Time up for Glen Johnson at Liverpool?

No sooner has the summer transfer window closed than the papers begin to look towards the January transfer window – and Glen Johnson could be heading for the exit.

Johnson missed The Reds’ win at Tottenham last time out through injury, with Javier Manquillo continuing to impress in his early days at the club.

The 30 year old’s contract expires next summer and talks over a new deal are reportedly on hold, with his current wage of a reported £110k a week being an issue.

Earlier this month Johnson said:

“There are no talks going on with the club at the moment. There were minor talks towards the end of the last season but nothing else.

“I’ve loved playing my football here from day one, but obviously I can only talk to the club about it when they want to speak to me.

In January, I could [talk to other clubs], but I’ll worry about that when January comes.”

His form over the last 18 months is also a rather big issue.

The arrival of Manquillo, plus Alberto Moreno at left-back, means Johnson could find himself surplus to requirements very soon.

The return of Jon Flanagan from injury would mean Brendan Rodgers has two full-backs for either side – Flanno and Manquillo on the right, Moreno and Jose Enrique on the left – even without Johnson.

The Express claim Johnson is wanted by Juventus in January – where he would operate as a wing-back.

Available on a free transfer next summer, Liverpool could well offload the out-of-form Englishman in January, recouping a minimal fee and losing his high wages in the process.
