FIFA regulations give the Committee the power to impose a ban of up to 24 matches or two years, but the heaviest punishment it has enforced during a World Cup was an eight-match ban imposed on Italian Mauro Tassotti for breaking the nose of Luis Enrique of Spain during the 1994 World Cup. Any FIFA-imposed ban would apply only to international matches.
