And then there were 8 — Quarter-finals heat World Cup up further

Unknown   at  18:48  No comments

It’s been described by many as the best World Cup ever. Fast, furious football and teams playing with commitment and passion (bar England perhaps).

The second round of matches didn’t disappoint with games going to the wire, stunning strikes and dramatic exits as 16 teams quickly became 8.

As far as Liverpool are concerned, Mamadou Sakho and Simon Mignolet remain Liverpool’s only interest in the tournament, but neither played in their country’s second round matches.

Sakho is nursing a thigh injury, which also makes him a doubt for France’s quarter-final clash against Germany at the Estádio Maracanã in Rio de Janeiro on Friday (5pm BST kick-off).

Nevertheless, it’s all set up to be a thrilling encounter with both teams playing with cohesion and unity throughout their World Cup campaigns so far.

Germany though looked less than convincing in their 2-1 second round defeat of Aleria and we get the feeling the wheels are just becoming a bit loose for Joachim Löw’s side.

The Germans won’t give up without one hell of a fight though and France remain unpredictable under immense pressure.

We’re putting our money on it being a cagey encounter come Friday:

  • Under 2.5 goals at 1.67 /li>

  • Match to be decided by a penalty shoot-out at 6.50

  • Draw at half-time and full-time (90 mins) at 4.75

If France-Germany is going to be a tense affair, we’re predicting the opposite for Brazil v Colombia later on Friday evening (9pm BST kick-off).

Both teams play quite open football and Colombia have been on the attacking march in recent games.

James Rodriguez’s stunning goal silenced Luis Suarez-less Uruguay in the second round, before he hit a second to eliminate them from the competition.

In this highly anticipated meeting of South Americans, we’re going for:

  • Over 3.5 goals at 3.30

  • James Rodriguez (Colombia) first goal at 9.00

  • Colombia to advance to semi-finals at 2.80

We’ll be back later in the week with our preview and betting tips ahead of Argentina v Belgium and Holland v Costa Rica, so stay tuned.

So to recap our tips for Friday’s World Cup quarter-finals:

  • Under 2.5 goals at 1.67 /li>

  • Match to be decided by a penalty shoot-out at 6.50

  • Draw at half-time and full-time (90 mins) at 4.75

  • Over 3.5 goals at 3.30

  • James Rodriguez (Colombia) first goal at 9.00

  • Colombia to advance to semi-finals at 2.80
