Raheem Sterling’s homework the key to his success

Raheem Sterling has paid tribute to the talents of his teammates, namely Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez in helping him improve as a footballer.

Sterling’s rise in the second-half of the 2013/14 season to become one of the best-performing and most important players in Liverpool’s first-team has been nothing short of phenomenal.

And at just 19-years-old, Liverpool are looking ahead to many more years of exciting development with the England international.

On collecting his Young Player of the Year award at the club’s end of season awards gala earlier this week, Sterling said his improvement was down to studying the players around him and the spirit in the Reds’ camp.

“It’s been a great season for us and I think everyone has worked really hard as a group,” he is quoted on the club’s official website as saying.

“There’s a real togetherness in the squad and I’m just glad to be a part of this great football club. On a personal level, at the start of the season I wasn’t playing much, but it’s been a real learning curve for me.

“To be able to sit back and learn from the boys, people like Dan and Luis, has been important. To improve my game, I needed to get into the box and score some goals and there are no two better players to learn from than them.”

Sterling has scored nine goals in 32 Premier League appearances this season, and created 48 chances for his teammates, according to Squawka.

He added, “I really tried to learn my game and I want to thank Brendan and all the staff for helping me to get to where I am today.”

Luis Suarez enjoyed a good night at the award ceremony too, scooping the players’ player, supporters’ player and goal of the season awards. For the full list of winners, see here.

Suarez, Sterling and Liverpool are now looking ahead to the final game of the season at home to Newcastle Utd this Sunday. A culmination of a Liverpool win and Manchester City defeat would see the Premier League title return to Merseyside.
