Jendela perpindahan bakal dibuka!!!

Jika diperhatikan, bahagian side-back dilihat antara bahagian yang perlu diberi perhatian selain back-up jentera tengah, terutama Attacking-Midfielder.

Diharap perpindahan ini memberi hasil yang bagus utk mencapai objektif, layak ke UCL 2014/15 :D

With exactly half of the 2013/2014 season complete, now is as good a time as any to assess Liverpool’s performance so far this campaign and answer some important questions. Oliver Smith provides his mid-season review.

LONDON, ENGLAND - Sunday, December 15, 2013: Liverpool's manager Brendan Rodgers during the Premiership match against Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

How would you rate the season so far?

If you’d told me this time last season, when Liverpool sat in tenth place 21 points behind League leaders Manchester United, that the Reds would top the table on Christmas Day in 2013 and end the year a mere six points off first place, I would have laughed heartily and dismissed you as a deluded optimist.

That shows how much progress the Reds have made in the space of a single year.

Having laid the groundwork for his football philosophy, Rodgers’ style of play is paying substantial dividends in the form of goals galore and points on the board. Teams now travel to Anfield afraid, while Kopites turn up expecting to enjoy watching Liverpool dominate opponents and win matches relatively comfortably. While Anfield is becoming a fortress once again, Liverpool remain impressive on their travels as well, with 19 goals on the road making them the third most prolific away side in the League.

Admittedly, the Merseysiders’ defence has been vulnerable at times this season and has frequently frustratingly conceded needless goals, which has meant Mignolet has only kept five clean sheets in the League, but apart from that it is difficult to fault Liverpool’s displays so far this season, especially when you compare them with those of previous campaigns.

9/10

Who is your player of the season so far?

The transformation of Luis Suarez is almost as unbelievably remarkable as the transformation of Liverpool.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Wednesday, December 4, 2013: Liverpool's Luis Suarez celebrates scoring the first goal against Norwich City during the Premiership match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

In four months the Uruguayan has gone from hated traitor to adored hero. No longer arguing over the clauses in his contract in an attempt to manoeuvre a move away from Anfield, Suarez has now put pen to paper on a new long-term contract and is scoring at a rate that justifies his status as the highest paid player in Liverpool’s history. With 19 goals in just 14 League appearances, surely there is no better footballer in the world right now than Liverpool’s number seven.

Apart from Luis Suarez, Jordan Henderson has performed tremendously well so far and has cemented a regular place in the starting line up with solid, reliable and increasingly creative performances from midfield. His blossoming understanding with Luis Suarez is also extremely encouraging and will hopefully develop further in 2014.

Which player has disappointed you most this season?

Glen Johnson has been inconsistent so far. The England right back has always been liable to criticism for defensive laxity, however this season he has regularly looked more vulnerable and, for all his purported attacking ability, he has managed to provide only one assist.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Sunday, May 19, 2013: Liverpool's Glen Johnson during the final Premiership match of the 2012/13 season against Queens Park Rangers at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Picking up an ankle injury against Manchester United early on in the campaign certainly impacted on his form, while a lack of competition for his right back position has perhaps made the 30-year old complacent.

Considering his age and high wage, Johnson’s form must pick up in the second half of the season to earn an extension to his contract, which expires in 2015. Rodgers may also want to sign another right back in January to demonstrate to Johnson that he isn’t guaranteed a place in the team.

What has been the best performance so far this season?

Liverpool’s best performance was undoubtedly their annihilation of Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane. Beating Spurs 5-0 was the perfect way to end a streak of six defeats at the Reds’ bogey ground and was so good that Andre Villas-Boas was sacked the morning after the humiliating defeat.

LONDON, ENGLAND - Sunday, December 15, 2013: Liverpool's Jon Flanagan celebrates scoring the third goal against Tottenham Hotspur during the Premiership match at White Hart Lane. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Dominant from start to finish, two strikes from Suarez, one for Henderson and encouraging goals for youngsters Flanagan and Sterling secured a memorable victory for the Merseysiders and sent a clear message out to the rest of the Premier League; Liverpool mean business.

