Liverpool striker Luis Suarez is to undergo knee surgery on Thursday after suffering an injury in training while with Uruguay ahead of the World Cup.
The 27-year-old has damaged his meniscus, making him a major doubt for the World Cup – although the Uruguayan FA say they remain confident he will be able to participate.
The Times’ Liverpool correspondent Tony Barrett points out how Fernando Torres underwent surgery for the same injury prior to the World Cup in 2010 – and didn’t play his first game back for seven weeks:
A s similar timeframe for Suarez would see him miss the competition.
BBC Sport quote a report in Uruguay suggesting that “Recovery normally takes between 15 and 20 days”.
Uruguay are due to play England in their second group match on June 19th – 27 days from now.
