Liverpool midfielder Joe Allen will miss "three or four weeks" with a hamstring injury, but Daniel Sturridge is edging closer to a return.
Allen limped off during last weekend’s friendly against Swindon Town and has joined Sturridge and Jon Flanagan on the treatment table ahead of the opening game of the season at Stoke on Sunday.
Brendan Rodgers said: "He'll probably miss three to four weeks, which is disappointing. He certainly won't be available for the weekend."
There was some positive news on the return to fitness of Strurridge, who could be back in few weeks.
The striker underwent surgery on his hip in the United States in May, and his rehabilitation has gone well.
Rodgers said: "Daniel will hopefully be back towards the beginning of September – he's working very hard."
