In what is described as an important step for the club, Liverpool’s plans to expand Anfield Stadium have been approved by the city council.
With planning permission now approved, work could even begin on the expanded Main Stand later this year. The original proposed date for construction work to begin was early 2015.
There will, however, now be a further six-week consultation period, when potential legal challenges to the council’s decision can be submitted, before Liverpool can proceed with work to increase the Main Stand to 21,000 seater stand.
Phase One, the expansion of the Main Stand, will see Anfield’s capacity increase to 54,000.
Phase Two, the eventual redevelopment of the Anfield Road Stand, will see Anfield’s capacity increase to around 58,8000.
Liverpool hope to have the new Main Stand completed in time for the start of the 2016/17 season.