What has been the worst performance so far this season?

The 3-1 defeat away to Steve Bruce’s Hull City was embarrassing. Lacklustre and lifeless, Liverpool never really got going and were deservedly beaten by the Tigers. Apart from Steven Gerrard’s goal from a first half free kick, the only positive to take from the match was the passion Kolo Toure showed when the Ivorian beat the ground repeatedly in frustration after David Meyler gave the home side the lead with 20 minutes remaining.

HULL, ENGLAND - Sunday, December 1, 2013: Hull City's Tom Huddlestone celebrates scoring the third goal against Liverpool during the Premiership match at the KC Stadium. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Let’s hope Liverpool get some payback against the Tigers at Anfield on New Years’ Day.

What position will Liverpool finish the season in?

On Christmas Day, when Liverpool sat top of the table, a title challenge seemed a realistic prospect. On New Year’s Eve, following two remarkably similar defeats to Manchester City and Chelsea, most Kopites have re-evaluated their expectations and would be content with a top four finish.

Although I’ve always thought it unlikely that the Reds would jump from seventh to first in one season, I wouldn’t rule out a title tilt just yet. With so many teams congested at the top of the table- nine points separate eighth placed Newcastle from table toppers Arsenal- anything could happen and, if reinforcements are brought in in the transfer window, the injury list shortens and Liverpool enjoy their customary upturn in form during the second half of the season, winning the title isn’t beyond the bounds of possibility, as it usually is by this stage.

Ultimately, a first placed finish is probably a season away for the Reds. However, I do expect them to qualify for the Champions League, and perhaps even manage a third placed finish.

Aaron Cutler has some scathing criticism for Howard Webb following Liverpool’s defeat at Stamford Bridge.

LONDON, ENGLAND - Sunday, December 29, 2013: Referee Howard Webb during the Premiership match between Chelsea and Liverpool at Stamford Bridge. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Not for the first time, a spirited Liverpool display was undermined by one Howard Melton Webb.

Yes, the self-styled ‘best ref in the country’ denied The Reds an unlikely point at Stamford Bridge following a catalogue of mishaps. So bad were his errors in judgement, so glaring his blatant incompetence it bordered on the comical – only the joke was on us.

He may not have shown it – for fear of further reprimands – but inwardly Brendan Rodgers must have fumed.

Consecutive away performances have been undone by poor officialdom falling short of Sunday League standard. City may have been bad luck but Chelsea was simply bad refereeing. A crime sheet stretching back the best part of a decade has left Kopites questioning Webb’s integrity.

Is it sheer ineptitude, a lack of bottle or a personal vendetta against Liverpool Football Club? Cynics will label us conspirators with a chip on our shoulders but let’s review just some of Howard’s horrors:

West Ham (A) April 26, 2006:

In a dress rehearsal for the following month’s FA Cup Final Liverpool and West Ham played-out a largely uneventful fixture at Upton Park. A Djibril Cisse double had given the visitors a 2-1 lead when, with just two minutes remaining, Howard Webb became card happy.

A somewhat innocuous tussle between Hayden Mullins and Luis Garcia resulted in both being dismissed and dealt unnecessary suspensions for the showpiece event in Cardiff.

The Spaniard won possession in midfield, only to be upended by a Mullins arm lock. Fighting to break free, Garcia spun round and caught his opponent in the back. Nothing sinister, merely a breakaway motion having been grabbed for almost ten seconds. Both fell to floor in pantomime fashion – the entire episode cringe-worthy.

Rather than award Liverpool a rightful free-kick and instruct both players to man-up Webb craved attention and headlines. He sent off both players to the dismay of teammates, fans and managers alike. Both clubs joined forces in a bid to remove or delay the bans but our beloved FA stood firm.

And so Webb cost two professionals a cup final appearance, all due to his inability to manage a childish fracas.

