Former Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes has, according to a report on Sunday, rejected Liverpool’s request of a trial to prove his fitness ahead of a proposed free transfer move.

The Spanish shot stopper has been sidelined with an ACL injury since March, with his contract at Barcelona having expired over the summer, making him available to sign for a new club outside of the transfer window.

Liverpool have been linked with the 32-year-old for some time, however, according to The Sunday People, he’s now turned down Brendan Rodgers‘ request to spend four days at Melwood on trial to prove his fitness.

If true and a compromise cannot be found, the failure to land the experienced Spaniard would be a blow to Liverpool and Rodgers, who has been keen to acquire competition for Simon Mignolet.

Earlier reports this month had suggested Rodgers was confident of acquiring Valdes so perhaps a solution can be found.

Reports on Friday had claimed that talks had begun between the two parties, but that they would not be “easy” – something that is seemingly proving true so far.

Are Liverpool right to be cautious with Valdes following his injury, or should they sign him regardless? Let us know your thoughts below.
