Steven Gerrard’s late header kept Liverpool’s slim Champions League qualification hopes alive and pushed Queens Park Rangers a step closer to relegation as Brendan Rodgers’ side sealed a 2-1 victory at Anfield.
On a day when a group of Liverpool fans flew a ‘Rogders Out’ banner over Anfield before kick-off, Philipe Coutinho gave the home side the lead in the 19thminute.
However, QPR hit back midway through the second-half thanks to Leroy Fer’s volley before Robert Green saved a Gerrard penalty after Nedum Onuha brought Martin Skrtel down in the penalty area.
Minutes later, Onuoha received his marching order for a second bookable offence and the visitors were made to pay when Gerrard made up for his penalty miss to head home Coutinho’s corner with just three minutes remaining.
Defeat leaves QPR seven points from safety, while Liverpool close the gap to Manchester United, who play West Brom in the Saturday Night Football, to four points to keep the race for qualification to the Champions League alive.