Man United vs. Tottenham (Old Trafford) April 25, 2009:

This encounter did not actually feature Liverpool but it impinged on the club and ultimately the destination of a Premier League title. Would-be champions Manchester United were wobbling badly, suffering from the aftershocks of a 4-1 home defeat to Rafa Benitez’s reds. That setback had been followed by defeat to Fulham and a nail-biting win at home to Villa. So when Spurs stormed into a 2-0 lead at Old Trafford the alarm bells were ringing, particularly with Liverpool recording five victories on the bounce.

The gap was narrowing and Howard simply had to intervene. Twelve minutes into the second half he seized his chance. Michael Carrick darted into the box only to be met by the onrushing Heurelho Gomes, who clearly took ball before player. To the exasperation of everyone watching across the country, Webb pointed for a penalty – enraging Tottenham.

Gifted a route back into a game they had all but lost, Ronaldo finished Webb’s assist and turned the title race on its head.

Shell-shocked, Harry Redknapp’s side capitulated, shipping another four goals to lose 5-2. The score line flattered the hosts, who looked dead and buried until a helping hand from the man in black.

Webb later apologised for his calamitous decision but his intervention had had the desired effect. United went on to win the league.

Arsenal (A) February 10, 2010:

Liverpool travelled to The Emirates playing catch-up on their title rivals following a dismal first half of the season. Morale boosting victories over Spurs and Everton had at least set-up a tilt for the top four until Howard Webb OBE thought better of it. Abou Diaby gave the Gunners a second half lead but Liverpool continued to press and were worth a point. They should have earned just that in the final seconds of added time.

Steven Gerrard lined-up a 25 yard free-kick, bracing himself for another Roy of the Rovers moment. His subsequent strike was goal bound until Cesc Fabregas raised both arms and blocked the shot – inside the area. A more blatant penalty you will never see.

As Liverpool raged Webb shrugged off their appeals and blew the final whistle. Did the timing of the incident cause him to bottle a big decision?

Andre Mariner was brave enough to award an even later penalty our way (102 minutes) at The Emirates a year later. As it was Liverpool lost the game and Webb, typically, was never held to account.

Gerrard himself condemned the former police constable in his post-match interview. “The referee told the Liverpool wall in the first half that if anyone raises their arms above their waist he was going to give a penalty” he said. “So for some crazy reason he didn’t give it. He told me after the game he hadn’t seen it.”

Man United (A) March 21, 2010:

Just over a month later Webb was entangled in yet further controversy involving Liverpool. The reds, by now harbouring only faint hopes of Champions League qualification, took the lead at the home of their great rivals courtesy of a Fernando Torres header. They were pegged back just seven minutes later when Webb awarded his favourite team a questionable penalty.

Javier Mascherano fouled Antonio Valenica, of that there is no doubt. The Argentine grappled away with the United winger over the course of ten yards but gave up the fight BEFORE he reached the area. That failed to discourage Valencia who launched himself like an Olympic long-jumper, landing comfortably inside the box.

Rather than consult his linesman Webb pointed straight for a penalty – the only surprise being he merely booked Mascherano. Predictably, Alex Ferguson claimed he got the decision spot on, while Rafa Benitez protested in vain. Now on level terms, United were able to press home the advantage of twelve men and wrap-up a 2-1 victory.

Man United (A) January 9, 2011:

A return to Old Trafford in Kenny Dalglish’s first game back at the helm. The King had not sampled competitive football in twelve long years and Howard Webb wasted no time in introducing himself and his bias. Less than sixty seconds were on the clock when he articulated his favourite Old Trafford gesture, pointing for a penalty at The East Stand.

On this occasion Daniel Agger was the framed party, his ever so slight contact with Dimitar Berbatov no way strong enough to knock the Bulgarian to the turf. Webb though needed no encouragement, setting-up the opportunity for Ryan Giggs to drill home from twelve yards.

Rotherham’s answer to Grant Mitchell was not done yet, training his sights on the once critical Gerrard. Just before half time the England captain lunged into a tackle with Michael Carrick. Despite taking off the reds midfielder was in no way over the top, simply mistiming his block tackle slightly. A yellow would have sufficed. Of course Webb, despite having his back turned to the initial incident, leapt at the chance to dismiss our talisman.

