Reports in Spain claim Pedro is a target for Chelsea

Reports in Spain claim Pedro is a target for Chelsea

Pedro claims that Barcelona have received offers for him amid reports in Spain that he is poised to join Premier League champions Chelsea.

The 27-year-old lost his place in the Barca starting line-up following the arrival of Luis Suarez last summer with the Spanish champions having agreed to reduce the size of his buyout clause.

According to reports in Spain, Chelsea are keen to sign the forward, who only last month penned a new four-year contract, and are prepared to pay the new buyout fee of 30million euros after it was reduced from 150million.

Barcelona coach Luis Enrique used Pedro mainly as a substitute last term and he came on in the Champions League final to set up Neymar to score the third goal in a 3-1 victory over Juventus.

Pedro, who has been linked to Arsenal and Liverpool, has been quoted as saying he was in "a difficult situation" but added that he had not spoken to Chelsea coach Jose Mourinho and was looking forward to starting pre-season training with his Barca team-mates on Wednesday.

"It's true, we agreed to reduce the value of the buyout clause and it's true there are offers," he said.

"I don't want to think about the future, I want to rest, remain calm, start pre-season on Wednesday with the squad and we will see what happens after that."

Raheem Sterling will be a hit with the Manchester City fans, according to Shaun Goater

Raheem Sterling will be a hit with the Manchester City fans, according to Shaun Goater

Former Manchester City striker Shaun Goater has backed Raheem Sterling to be a hit at the Etihad Stadium ahead of the Liverpool winger's proposed £49m move.

The 20-year-old England international is expected to join up with his new team-mates on their pre-season tour of Australia once he has completed a medical and been unveiled as a City player.

And Goater, who played for City between 1998 and 2003, told Sky Sports News HQ that Sterling is exactly the type of player City need.

"I'm very excited about it because not only is he a promising player, he's dynamic," he said. "He gets the ball with pace, he's able to go past two or three players.

"The one thing I'd like to see is him produce a few more goals. He's not been prolific from that point of view and when you send £49m you'd expect a good return of goals.

"The exciting thing is where he will fit in. We know he can play on the right side and will offer a lot of competition for Jesus Navas, but he can play on the left side and he can also play in the hole.

"So it brings much competition. I think he may end up on the left. We're excited because of the type of player he is. He gives real pace and with David Silva being able to slip him in I think he'll be a good fit for City.

"He is dynamic, he will get bums off seats. He's is electrifying. He will have his challenges in the Liverpool games, I'm sure they will give him a bit of stick, but I am certain he will produce the goods.

"I think he can produce 12 to 15 goals in City's team. He'll produce better because he's playing with better players."

Brendan Rodgers: No issue with Raheem Sterling

Brendan Rodgers: No issue with Raheem Sterling

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has denied that there has been any fall-out with Raheem Sterling, who is on the verge of completing his move to Manchester City.

The transfer of the 20-year-old England winger is still subject to contract negotiations and a medical but the two clubs have agreed a fee which Sky sources understand is £49m.

Sterling had asked to leave Anfield and was the subject of two bids from City in June, which were rejected. The player was reported to have said that the breakdown of his relationship with his manager was one of the reasons for wanting to leave.

Rodgers said: "The situation currently is simple. The club has agreed with another club a deal for Raheem to be transferred. Subject to a medical, that will go through.

"Contrary to the last week or so, in terms of what was written, Raheem and I have always remained very strong in our relationship, and have been up until he left. There is no issue there."

Rodgers has already been busy in the transfer market, and new boys James Milner, Danny Ings, Nathaniel Clyne, Joe Gomez and Adam Bogdan are all with the squad on the tour.

Roberto Firmino is still on holiday following the Copa America but Rodgers is delighted to have secured the services of the Brazil international from  Wolfsburg.

Rodgers said: "He's a top class player. He's played in Europe, so he understands it.

"There's no pressure. He'll come in to the PL, and it will take time to adapt. But he has all the traits and the profile that we would want. He works hard, has talent and can score goals. We're really excited.

"It was important to improve and build the squad for the season. We're very pleased with the players we've brought in.

