Results show that Liverpool supporters would rather Steven Gerrard take up a substitutes’ role against Aston Villa in Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Tuesday, December 9, 2014: Liverpool's captain Steven Gerrard celebrates scoring the equalising goal against FC Basel to level the score 1-1 during the final UEFA Champions League Group B match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Steven Gerrard is set to return to Brendan Rodgers’ Liverpool squad to take on Aston Villa in their FA Cup semi-final clash on Sunday, but should the captain start?

61 percent of Liverpool fans believe that the 34-year-old is better off on the bench.

This comes after Rodgers told reporters on Friday that: “[Gerrard’s] a special player. He still is.

“He’s been, throughout his time here, an incredible player who has, in the main, in the big games, produced big goals and big moments.

“He knows Wembley very well and he’s someone who has got that special quality.

“So whether he plays or doesn’t play, he’ll be a very important member of the squad for us on the day.”

Gerrard has been out of action for the past three games after his red card in Liverpool’s 2-1 loss at home to Manchester United in March, with a midfield of Lucas Leiva, Joe Allen and Jordan Henderson impressing in his absence.

But it can be argued that a player of Gerrard’s experience would be crucial to a Liverpool victory in the FA Cup.

Should the Liverpool captain start against Aston Villa? Have your say below.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers knows his reign will be judged on trophies but even if he reached the FA Cup final he claims it will not be the biggest game of his career.

The Reds face Aston Villa at Wembley on Sunday looking to reach their first final since 2012, when they won the League Cup but lost the FA Cup to Chelsea.

However, Rodgers insists he has already managed in the biggest game of his career so anything else will not faze him.

“Swansea’s play-off final was the biggest game for me and always will be so it is not about pipping it – it would be exactly the same if we were to get to a Champions League final,” said Rodgers of his success with the south Wales club in 2011.

“I’d only been a manager a short time and I will always say it was my biggest game because it is a life-changing game.

“There are more prestigious games in football in terms of trophies but the play-off final, in terms of career and life and where it projects you to, is a big game.

“That game will always be the biggest game in my career but this game will be something different.

“We want to send the supporters home happy after arriving in another final.

“To win a trophy here with Liverpool is something very important. No matter what era you are in you will always be judged on trophies.

“We have made steps and we want to continue that by winning trophies.

“Hopefully, I’ll be judged on my time here – however long that is – on that we’ve worked well and a part of that will be having won trophies.”

Liverpool narrowly missed out on another League Cup final after losing to eventual winners Chelsea in a two-legged semi-final in January.

Rodgers hopes that experience will have helped his players as they look to book their return to Wembley on what will be captain Steven Gerrard‘s birthday and what would be his final appearance for the club before he leaves for the Los Angeles Galaxy in the summer.

“The players performed very well under pressure over the two games, and I think we were very unfortunate not to make the final,” he added.

“What we have learned is that we want to play well and win. We have been fairly good at that but it will be about getting through. We want to concentrate on performance.

“But the learning taken from those two games is that we want to get through so even if we don’t play as well and get through, that’s what’s important in cup competitions.

“You have to seize the moment. It’s not a final, but it’s a semi-final with an opportunity to come back.

“It is games like that where you write your name in the stars as a player, the big games.

“You want to make the big contribution and the big goals. If you want to be renowned as a top player, then you produce in the big games and that’s what the good players will do.

“You can’t take it for granted. You just never know in your life, and professional sport, when the opportunities arise again.

“So when it comes you have got to be ready to take it and that’s something that I know the players are waiting and ready for.”

LONDON, ENGLAND - Tuesday, January 27, 2015: Liverpool's Martin Skrtel looks dejected after losing 1-0 to Chelsea during the Football League Cup Semi-Final 2nd Leg match at Stamford Bridge. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Rodgers will welcome back centre-back Martin Skrtel from a three-match suspension and the Slovakia international will slot straight back into defence, either as a restored three-man back line or the flat four he has employed in the last two games.

“He’s been outstanding this season,” Rodgers said of Skrtel, easily his most consistent defender over the last 18 months.

“Whether we’ve played in a back-four or a back-three. In the last couple of years he’s really come to the fore in terms of the team. It’s great to have him back.

“The first six months when I came in here were difficult for him. He was having to adapt to a new way of working and playing. He didn’t moan, he didn’t complain.

“He sat in the office and looked through his strengths and the areas that he needed to improve on and he took that onto the training field and worked his way back in (the team).

“Since that moment, he’s stayed in the team and been outstanding so he’s a real strong character.

“He’s a great player to have in your dressing room. His performance level this year has been outstanding.”

Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge believes winning the FA Cup would be a great way to reward the club’s supporters.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Sunday, August 17, 2014: Liverpool's Daniel Sturridge in action against Southampton during the Premier League match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Sturridge was speaking to BT Sport as part of its coverage of the FA Cup semi-final, with Liverpool taking on Aston Villa at Wembley on Sunday afternoon.

“Everyone’s excited, everyone’s looking forward to it,” Sturridge said. “We understand the task we have, we understand what we have to do.

“We’re going into it with a confident mentality, and as long as we do that we’ll be able to get the job done.”

The striker spoke about the euphoria felt when winning a major trophy, saying “it’s a great feeling.

“That’s what’s important, when you play the elation’s always there. When it’s something you love and something you wanted to do since you were a child, to get so close and not to achieve is heart-breaking.

“So when you win it it’s the best feeling.

“Watching games as a kid in my living room in Birmingham, it’s a big occasion for everyone. Going back to seven or eight years old. The Ryan Giggs goal against Arsenal. Michael Owen scoring in the final [versus Arsenal].

“Games like that I always remember.”

Football - FA Premier League - Liverpool FC v Southampton FC

The 25-year-old pointed towards the progress Liverpool would make with success in the FA Cup, despite a somewhat muted 2014/15 season.

“We’ve not had a great season but we’re in a position now where we can finish in the top four and win the FA Cup. And if you had asked people at the start of the season if you can guarantee Champions League football and win some silverware they would have probably been happy.

“But at the same time with the season we had last season we came so close to winning the league we set the bar very high and sometimes it’s difficult to keep it replicating that.

“But that’s what we’re working towards, being a team that can challenge every single season for silverware and for the title.”

Most importantly, Sturridge lauded Liverpool’s fans, and their role in the club’s continued success.

“[The city] is intense on football. The fans know their football. And they are great, unbelievable fans. They’re used to seeing great football on the pitch, they’re used to winning trophies.

“We’re still improving and shouldering the responsibilities of playing for Liverpool. I understand it and I understood it when I came to the club.

“Everyone’s learning and as time goes on we’ll hopefully be able to see us winning trophies.”

Jamie Carragher: Accuses John Terry of tactical voting

Jamie Carragher: Accuses John Terry of tactical voting

Jamie Carragher has accused Chelsea captain John Terry of "tactical voting" in regards to the PFA Player of the Year award.

Terry recently revealed his pick for the award - for which he cannot vote nominated team-mates Eden Hazard and Diego Costa - as Liverpool midfielder Philippe Coutinho.

With Hazard the current favourite to take the PFA crown won by Luis Suarez last season, former Reds defender Carragher believes Terry's vote is more to increase the Belgian's chances of winning rather than Coutinho's.

In his Daily Mail column, Carragher wrote: "I'm sure Hazard and the other leading contenders - in my mind David de Gea and Harry Kane - will benefit from their team-mates being careful with who they vote for.

"John Terry recently revealed he had chosen Liverpool midfielder Philippe Coutinho - who has been very good but not great - as his nomination.

"There's no way Terry can seriously believe Coutinho has been better than De Gea and Kane this season! There is more to it than meets the eye.

"John, I am almost certain, will have gone around Chelsea's dressing room when the ballot papers came in and told the squad - given that you cannot choose one of your team-mates - under no circumstances should they vote for De Gea or Kane, who are Hazard's biggest challengers.

"I'm sure the same happened in the Spurs and United dressing rooms."

Carragher went on to reveal that he had used the same "tactical voting" to benefit former team-mate Steven Gerrard, who won the award in 2006.

"I did exactly the same thing in 2006 when Steven Gerrard won! I was Liverpool’s PFA representative back then and I made it clear that, for Stevie to win, nobody should vote for Thierry Henry or Frank Lampard!

"You might think that’s unfair but it is the same in every dressing room."

Reunion The Big Four ?

KickOff

1. Arsenal

2. Chelsea

3. Liverpool

4. Manchester United

.......Sebagai the Big Four.

Liverpool Hilang !

Liverpool gagal menembusi top 4 sejak 2010 sehinggalah aksi mengejut musim lepas menjadi naik juara. Namun dikala Liverpool &039;menunaikan tanggungjawab&039; untuk reunion Big Four, Manchester United pula pergi menjejak member lama di tingkat 7. Ingatkan member masih ada kat situ.

NewBigFour

City sebagai new Big Four. Ini kerana dominasi 4 penjuru ini tak sehebat 4 penjuru yg lama dahulu. Mendominasi Liga sejak 92 sehinggalah 2009.