Never one for consistency, Howard failed to even book Rafael for a strikingly similar incident with Raul Meireles seconds before.

A bewildered Dalglish said afterwards “The penalty is a joke. I’ve seen the replay and unless the rules have changed it is no penalty. The other one I cannot see as a red card either. In the dressing room before the game someone said to me the game’s not changed much. I said ‘I thought it was a non-contact sport.’ Maybe I was right”

Tottenham (H) May 15, 2011:

This game had little significance but Howard Webb still took it upon himself to blight an end of season dead rubber. Rafael Van Der Vaart gave Spurs a first half lead with a smart finish at The Kop End. The Dutchman celebrated his effort by running straight to the famous grandstand and goading the home support. It may have been harsh but inciting crowd trouble surely warrants a booking, by the letter of the law anyway. Webb let it pass – he would, wouldn’t he?

In the second half he recreated one of his own finest moments, awarding a penalty AGAINST Liverpool for a coming-together OUTSIDE the box. This time Jon Flanagan was adjudged to have felled Steven Pienaar. In actual fact they challenged shoulder to shoulder and both fell to the ground. Though initial contact came outside of the area, the South American bundled into the box and gave Webb the perfect excuse. Modric converted from the spot and Spurs had their first league win at Anfield in 18 years.

Chelsea (A) December 29, 2013:

Finally to yesterday’s car crash of a performance. Fresh from perceived injustice at The Etihad Liverpool travelled to Stamford Bridge expecting one of the toughest games of their season. One look at who would oversee the fixture could only have added to such trepidation. It took Webb just two minutes to make his first rickett – failing to even book Samuel Eto’o for a potentially leg-breaking challenge on Jordan Henderson. Raking his studs down the Liverpool midfielder’s shin, the Cameroonian escaped any punishment, setting a trend for the afternoon. In the second half Webb truly outdid himself.

Firstly he waved away penalty appeals when John Terry clambered atop of Luis Suarez from a Liverpool set-piece. As if to rub to salt in the wounds he then rejected further protests having watched, without obstruction, Eto’o sieve Suarez to the ground in an off the ball incident.

Incompetence personified he had the nerve to point to the pair and smirk. To cap-off a match-winning display he then allowed Oscar to stay on the field having jumped two footed into a tackle with Lucas. Somehow you think the outcome may have been different if roles were reversed.

So there you have it. Webb’s crime-sheet. An edited version of a long list of bad calls involving Liverpool. Opposition fans may ridicule us for playing the victim but this man’s decision making has cost us time and again.

He is The FA’s go-to guy, as he was Alex Ferguson’s. He will continue to be awarded the biggest Premier League clashes where his stern gaze, muscular frame and sheer arrogance will kid commentators and suits alike into believing he is Pierluigi Collina MK II. That could not be further from the truth.

He may not be bed-buddies with United’s top brass but he certainly has an axe to grind where Liverpool are concerned.

The club need to raise the Webb issue with the Football Association, if only to stop him tarnishing decisive games. One bad call can cost sides titles, Champions League’s spots or top flight survival. Webb makes more of those calls than most.

Lastly, it remains one of the modern games great mystery’s that such a repeat-offender can be held in such high esteem. Webb may look the part but it is time he was exposed as a criminally poor referee.

Howard Webb… Again

Last January, Liverpool completed the signing of forward Daniel Sturridge within 48 hours of the transfer window opening and they look like doing similarly this year too.

The player who looks set to become the early arrival is Egyptian playmaker Mohamad Salah.

The 21-year-old will arrive from Swiss side FC Basel for around £8 million, according to several reports.

Brendan Rodgers attended their Champions League tie with at Schalke earlier this month and Liverpool’s interest has been reported by The Mirror previously.

Mirror football reporter David Anderson tweeted on Monday afternoon to say the deal is “progressing well”.

Liverpool could have done with Salah at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, against who he impressed in the Champions League earlier this season.

Salah is a pacy player with an eye for goal, having scored 17 goals in 26 appearances for his country.

