Daniel Sturridge told England staff he should have a day of recovery, but was made to train on the day he picked up his latest injury, according to reports.
The Liverpool striker looks set to miss around three weeks of action and a busy schedule of matches for the Reds after sustaining a thigh injury during England training last week.
Brendan Rodgers explained to press on Thursday that Sturridge, like all players, has a set recovery routine after playing matches.
It has now emerged that the 25-year-old warned England “about an injury risk if his specialised training routine was disrupted”, according to Chris Bascombe of The Telegraph , before being made to play in an 11-aside training match.
Bascombe writes in Friday’s paper:
Sturridge has been ruled out for three weeks because he suffered a thigh strain on international duty. It has emerged the 25-year-old expressed misgivings about participating in an intensive training session on the day he suffered the injury.
Sturridge will miss Liverpool’s Premier League clash against Aston Villa at Anfield this Saturday, and Tuesday’s opening Champions League game against Ludogorets.
He will also be out of the Reds’ trip to West Ham on Saturday, 20th September and the League Cup third round clash at home to Middlesbrough three days later.
Liverpool hope to have their second leading goalscorer from 2013/14 back for the Merseyside derby against Everton at the end of the month.
The row throws open the club vs. country debate with Rodgers admirably holding back his anger during his scheduled press conference on Thursday.
Liverpool have also suffered injuries to Emre Can, who could be sidelined for up to six weeks, and Joe Allen from the international break.
