Liverpool’s interest in Manchester City defender Micah Richards has reignited with the Reds set to make a move for the 26-year-old, according to reports on Thursday.

Richards has been linked with a move to Anfield for some time, having found it increasingly difficult to force his way into Man City’s team in recent years.

During 2013-14, the England international made just two league appearances all season for the Sky Blues. Prior to that, he made just seven league appearances in 2012-13.

The Daily Mirror’s James Nursey says Richards is in need of a fresh start and writes:

Now Richards is set to go and Brendan Rodgers wants to take the defender to Anfield in a cut-price deal.

Rodgers is attracted by Richards’ ability to play right-back and centre-back.

With Liverpool’s leaky defence last season letting in 50 goals, and few options in either full-back roles, Richards could well be a useful acquisition for Rodgers.

Richards has just one year left on his current deal at the Etihad Stadium, but City may be reluctant to sell to one of their title rivals.

Born in Birmingham, Richards grew up in Leeds, spending youth spells at Leeds Utd and Oldham, before joining Man City.

He made his first-team debut for City in October 2005 against Arsenal and became the England national team’s youngest ever defender in 2006.