He has been likened to Franck Ribery, and could fit into the Liverpool side in an interchanging, fluid front-three alongside Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge.

Steven Gerrard today returned to full training at Melwood, while Daniel Sturridge also stepped up his recovery.

Gerrard took part in training alongside those players who did not feature in Sunday’s match at Chelsea, while Sturridge worked with rehabilitation fitness coach Jordan Milsom.

On Gerrard, Brendan Rodgers explained at his pre-Hull press-conference, “Steven has joined back in training, so we’ll see how he is for Hull, and I would think that probably by the Stoke game [January 12] we’ll have a number of the others who’ll not be too far away.”

There is bad news for Rodgers with Joe Allen facing at least two weeks on the sidelines with an adductor strain, but Jordan Henderson should be fit for the New Year’s Day clash.

Mamadou Sakho‘s hamstring strain is yet to be confirmed but he faces up to six weeks out.

“Joe will probably be a few weeks with an abductor strain,” Rodgers explained. “Sakho, we’re just waiting for confirmation on his hamstring strain. Glen Johnson came off [at Chelsea], but that was tactical and wasn’t injury enforced.”

With the January transfer window fast approaching, Brendan Rodgers and his transfer committee will surely have assessed every angle available to them to add to Liverpool’s squad.

An ever-advancing aspect of the transfer window now is the utilising of the loan market.

In recent years, Rodgers has proved to be an exponent of the loan system, with the manager adding Nuri ?ahin, Victor Moses, and Aly Cissokho to his squad on a short-term basis.

But are Liverpool using the loan market in the right way?

Enhancing the First-team Squad

With the addition of ?ahin last season, and current loanees Moses and Cissokho, Brendan Rodgers has clearly brought in these players to make an immediate impact on the first team.

In this respect, Liverpool’s use of the loan market represents two different angles.

Firstly, with ?ahin, the loan market offered Rodgers an opportunity to sign an exceptional talent on a short-term basis where the club would not usually be in a position to sign the player.

Secondly, with the latter pair, there is a case of a try-before-you-buy nature to these loans. It is perfectly acceptable to suggest that if Cissokho and Moses were to impress the manager sufficiently, a permanent move could be engineered.

With all three however, the players haven’t made the impact that perhaps was expected. In both angles this can be attributed to differing focusses on loyalty.

?ahin was arguably deployed in an unnatural position by Rodgers and the Turkish international struggled, as ?ahin testified after his move was terminated in January:

“I did not fail at Liverpool. Brendan Rodgers wanted me to play as a number 10. But I do not play behind the strikers.”

This may suggest that Rodgers may have felt a lesser obligation to appease ?ahin.

Conversely, particularly seen within the lethargic performances of Moses throughout the season, a lack of loyalty towards a loanee’s current club can be theorised.

This doesn’t conclude that short-term additions to a first-team cannot work sufficiently however, as with the inspired signings of Romelu Lukaku, Gareth Barry, and Gerard Deulofeu at Everton can attest to.

However, there must be a reason that loan signings are generally not favoured by the ‘bigger’ clubs.

The most significant loan signings of recent years at ‘big’ clubs have been Manchester City’s temporary move for David Pizarro and Arsenal’s desperation bid for Yossi Benayoun.

Neither loan manifested themselves into a permanent move for the player.

This could be surmised as a ‘bigger’ club not favouring bringing in loan signings for the first team due to the lack of long-term stability and there being no guarantee of commitment from the player.

Therefore, it could be suggested that loan signings should only be a last resort for a manager planning for the long-term.

Trimming the Wage Bill

Another way in which Brendan Rodgers has utilised the loan market is to trim down the wage bill.

Since taking over, Rodgers has been tasked to cut down a monstrous wage bill.

The decision to loan fan-favourite Pepe Reina to Napoli for the 2013/14 season was controversial. With Reina making some costly errors throughout the previous season, Simon Mignolet was signed in 2013, initially deemed as competition for the Spaniard.

