Liverpool defender Jon Flanagan looks set for a heartbreaking few months out of action after undergoing surgery on a knee injury.
The 21-year-old is yet to play this season after picking up the problem with his left knee during pre-season.
James Pearce of the Liverpool Echo reports on Thursday:
He was scheduled to return to full training this month but with Flanagan still in discomfort the decision was taken for him to go under the knife.
The news will come as a major blow to Flanagan who established himself as a mainstay of the Liverpool first team last season.
His reliable and impressive performances saw him rack up 25 appearances in all competitions in 2013/14 and he is expected to sign a new contract with the club imminently.
Flanagan may face a tougher fight for his place on his return to action with the arrivals of full-backs Alberto Moreno and Javier Manquillo to Anfield this summer and Jose Enrique’s return to full fitness following injury.
The Reds are also without Glen Johnson, Daniel Sturridge, Joe Allen and Emre Can for Saturday’s Premier League clash at West Ham.
