for Ivory Coast and with 107 caps to his name is part of the overhyped ‘Golden Generation’. He did notch once in qualifying but finding the net in Brazil appears very unlikely.
Jordan Henderson
Age: 23
Nation: England
England Top Scorer Odds: 66/1
Player Of The Tournament Odds: N/A
Enjoyed a superb campaign for Liverpool and would have played in all 38 Premier League matches were it not for his three-match suspension towards the end of the season. Henderson played no part in qualification but was regularly picked for the subsequent friendlies and clearly impressed Roy Hodgson in that time. He’s probably competing to start next to Steven Gerrard in the double pivot with Jack Wilshere and Frank Lampard, but he deserves a crack next to his club captain.
Age: 24
Nation: France
France Top Scorer Odds: 50/1
Player Of The Tournament Odds: N/A
Sakho joined Liverpool for £15million last summer and in time that will prove to be a snip. He was generally solid in his 18 Premier League appearances and he will probably line up alongside Laurent Koscielny in central defence for Les Bleus. Good on the ball, strong and quick, Sakho has the ability to be a huge success for Liverpool – he will be key to keep the back door shut and allow the match-winners such as Karim Benzema and Franck Ribery to shine.
Raheem Sterling
Age: 19
Nation: England
England Top Scorer Odds: 25/1
Player Of The Tournament Odds: 150/1
Sterling burst onto the England scene with a Man of the Match display in the last friendly game before the squad was named. His sparkling performances at the tip of Liverpool’s midfield diamond have made the 19 year-old impossible to ignore and he’s just 11/10 to start the Three Lions’ first game against Italy. However, Roy Hodgson has plenty of reliable operators in wide areas so it’s still likely that his impact will come primarily from the bench.
Sebastian Coates
Age: 23
Nation: Uruguay
Uruguay Top Scorer Odds: 100/1
Player Of The Tournament Odds: N/A
Since winning Best Young Player at the 2011 Copa America, Coates’ career has stalled. The combination of a disappointing move to Liverpool and injury means he has played just 17 league games in three seasons. Diego Godin and Diego Lugano are the first choice centre-back pairing now, though they do sometimes play a back three, and Coates looks to have a battle on his hands to force his way back into the side.
Age: 25
Nation: Belgium
Belgium Top Scorer Odds: N/A
Player Of The Tournament Odds: N/A
Despite Liverpool’s brilliant campaign, there were question marks over goalkeeper Mignolet as the Reds shipped 50 Premier League goals – more than any of the top half bar Tottenham and Stoke. He’s also second choice for the national side as Thibaut Courtois, arguably the world’s best goalkeeper right now, has firmly established himself in the box seat. Don’t expect to see Mignolet play.
Steven Gerrard
Age: 33
Nation: England
England Top Scorer Odds: 12/1
Player Of The Tournament Odds: 100/1
The England skipper sits at the base of Roy Hodgson’s 4-2-3-1 and is instrumental in distributing play, as well as (presumably) being on penalty duty. Some people are sure to be tempted by 12/1 about him top scoring for the Three Lions (particularly after his 13 goal Premier League haul this term), but if you think England will go well than also consider the 16/1 about him winning Sports Personality of the Year.