MANCHESTER, ENGLAND - Sunday, February 21, 2010: Liverpool's goalkeeper Pepe Reina during the Premiership match at the City of Manchester Stadium. (Photo by: David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

On reflection, this move has been a success. Reina was in no way a benchwarmer, and the goalkeeper seemingly had designs on a move to Barcelona. Mignolet’s solid performances in goal have cemented this even further.

Loaning want-away, or unwanted, players is an effective means to cover wages and also gives the player a route out of the club – few suspect Reina to make a triumphant return in 2014.

However, with summer loans Oussama Assaidi (Stoke) and Fabio Borini (Sunderland) proving to be more effective options than Moses so far in the Premier League this season, this can be seen as an easy option.

Furthermore, with Liverpool left wanting during Sunday’s 2-1 loss at Chelsea, Rodgers had minimal attacking options on the bench with Moses unable to feature against his parent club.

It is arguable that Rodgers may have fared better with keeping one of the pair rather than loaning in Moses, again showing the instability of signing loan players for a first-team position.

Experience for Youth

The loan market can of course also provide valuable experience for youth players.

Liverpool’s young stars have been making the most of the loan market this season. With the lower leagues benefiting from cost-effective short-term deals which allows them a higher calibre of player than perhaps they are generally afforded.

Against Chelsea, Rodgers was forced to turn to youngsters Jordan Rossiter and Brad Smith to fill his bench, and upon his introduction Smith seemed affected by the occasion.

Meanwhile, fellow academy players Andre Wisdom and Suso have impressed at their respective loan clubs. In turn for their contribution, these young players are gaining first-team experience in competitive leagues away from constant scrutiny.

ST HELENS, ENGLAND - Monday, October 7, 2013: Liverpool's Joao Carlos Teixeira celebrates scoring the fifth goal against Tottenham Hotspur during the Under 21 FA Premier League match at Langtree Park. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

However, Joao-Carlos Teixeira’s ineffective loan spell at Brentford this season is proof that the loan club needs to suit the signing.

This may suggest that a feeder club may be the way forward, as evidenced by Chelsea’s successful partnership with Vitesse Arnhem.

A feeder club would allow Liverpool to send its players out on loan to gain experience both playing in a competitive league and, more importantly, together.

An Overhaul on the Cards?

Overall, the loan market definitely has its pros and cons.

Whilst it provides experience for younger players and often bears financial benefits for the club, the outcomes, in player performance or their future at the club, are hit and miss.

With the recent shake-up within the academy, this is perhaps something that could be overhauled. Partnerships could be formed, loans more considerably measured to suit the individual.

It is a successful system, but perhaps as evidenced by the ineffective Moses and Cissokho, is one that should work as a one-way street.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has backed Luis Suarez after the striker was accused of diving by Jose Mourinho.

Suarez was accused of making an 'acrobatic swimming pool jump' by the Chelsea manager, but Rodgers has stood by his star forward, while insisting he is an easy target.

Suarez was challenged by Samuel Eto'o during the second-half of the 2-1 defeat at Stamford Bridge, but referee Howard Webb was unmoved by his claims for a penalty.

"Anyone watching the game would say it was not a dive," Rodgers told Sky Sports News. "Luis is an easy target isn't he?

"We had a spell over the last year when everyone was jumping on his back, saying he was diving. So he must be the only one that is doing it?

"I think it was a valid claim for penalty against a player who wasn't making an attempt to play the ball.

"It certainly was not an acrobatic dive. Everyone can see the decision making and I don't want to go into it too much. The games are gone, we will not gain anything from them now."

Liverpool were top of the table at Christmas but have now slipped to fifth following the 2-1 defeats at Manchester City and Chelsea.

But Rodgers had nothing but praise for his players' efforts as he looks to strengthen in the January window.

"I am full of pride for the players and what they have produced in the last two games," he added.

"The Manchester City performance was outstanding. Everyone makes mistakes, the officials make mistakes and unfortunately we have got punished for it.

"We went into the Chelsea game with a small squad against one of the biggest squads in Europe.

"We've had the game in the balance right to the very end and there were certainly decisons that could have went for us on another day.

