Following the news of Daniel Sturridge’s new Liverpool contract, Jordan Henderson is set to join the striker as the club reward their top performers.
Brendan Rodgers and FSG look set to continue their work in rewarding Liverpool’s top performers, with the club reportedly ready to offer midfield dynamo Jordan Henderson a new, long-term contract.
The news, courtesy of the Chris Bascombe of The Telegraph , comes after star striker Daniel Sturridge signed a new deal last week.
Elsewhere, with speculation over interest from La Liga giants Real Madrid, teenage forward Raheem Sterling is another Red in line for improved terms.
According to Bascombe, “a contract extension for Henderson is expected to be a formality given the 24-year-old’s progress and desire to stay.”
Henderson has developed into one of Rodgers’ key players, making nine appearances so far this season for Liverpool.
The midfielder was appointed the club’s vice-captain earlier this season, following the departure of Danish centre-back Daniel Agger, and “is sure to be given a deal which keeps him at the club until at least 2019, as with Sturridge last week.”
This, along with Henderson’s contract talks, caps a remarkable turnaround for a player who was once offered the chance to move elsewhere by Rodgers, with a swap deal involving then-Fulham forward Clint Dempsey mooted.
Ed Malyon, of the Daily Mirror , writes that “Henderson’s energy and ability make him the most suited and possibly the most vital player to Liverpool’s new look due to how he dovetails with the club’s attacking options.”
Rodgers is quoted as describing Henderson as “a real stalwart,” and this new contract underlines this value to the Reds.
Bascombe continues to venture that “Philippe Coutinho is likely to be the next in line for an extension alongside Sterling, while manager Brendan Rodgers will want his captain Steven Gerrard as his chief lieutenant for long beyond the current campaign.”
Following in the footsteps of the prolific contract talks of Manchester City this season, tying down his best players could prove crucial business by Rodgers this season.