KemuncakDominasi Big Four

SirAlexFerguson : "Ia Tak Boring, Ia sedang berkembang pesat."

"Saya sangat suka jika kita mengalahkan mereka (LFC ,Arsenal, Chelsea)" kata-kata tegas Sir Alex Ferguson.

Reunion The Big Four ?

KickOff

1. Arsenal

2. Chelsea

3. Liverpool

4. Manchester United

.......Sebagai the Big Four.

Liverpool Hilang !

Liverpool gagal menembusi top 4 sejak 2010 sehinggalah aksi mengejut musim lepas menjadi naik juara. Namun dikala Liverpool &039;menunaikan tanggungjawab&039; untuk reunion Big Four, Manchester United pula pergi menjejak member lama di tingkat 7. Ingatkan member masih ada kat situ.

NewBigFour

City sebagai new Big Four. Ini kerana dominasi 4 penjuru ini tak sehebat 4 penjuru yg lama dahulu. Mendominasi Liga sejak 92 sehinggalah 2009.

KemuncakDominasi Big Four

Philippe Coutinho says it was simply inevitable he would sign a new contract with Liverpool and is aiming to finish the season on a high.

BOLTON, ENGLAND - Wednesday, February 4, 2015: Liverpool's Philippe Coutinho Correia celebrates scoring the winning second goal in injury time against Bolton Wanderers during the FA Cup 4th Round Replay match at the Reebok Stadium. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

The 22-year-old put pen to paper on a new five-year deal in February, but the club have struggled to tie up deals for Raheem Sterling, Jordan Henderson and Jon Flanagan since.

Now Coutinho, who was this week nominated for both the PFA Player of the Year and the Young Player of the Year awards, says there was never any other outcome in terms of where his future lay.

“Liverpool have always shown a great warmth to me so when they came to me with a proposal I did not need to think twice to renew the contract,” he is quoted by The Telegraph as saying.

“I have always been looked after very well by this football club and I am very happy at this football club, so I didn’t even have to think about it.”

Coutinho has been in sensational form of late, scoring the winner against Blackburn Rovers in the quarter-finals to earn Liverpool an FA Cup semi-final tie against Aston Villa at Wembley this Sunday.

“When you see the manager trusts you and gives you a lot of confidence it makes you play even better,” he continued. “It makes your football flow better than usual. Trust and confidence from above is always good for a player.

“I like the responsibility I have here and I love the way the fans treat me, the way the staff look after me. On the pitch I try not to think too much about things, just to perform as best as I can in order for the rewards to be shared amongst us.”

Now Coutinho, who earned much praise for his role as a ‘false 9′ in Monday’s 2-0 victory over Newcastle Utd in the Premier League at Anfield, is looking to end 2014/15 on a positive note.

He added, “I’d rather not talk about myself in terms of stepping up levels and things like that because my personal preference is to do my work during the week and then show my best in the game. Sometimes the game does not go for you no matter how much you try, but I do what I can and I leave other people to their opinions on how I played.

“Fortunately the Champions League is not out of reach yet mathematically, anyway, there are still possibilities, even though it is not 100 per cent in our hands. But we’re in the semi finals of a great competition and will do our best to win the trophy – it matters a lot to us as a club.”

Aston Villa vs Liverpool gets underway at 3pm on Sunday, 19th April and is live on BT Sport 1 in the UK.

"Liverpool vs Aston Villa: Saya berharap Raheem Sterling tidak &039;ketawa di penghujung (last laugh) &039;selepas semis Piala FA." -Tim Sherwood

Sherwood Dan Sterling

"Dia tidak membuat sebarang petunjuk kepada saya bahawa dia mahu bermain di tempat lain.&039;

"Dia menikmati saat saat beliau di sini dan saya rasa semua orang dapat melihatnya. Beliau adalah pemain utama.&039;

TentangRelegationBattle

In addition to passing comment on recent off-the-field incidents involving Jordon Ibe and Raheem Sterling, as well as racial abuse aimed at Mario Balotelli and Daniel Sturridge on social media, Rodgers spoke of his eagerness to become a trophy-winning Liverpool manager.

“It’s a very long list of managers here that have been very successful in different eras and different times,” he said.

“Hopefully, I’ll be judged on my time here – however long that is – on that we’ve worked well and a part of that will be having won trophies.

“It’s one game at a time and we have to get over a very difficult game against Aston Villa before we can even think of that.

“The players are in good form and a good moment now. We’ll look forward to the game.”

Brendan Rodgers has been tight-lipped over whether Steven Gerrard will play in Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final against Aston Villa at Wembley, but said the Liverpool captain will bring a “special quality” to the matchday squad either way.