"Obviously the recruitment team are busy putting things together in terms of the profile of players we need here to improve the team and the squad.

"The owners have invested millions upon millions into the team; every window we arrive in looking to improve it where we can. This window will be no different."

Brendan Rodgers‘ already thin squad suffered two further injuries in the defeat at Chelsea on Sunday, Joe Allen coming off with half an hour remaining and Mamadou Sakho picking up a hamstring injury late on.

Brendan Rodgers unhappy with Sakho/Eto’o half-time shirt swap

Already missing captain Steven Gerrard – who isn’t due to return to full training until this week, Allen’s injury in particular leaves Liverpool short in midfield.

Add in a potential injury to Jordan Henderson (the Physio Room website claims he too picked up a muscle injury at Chelsea) and Rodgers is left with only Lucas Leiva and Luis Alberto as his injury-free central midfielders.

Alberto, a £7m arrival from Barcelona in the summer, remained on the bench against Chelsea despite Allen’s injury – with Rodgers instead bringing on 19 year-old Brad Smith for his debut on the left of midfield and moving Philippe Coutinho to a more central position.

Gerrard could well be back in the squad ahead of schedule for the New Year’s Day visit of Hull to Anfield, but to rush him back into the starting XI would be a risky move.

Centre midfield was already an area which many Liverpool supporters felt needs strengthening and these injuries have exposed that weakness within the squad.

Rodgers has been using a midfield three of Lucas, Henderson and Allen in recent games, to good effect in Gerrard’s absence.

He could decide to temporarily revert to the 3-4-3 formation for the Hull match due to his limited options in centre midfield. That would mean Kolo Toure, Martin Skrtel and Daniel Agger making up the back three, given Mamadou Sakho’s injury.

Glen Johnson and most likely Aly Cissokho would be the wing-backs, with Lucas and Luis Alberto as the central midfielders.

Philippe Coutinho could then play in the central area behind a front two of Luis Suarez and Raheem Sterling.

How Liverpool could line-up against Hull if Allen and Henderson are both ruled out:

teamvhull

Rodgers could throw a huge surprise though instead and hand 16 year-old Jordan Rossiter his debut in midfield – the youngster was on the bench at Chelsea on Sunday.

Brendan Rodgers reacted in a jovial, but unimpressed mood to being told that Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho swapped shirts with Chelsea’s Samuel Eto’o at half-time in Sunday’s 2-1 defeat at Stamford Bridge.

French international Sakho and Eto’o swapped shirts, as did Philippe Coutinho and Oscar, when the Reds were trailing 2-1 to the home side at the break.

An early goal from Martin Skrtel to give Liverpool the lead had been turned around with goals from Eden Hazard and Eto’o.

Rodgers seemed unaware that two of his players had swapped shirts with their rivals whilst walking off the pitch at half-time, and was surprised when a journalist told him of the incident in his post-match press conference.

Surprised, Rodgers told the reporter, “Well one, I didn’t know that, and two, thanks for telling me because I don’t like that.”

Rodgers then confirmed it is something he will raise with Sakho, before being told that Coutinho also swapped shirts half-way through the game.

The idea to swap shirts so early appeared to show a lack of focus on the game that Sakho and Coutinho had to play for a further 45 minutes, and premature respect to Liverpool’s rivals.

It also prompted a bemused and angry response on Twitter:

Should players be swapping shirts at half-time? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below, or on Twitter @thisisanfield

Liverpool lead the Premier League table on Christmas Day, but go into 2014 sitting in fifth place after defeats at Manchester City and Chelsea.

Martin Skrtel gave the visitors a third minute lead, but goals from Eden Hazard and Samuel Eto’o turned things around for the Blues before half-time.

Despite two consecutive defeats, manager Brendan Rodgers remained upbeat about his side’s title chances, telling BBC Sport, “There’s no reason why we can’t be challenging. The most important thing for us is that we’re in the conversation.”

Reds fans have taken to Twitter to discuss the side’s performance at Stamford Bridge yesterday, and some questionable decisions by referee Howard Webb.