"The key for us is the overall team. Individuals like Raheem will have benefited from the team. We aim to be much stronger and more competitive than we were last season, and we're relying on everyone.

"The focus has been really good, the start has been strong. Hopefully we can remain that way over pre-season and take that confidence into the new season."

Liverpool missed out on Champions League football with a sixth-place finish last season but Rodgers refused to be drawn on what his target is for the season.

He said: "At this moment in time, our objective is to get as fit as we possibly can. And then next season, the target is to be the best that we can possibly be."

Liverpool will be playing the first match of their Far East tour against the Thai All Stars for the True Super Trophy on Tuesday night.

After Thailand, they will travel to Brisbane and then on to Adelaide; Brendan Rodgers' side will stop in Kuala Lumpur to face a Malaysia XI on their return to the UK.

Their final match before the start of the pre-season will be in Helsinki.

Gonzalo Higuain: Saleable asset for Napoli

Gonzalo Higuain: Saleable asset for Napoli

Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis is desperate to sell Gonzalo Higuain and has said "I wish" another club would buy the striker.

The 27-year-old Argentina frontman has a 90million euros (£64million) release clause in his Napoli contract though and De Laurentiis will not allow him to leave for anything less.

The exuberant De Laurentiis told fans at a training camp in Dimaro over the weekend "I wish" another club would buy Higuain, saying: "I’d buy eight players."

Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United have been linked with Higuain and the Gunners have reportedly had a bid rejected earlier in the summer for the former Real Madrid man.

However, the Serie A club are adamant they will not sell Higuain unless his buy-out is met.

The club said in a statement last week: "The club stresses that the Argentine has an existing contract clause of £67million.

"No bids below that figure will be accepted, those who want the player will have to match that valuation."

Two former Liverpool defenders believe the club have achieved an excellent price for Raheem Sterling, although Phil Thompson and Jamie Carragher both agree that the young England winger cannot yet be described as a great player.

After months of wrangling, Sky sources understand Manchester City have agreed a fee of around £49m for the 20-year-old who made it clear early last season that he wanted to leave Anfield.

Speaking to kicca.com, Sky Sports pundit Carragher said: “Raheem is a very good young player but he has not yet hit the heights of an Owen, Rooney, Fowler or Giggs at this stage of his career.

“So there's no doubt £49m is a great deal for Liverpool. It’s a great fee and credit to the owners who have shown great strength.

“It sends a message to other clubs and current players. Surely in the future they will want to halt the exodus of Liverpool’s top players moving on.

“The price is not something Raheem can control and the debate will rage about whether he's worth it or not but the price is more to do with nationality and potential.

“But if he can take City to more titles and get close to Champions League success they'll deem it worth it.”

And Thompson says the club have done well to secure this price but adds that the deal was not handled well by the player or his agent.

The former England central defender told Sky Sports News HQ: “Liverpool have handled it well. They have a good price for him.

“Manchester City started out at £25m, which was laughable, but the club have done it right. Got the right money.

“Liverpool have done most things rights with the deal but you can’t say the same thing about Raheem or his agent (Aidy Ward).

“City are paying for potential. Raheem’s had 13 or 14 assists in the three years and has scored something like 18 league goals.

“You need a little bit more than that. His finishing on the left side needs to be improved. Brendan Rodgers and his staff have done well in nurturing this young lad.

“His agent hasn’t nurtured him in the same way the club has. Just hasn’t been handled very well.

“He’s certainly a good player but he’s not a great player and that’s why you won’t find too many Liverpool fans shedding any tears for him.

“Last season wasn’t a great season for him. The one before that he did well with Suarez. But last year we were looking for a lot from him but he didn’t deliver.”

And regarding Sterling’s future, Thompson went on: “I just hope City, after seeing what has happened, make certain he follows their rules and discipline because I fear for Manchester City in the years ahead.

“I am hoping City get the best out of him. But they have got massive talent in the squad so will he play every week?”

Thompson also accepts that his beloved Reds are now struggling to hold on to their better players.

He said: “Liverpool have become a bit of a selling club now – you can’t get away from that.

“Luis Suarez is world class but Sterling is nowhere near Suarez’s capabilities but he’s still a very good player.