Gerrard returns to the Reds squad after serving a three-match ban for his red card against Manchester United in the Premier League last month.

The 34-year-old is synonymous with big matches for the club, but it is unclear whether he will participate this weekend.

Speaking at his press conference to preview the clash at Melwood on Friday afternoon, Rodgers said of Gerrard: “He’s definitely ready. We played a behind-closed-doors game here on Monday, which he and a few of the other players that have been out played in.

“Steven’s fine. The most important thing is his availability. He’s a special footballer, Steven, and Wembley is somewhere he knows very well. So whether he plays or doesn’t play, he’ll be a very important member of the squad for us on the day.

“He’s a special player. He still is. He’s been, throughout his time here, an incredible player who has, in the main, in the big games, produced big goals and big moments.

“He always produces a great contribution to the team. So the most important thing was having him back. But he knows Wembley very well and he’s someone who has got that special quality.”

Brendan Rodgers has played down the latest incidents involving Raheem Sterling and Jordon Ibe

Brendan Rodgers has played down the latest incidents involving Raheem Sterling and Jordon Ibe

Brendan Rodgers called for a sense of perspective after a week when Liverpool duo Raheem Sterling and Jordon Ibe made the newspapers for their alleged off-field activities.

Sterling made the front and back pages of the newspapers this week after footage appeared of him apparently inhaling nitrous oxide along with images of the 20-year-old with a shisha pipe.

The striker then made the headlines on Monday for the all right reasons after he scored the opening goal in the 2-0 win over Newcastle.

However, Sterling was back in the papers again on Wednesday along with 19-year-old Ibe and a shisha pipe in pictures which were reportedly taken in September.

Nitrous oxide, which is also known as ‘hippy crack’, and shisha pipes are not illegal, but Rodgers confirmed he has talked with the pair regarding their off-field behaviour.

"I spoke to both players and they are fully aware of what has happened – and then we talked about football," Rodgers said.

"I think both young players are aware of their responsibilities. All you can do is continually educate them. It is (about) perspective as well. If you look at Raheem he didn't do anything illegal.

"It was something he will look back on in years to come and it probably wasn't the wisest thing to do.

"But for me it is all about the welfare of the two young players; making them aware of the health issues which come with that and also about the professionalism and what they are representing.

"They will make mistakes, whether it is those two or other young players.

"In the main young footballers are good people, they do a lot of things which go unnoticed. Sometimes they get caught out but that is just youth and learning.

"We talk of players as being role models but I think the best role models in your life are parents and guardians – but we are not perfect either, we make mistakes.

"We learn and if we have to do that when we are older in life then certainly young players will do that and they need support in that."

Sterling will start Liverpool's FA Cup semi-final against Aston Villa on Sunday but Ibe is cup-tied having previously played in the competition while on loan at Derby.

Defender Martin Skrtel will return after a three-match suspension but there is greater debate over whether captain Steven Gerrard, also returning from a ban but with just 27 minutes of football behind him since February 10 because of injury, should start at Wembley.

The 34-year-old was given a run-out in a practice match earlier this week and Rodgers confirmed the midfielder, whose last match for the club before he leaves for Los Angeles Galaxy could potentially be the FA Cup final on May 30, is fit.

"He is definitely ready. We played a behind-closed-doors game here on Monday in which he and a few of the other players who have been out played in," added the Reds boss.

"Steven is fine. The most important thing is his availability. He is a special footballer and Wembley is somewhere he knows very well.

"Whether he plays or doesn't play he will be an important member of the squad for us on the day.

"Throughout his time he has been an incredible player who, in the main, has always produced big goals and big moments in the big games."

Striker Daniel Sturridge is a major doubt with a hip injury which forced him to miss Monday's win over Newcastle.

"We will give Dan every possibility to be fit and we will see how he is tomorrow and take it from there.”

Rodgers also admitted he was shocked by research which revealed Mario Balotelli is the most abused player on social media.

The survey by anti-discrimination body Kick It Out found that the Italy international had received over 4,000 posts containing racist abuse while team-mate Sturridge was sent around 1,600.

“I was aware of the findings and obviously the study, I was shocked to be honest when I saw that,” added Rodgers. “I think one (abusive) message is one message too many to be honest.

“I think it is something that we support all the relevant organisations that are working to stamp all of this type of thing out.”

The Reds travel to Wembley for the first time under Brendan Rodgers this weekend for the much anticipated FA Cup semi-final tie against Aston Villa. Ben Twelves takes a look at the all-important team selection options ahead of the match.

