John Aldridge says £49m is "overpriced" for Raheem Sterling and believes Liverpool will be better off without the forward.
Wantaway Sterling appears to be on the verge of clinching his desired move after Manchester City’s third bid believed to be £49m, according to Sky sources, was accepted by Liverpool.
Former Reds striker Aldridge admitted he was not surprised to see City strike a deal for the 20-year-old.
“No surprise at all, it was only going to be a matter of time,” Aldridge told Sky Sports News HQ.
“It’s best that the club moves on and the player moves on after what has gone on before today. It’s not been nice, it’s not been pleasant from Liverpool football club’s point of view and from a fan’s point of view.
“I'm just glad the saga has been done and dusted to be honest.”
Aldridge has not been impressed by Sterling’s behaviour, although he feels the striker has been badly advised by his agent.
“He’s a young and naïve lad, obviously he listens to an awful lot of what his agent says and does, and he’s got a lot of confidence in his agent.
“It’s been dealt in a really unprofessional manner over the last few months but the agent has got what he wanted.
“Let’s see what happens from Raheem’s point of view but certainly from Liverpool’s point of view it was always going to end like this.
“But Liverpool have got a very, very good offer for Raheem Sterling; £49m is a lot of money for the lad, it’s a lot of money, overpriced in my opinion.”
“QPR will get obviously 20% of that, they will be delighted I’m quite sure and so will Liverpool with the fee.”
Aldridge believes Liverpool already have Sterling’s replacement in the shape of Jordon Ibe.
The former Wycombe winger was sent out on loan to Derby being being recalled in January, and was one of the few players who impressed during a miserable season for the Reds.
“There’s a young player called Jordan Ibe and I’ve watched the progress of both Raheem and Jordan since they were both 15 or 16, and in my humble opinion, Jordon has got as much to give if not more than Raheem.
“Time will tell, but he’s an ideal replacement; he’s going to be a fantastic player both for Liverpool and England in the future.”
