Roma’s coveted midfielder Miralem Pjanic is just one of the many names who have been earmarked as a possible ‘replacement’ for Steven Gerrard since the captain announced his departure earlier this month.
Indeed, Liverpool’s interest in Pjanic, 24, was reported in Italian newspaper Gazetta dello Sport recently.
The Bosnian is a player who has been on Liverpool’s radar for some time now. We revealed last April how Liverpool scouts had watched him and we produced this scout report on him.
And it seems Liverpool’s interest is genuine.
Speaking in an interview with website Bleacher Report, Roma president James Pallotta commented on the Reds’ interest, saying:
“The Liverpool thing with Pjanic is the same. We have another four years with him, and we love him.”
Pallotta was commenting on reports linking Pjanic and fellow midfielder Kevin Strootman with a move across Europe. “I do get annoyed,” he said. “I think the papers have finally given up on the Strootman thing, because Kevin’s come out and addressed it, saying he likes it in Italy and he has a five-year contract. And by the way, I wasn’t going to sell him anyway!”
He did concede, though, that: “If someone comes in with a stupid number for a player, you have to listen to it. You can’t just say no, no matter what.
“[..] If someone offers a huge amount, you at least have to listen to them. You’re running a team, so you have to look at what’s best for everyone, not just one individual. That’s the way the world works.”
Would Pjanic be a good signing for Liverpool? How much might be required to bring him to Anfield?
