Following Steven Gerrard&039;s announcement that he will leave Liverpool for the United States at the end of the season, there seems little point putting what he means to the Kop in words.
Gerrard is everything Liverpool - and always will be.
There is little point ranking the tributes pouring in in his honour, from Robbie Fowler to Jamie Carragher to Kenny Dalglish - or the words of every single Liverpool or even football fan.
But, if there is one that stands out, it&039;s Zinedine Zidane&039;s.
Zidane, a man who won it all and one of the greatest midfielders in history, is as full of praise for Gerrard now as he has ever been.
And, if anyone knows a thing or two about playing in midfield, it&039;s Zizou.
"I have said in the past that, at his peak, he was the best in the world," the France legend is quoted as saying by the Daily Mail.
"I think it was the summer of 2004 I was having a conversation with Florentino [Perez] and I told him I wanted him to partner me in midfield for Madrid.
"I know the club tried twice but he wouldn&039;t leave Liverpool. Not many players turn down Real Madrid but I think that tells you a lot about the loyalty of the man.
"The years of him winning trophies are not behind him. I am sure he will be very successful in the MLS."