A second trip to Wembley and final clash against Arsenal or Championship side Reading awaits the Reds should they overcome Tim Sherwood’s revitalised Villa. Having endured a far from straightforward journey to reach this late stage of the competition, it’s essential Rodgers’ men keep focussed to ensure of a return to ‘Anfield South’ in over a months’ time.

Rodgers’ side must take confidence from successive wins and clean sheets in the last two matches.

Villa, meanwhile, have eased their fears of relegation in recent weeks but head into Sunday’s fixture in the middle of an untimely injury crisis which could see them take to the Wembley pitch with somewhat of a makeshift team.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Thursday, New Year's Day, January 1, 2015: Liverpool's captain Steven Gerrard in action against Leicester City during the Premier League match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

It promises to be a huge occasion for Liverpool with a place in the showpiece final within touching distance, and Rodgers is faced with some tough and interesting decisions to make over which 11 players will be trusted to take to the pristine Wembley surface and complete the task ahead.

The Team

The Reds will be without their best central defender, Mamadou Sakho, with the Frenchman set for a month on the side-lines and Adam Lallana is also set to miss the match due to an on-going groin problem, while Jordon Ibe is frustratingly cup-tied having featured for loan club Derby back in round three.

Daniel Sturridge is once again in a race against time to be fit as he battles to shake-off a hip injury, but Rodgers is boosted by the return of suspended duo Martin Skrtel and captain Steven Gerrard, who the Liverpool boss has a dilemma over as to whether he picks the 34-year-old to lead the side out at Wembley for what could be the last time in his illustrious Anfield career.

Rodgers: “Gerrard is definitely ready. The most important thing is his availability. He’s a special footballer.”

Mario Balotelli has recovered from a combination of injury and illness to be in contention to feature on Sunday – something that could happen should Sturridge fail in his attempts to recover in time and with a place in a potential front three up for grabs – though Lazar Markovic and strikers Fabio Borini and Rickie Lambert who both scored in the 2-0 win at Villa Park in January, will all be equally as hopeful of claiming a start.

A concerning defensive display against the Geordies last time out could tempt Rodgers into altering his back four where forgotten men Javier Manquillo and Jon Flanagan will be hopeful of dislodging Glen Johnson at right back, the way Skrtel could do to Dejan Lovren who struggled again on Monday night at the heart of the Liverpool back line.

The Liverpool XI

Rodgers will again have to choose between sticking with a four man defence and deploying a 4-3-3 system, or reverting to a back three and the 3-4-2-1 formation that transformed the season and helped progress the Reds to this stage.

The squad available to the Reds manager is better balanced to be able to operate with a three man defence unlike on Monday night, but following the so far successful formation switch to a back four, the Northern Irishman could deploy it for the third match running.

Rodgers: “It’s great to have Martin Skrtel back available. He looks fit and strong. He’s very well liked and respected at the club.”

If he does keep faith with 4-3-3, Skrtel should regain his shirt at centre back, but with Johnson turning in a woeful display on Monday and Manquillo and Flanagan both well short of match practice, Emre Can should move to right back where he can burst forward to join attacking play, allowing the Slovakian to play alongside and guide Lovren.

It’s hard to see where Gerrard fits in within this system as an energetic midfield and attack is needed, and while Sturridge is set to be afforded maximum opportunity to recover, his availability remains unlikely meaning Sterling could lead the line switching positions with Philippe Coutinho, with Markovic taking the space vacated by Ibe.

Two changes to the starting XI from Monday could see the Reds line up like this at Wembley in the 4-3-3 formation:

Wembley XI 4-3-3

Switching back to 3-4-2-1 is a viable option for the Liverpool manager, and he may well choose to do so.

The return of Skrtel allows Rodgers to pick Can and Lovren either side of the 30-year-old, and with Markovic ready to come in, the young Serbian could resume his role at right wing-back – relegating Johnson to the bench – outside of a Henderson-Lucas midfield pairing.

In that shape, there would be a place available for Gerrard to start in the front three where the inspirational 34-year-old could join the Brazilian magician in playing behind Sterling, who should lead the attack in Sturridge’s likely absence.

Those alterations of formation and selection could see Liverpool line up looking like this come 3pm kick-off time:

Wembley XI 3-4-2-1

Rodgers: “At Liverpool you are always judged on trophies. It’s something we want to do for the incredible supporters we have here.”

Having progressed the hard way, the Reds must now produce a dominant performance in front of the 32,000 strong travelling Reds and capitalise on a chance for a shot at silverware that could provide a platform for more success for a developing team in the not so distant future.
