Rumours circulating this evening suggest Aston Villa have made a late bid for Rickie Lambert, just hours before the close of the January transfer window.
According to the Daily Telegraph , the Premier League strugglers are set to submit a £5m offer to Liverpool before the 11pm deadline.
Villa manager Paul Lambert reportedly sees his namesake as someone who can bolster his attack for the remainder of the season, as they look to avoid relegation to the Championship.
32-year-old Lambert has endured a nightmare first season to life on Merseyside, despite sealing what looked to be a dream move to his boyhood club last summer.
The former Southampton man has scored just three times in 24 appearances for the Reds, and his all-round quality has simply not been good enough.
With Daniel Sturridge back fit, Raheem Sterling an option up front and Fabio Borini and Mario Balotelli in reserve, Brendan Rodgers may feel he has enough quality in attack to let Lambert move on.
However, The Times Liverpool correspondent Tony Barrett says Liverpool are “showing no signs of wanting the forward to leave.”
