We reported last night that some news sources were claiming a deal had been struck and that Remy will sign a five-year contract with Liverpool early next week.

BBC Sport‘s Mandeep Sanghera explains that the £8.5 million bid has “activated the release clause in the 27-year-old’s contract with the Loftus Road club.”

Remy will become Liverpool’s fifth signing of the summer, following deals for Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana, Emre Can and Lazar Markovic.

Chris Bascombe of The Telegraph wrote today about how Remy might be deployed at Anfield:

Remy will now challenge Daniel Sturridge for the number one striking role on Merseyside, Liverpool eager for the player not to be seen as a like for like replacement for Suarez.

Rodgers is likely to adapt his system this season, no longer tied to the option of playing two strikers as he felt compelled to in order to accommodate the Suarez and Sturridge partnership.

After QPR were relegated at the end of 2012/13, Remy spent last season on-loan at Newcastle United, where he scored 14 league goals for the Magpies.

Earlier this week, Reds boss Brendan Rodgers explained how he was looking to bring in more goalscorers to the club.

Liverpool will hope they can tie up the deal for Remy very shortly so that he can fly out with the rest of the squad to the USA this week for a series of pre-season friendlies.

After a defeat at Brondby in mid-week, and victory over Preston North End on Saturday, the Reds fly to Boston to play their first game of the USA tour against Roma on Wednesday.

Remy, 27, has won 24 caps for France, scoring five times.
