New Liverpool player Emre Can will wear Jamie Carragher’s former shirt number at Anfield, 23.
The German midfielder arrived from Bayer Leverkusen for £10 million and begins pre-season training at Melwood alongside all non-World Cup participants on Monday morning.
After completing his transfer last week on Merseyside, Can flew back to Germany to say his goodbyes before moving to Merseyside.
“I am starting an exciting new chapter in my footballing career” he wrote on his official Facebook page. “It’s a dream come true to become a member of the LFC family! This support of the fans, the history and the great team! What a Club!”
Speaking of his new squad number, Can described it as an honour to take Carragher’s former shirt.
“I am going to do everything to win trophies. I thank Brendon [sp] Rodgers for his trust! I will be wearing the number 23, Jamie Carraghers number! What an honour!”
He signed off “Looking forward to meeting my teammates and fans!”
Liverpool’s first pre-season friendly takes place in Copenhagen against FC Brondby a week on Wednesday, before they face Preston the following Saturday – the first opportunity for Reds fans to see Can in action.