“But I hope we are still a big draw and it was nice to see Nathanial Clyne and James Milner sign and Milner did have options to go elsewhere but he chose Liverpool and I’m pleased with the signings.”

Sky sources: Manchester City have had a £49m offer accepted for Raheem Sterling

Sky sources: Manchester City have had a £49m offer accepted for Raheem Sterling

John Aldridge says £49m is "overpriced" for Raheem Sterling and believes Liverpool will be better off without the forward.

Wantaway Sterling appears to be on the verge of clinching his desired move after Manchester City’s third bid believed to be £49m, according to Sky sources, was accepted by Liverpool.

Former Reds striker Aldridge admitted he was not surprised to see City strike a deal for the 20-year-old.

“No surprise at all, it was only going to be a matter of time,” Aldridge told Sky Sports News HQ.

“It’s best that the club moves on and the player moves on after what has gone on before today. It’s not been nice, it’s not been pleasant from Liverpool football club’s point of view and from a fan’s point of view.

“I'm just glad the saga has been done and dusted to be honest.”

Aldridge has not been impressed by Sterling’s behaviour, although he feels the striker has been badly advised by his agent.

“He’s a young and naïve lad, obviously he listens to an awful lot of what his agent says and does, and he’s got a lot of confidence in his agent.

“It’s been dealt in a really unprofessional manner over the last few months but the agent has got what he wanted.

“Let’s see what happens from Raheem’s point of view but certainly from Liverpool’s point of view it was always going to end like this.

“But Liverpool have got a very, very good offer for Raheem Sterling; £49m is a lot of money for the lad, it’s a lot of money, overpriced in my opinion.”

“QPR will get obviously 20% of that, they will be delighted I’m quite sure and so will Liverpool with the fee.”

Aldridge believes Liverpool already have Sterling’s replacement in the shape of Jordon Ibe.

The former Wycombe winger was sent out on loan to Derby being being recalled in January, and was one of the few players who impressed during a miserable season for the Reds.

“There’s a young player called Jordan Ibe and I’ve watched the progress of both Raheem and Jordan since they were both 15 or 16, and in my humble opinion, Jordon has got as much to give if not more than Raheem.

“Time will tell, but he’s an ideal replacement; he’s going to be a fantastic player both for Liverpool and England in the future.”

Raheem Sterling: Looks set to leave Anfield for The Etihad

Raheem Sterling: Looks set to leave Anfield for The Etihad

Manchester City have agreed a £49million transfer fee for Liverpool striker Raheem Sterling, according to reports.

City appear to have finally got their man after Brendan Rodgers’ side reluctantly accepted a bid for the England international.

The wantaway forward was left out of Liverpool's squad which flew out on Sunday for their pre-season tour of Thailand, as talks over the big-money switch progressed.

Sterling twice failed to report for pre-season training earlier this week, blaming illness, and had reportedly asked Rodgers if he could be left out of the tour.

However, the 20-year-old, who has been at loggerheads with Liverpool since turning down a new contract earlier this year, now appears set to complete his move to the Etihad Stadium.

City had reportedly already failed with two bids for the forward, with the second believed to be around £40m, with Liverpool understood to be holding out for nearer £50m.

Assuming Sterling agree terms with City and passes a medical, his protracted and acrimonious departure from Anfield will finally be sealed.

Sterling has been at loggerheads with the Reds since February, when manager Brendan Rodgers claimed he had been offered "an incredible deal".

Two months later Sterling angered the club by confirming, in an unsanctioned interview, that he had turned the contract down.

The impasse deepened when Sterling's agent, Aidy Ward, claimed the player would not sign even for "£900,000 a week".

He became embroiled in fresh controversy after photographs emerged of him appearing to puff on a shisha pipe, and then allegedly inhaling laughing gas.

His actions have prompted criticism from a host of former Liverpool stars with Steven Gerrard the latest to speak out, the  former Anfield skipper revealing he is" not happy with all that carry-on".

Sterling joined Liverpool from QPR's academy in 2010 and has made 129 appearances for the club, scoring 23 goals.

He made his senior England debut in 2012 and has scored one goal in 16 appearances.
