Speaking after Liverpool’s 1-0 victory over Olympiakos in the Guinness International Cup at Soldier Field in Chicago, Rodgers was asked about the reported problems with Remy’s medical

“It’s very simple – we’ve made a decision as a club not to go ahead with the deal” explained Rogers. “It’s unfortunate for the player. It’s happened before and it’s happened on this occasion.”

“We’re disappointed for the player but there’s nothing more to be said and we will move on and look at other targets.”

One player the club have signed though is defender Dejan Lovren from Southampton and Rodgers spoke highly of the Croatian.

Rodgers was initially asked whether he intended to use Lovren as the right or left sided centre-back. “We may play a three” he said, with a wry smile on his face.

“Ive said since we lost Jamie Carragher that we needed leadership and Lovren can provide that” said the boss, hinting that Lovren will be a key player for the team this season and in the future.

Rogers said he’d spoke to the Southampton players and they praised Lovren, and had scouted the 25-year-old while at Lyon.

“He’s a player who can still improve” added the boss.

Rodgers also had praise for Daniel Sturridge, saying he had noticed a positive change in him since his return from the World Cup.

“I’ve seen the difference in Dan (Sturridge) since he came back from the World Cup. He’s ready to take on the mantle.”
