Liverpool face an anxious wait while they find out the severity of the latest injury striker Daniel Sturridge has suffered while on international duty with England.

The 25-year-old forward suffered a thigh injury in training with Roy Hodgson’s squad on Friday and has been ruled out of England’s Euro 2016 qualifier with Switzerland on Monday. He is expected to miss several Liverpool games.

Sturridge tweeted his disappointment at the latest injury – the fourth he’s suffered with England in the past 15 months.

“Heartbroken soul right now,” he tweeted. “Nothing worse than being injured. Hopefully be back soon fighting fit for LFC.”

Last December, Hodgson admitted he played a less than fully fit Sturridge to “test his resolve”.

An FA spokesman said: “Daniel Sturridge has had a scan and will now return to Liverpool FC for treatment. He will play no part in the forthcoming Switzerland match.”

Initial reports have suggested he faces two to three weeks on the sidelines, but there are suggestions that he has torn his thigh muscle – which would mean longer on the sidelines.

Former England forward Michael Owen is reported to have said “I was there and from my experience and the way Daniel pulled up, I’d be very surprised if it wasn’t a thigh tear.”

Sturridge has missed 21 games for Liverpool due to injury since his move from Chelsea in January last year.

Sturridge’s injury means that Fabio Borini‘s refusal to leave the club during the transfer window could come back to be a huge blessing.

The former Man City and Chelsea forward will almost certainly miss Liverpool’s games against Aston Villa, Ludogarets (Champions League) and West Ham.
