Jamie Carragher feels a top-four place in the Premier League this season may now be beyond his former club Liverpool.

The Reds were beaten 4-1 at Arsenal on Saturday lunchtime and sit five points behind fourth-placed Manchester United, who can extend that gap even further if they beat Aston Villa at Old Trafford.

Liverpool were beaten at home by United in their previous game and Carragher – who made 737 appearances for the Anfield club – believes they may now not qualify for the Champions League, a situation which adds to the pressure on their FA Cup quarter-final replay with Blackburn Rovers on Wednesday.

The former Liverpool defender posted on Kicca: “Top 4 looks like it's gone for Lfc which makes Wednesday at Blackburn even bigger.

“I as a player would take a trophy over CL qualification but that goal looks more difficult with the suspension of Can & Skrtel & the performances of the other defenders today."

Carragher also reckons Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers may have to move away from his preferred 3-5-2 formation for the Blackburn tie as Emre Can will now serve a one-game suspension for his red card at Arsenal.

Can is joined on the missing list by fellow centre-backs Martin Skrtel, who still has two games left of his own ban to serve, and Dejan Lovren, who is out with an abdominal injury, meaning Mamadou Sakho and Kolo Toure are the Reds' only available players for those positions.

“Rodgers may have to change the system to a back 4 as he did for the 2nd half today as defeat at Blackburn doesn't bear thinking about!” Carragher said.
