Daniel Sturridge: Won't be a top striker until he overcomes his problems, says Rodgers

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has admitted that injuries are preventing Daniel Sturridge from becoming one of the best strikers in Europe.

Sturridge missed nine Premier League games last season through injury and has already missed six matches this season; he is not expected to return until mid-November after thigh and calf problems.

Liverpool have won only two of those six games in his absence and Rodgers admits that a lack of consistent fitness is stalling Sturridge's career.

"He won't become a top European striker until he plays consistently," says Rodgers.

"It doesn't matter about potential. You have to play. When Daniel comes back into the team, you will see the confidence because of the movement and the dynamic.

"But he isn't fit and he hasn't been for a long time. We just have to work without him and, while we are doing that, stay up and around the top end of the table."
