After an empty January transfer window for Liverpool, Max Munton questions whether we know enough to make accurate judgements on the club’s transfer policy.

Liverpool’s inability to pull off a signing in the January transfer window has been met with some very stern questions from fans.

Having lost out to Chelsea in the pursuit of Mohamed Salah last week, transfer deadline day turned into a rather rumour-fuelled chaotic day, with the Reds failing to complete a deal with Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk for Yevhen Konoplyanka.

Cue a tirade of abuse on social media aimed towards the club’s managing director, Ian Ayre, who had been in Ukraine trying to find an agreement with Dnipro.

But with little information being leaked out of Ukraine, and the few bits that were relayed by English journalists being, ultimately, speculation, is it right to blame Ayre?

Some suggest Liverpool struggled to see through the signing of Konoplyanka with Dnipro due to being unable to agree a payment schedule. Others cite the fee as stumbling block. Then there’s the other complications — economic rights, image rights, and the theory that Dnipro’s owner had a late change of heart.

Of course, these are all suggestions. Pure speculation, and most of the time guesswork. You could piece together the bits of information messrs Ben Smith, Tony Barrett and Neil Jones fed, but that’s not set in stone either.

Matt Ladson, writing for the Bleacher Report, suggests Liverpool may wish to consider upping the ante to seal the deal in transfer negotiations:

If you have a business, and in order to grow that business you would benefit from a new piece of technology, you may have to pay a little more than you wish to get that required technology.

However, it would be fair to argue that Liverpool have been caught out from overspending before, with Stewart Downing, Andy Carroll and Charlie Adam just a few of the more recent nightmares.

Readjusting your budget or value for player mid-negotiations is dangerous and borders on gambling.

Furthermore, in terms of a perception of a club’s transfer policy, a club which refuses to budge on their valuation of a player will not be taken for a ride, though the consequence may mean missing out on the player.

Nevertheless, the increasing line of failed bids for players — Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Willian, Diego Costa, Salah and now Konoplyanka — does suggest there is an issue with Liverpool’s transfer policy.

Whether that problem starts at the transfer committee’s choice of targets, or a misguidance on Liverpool’s valuation of a player compared to his current club’s, we don’t know. Do we need to know?

Dave Usher’s take on Konoplyaka-gate and the empty January transfer window is to look at the immediate impact on the team, in quite a refreshing article for ESPN. He writes:

The decision to not strengthen in midfield and at full-back is far more likely to hurt the Reds, especially if they lose any more players to injury. The one straw for Kopites to clutch at is that the deployment of Coutinho in that more withdrawn role could be like having a new signing. Let’s face it, that’s the closest thing Liverpool have to one after another disappointing transfer window.

If there are no players available to improve the first team though, what can be done?

Questions will inevitably be asked by fans, although speaking into the abyss of social media is neither helpful, nor productive either. But do fans have another mouthpiece? Probably not.

It also begs the question, does the club need to explain it’s transfer policy to fans, or not? To what degree is the club accountable to the fans?

The club’s interest is to put positive spin on any issues surrounding potential confrontation by fans. A win against West Brom on Sunday would be the best medicine for Liverpool Football Club right now.

Brendan Rodgers says he is happy with the players he’s got after Liverpool failed to make any signings in the January transfer window.

STOKE-ON-TRENT, ENGLAND - Sunday, January 12, 2014: Liverpool's manager Brendan Rodgers against Stoke City during the Premiership match at the Britannia Stadium. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Despite bids to sign both Egyptian winger Mohamed Salah, and Ukrainian international Yevhen Konoplyanka, the Reds made no new additions as the transfer deadline passed at 11pm on Friday night.

But Rodgers, who is preparing his team for this Sunday’s Premier League clash at West Brom, says the lack of transfer activity makes no difference to his confidence in his team to have a successful end to the season.

“If you look at the position that we’re in with 15 games to go, we have shown consistently that we have the squad to compete,” he told the club’s official website.

“The benefit of the second half of the season is that there is still a lot of development left in a lot of our players.

“We have a lot of young players playing in the team who are growing and improving all the time.

“Them gaining experience and playing games, with the consistency of the team, adds up for a really exciting last 15 games for us.”

Rodgers also accepted the harsh reality of a tough January transfer window, with clubs relunctant to sell their best players for fear it will disrupt their campaign mid-flow.

He added, “I think it’s difficult in order to bring certain players in that are going to help us immediately.

The availability of the player, and of course the affordability, are always the two factors involved in getting a player in.

It certainly hasn’t been because of a lack of work by the football club. There are lots of people who have worked tirelessly to identify and find the right types of players.

A lot of those players haven’t been able to become available for us. Of course, as a manager, you would like to have strengthened – but I’m very optimistic with the group of players I still have available here.

“If we can keep those players fit, and maximise the availability for the rest of the season, we can have a great chance to have a really good finish.”

West Brom vs Liverpool gets underway at 1.30pm on Sunday, 2nd February 2014. It’s live on Sky Sports 1 in the UK.

Do you feel the same emotion as you read the Malay version of it?

Author&x2019;s Notes

What&x2019;s so special about this book? Why Ulu Yam? What does it have to do with Liverpool? Surely some of you are wondering how the idea of writing this book came about? Is it great? Are the readers enticed to read from page one until the very end?

If I was asked these questions, my earnest answer would be, &x201c;I don&x2019;t know.&x201d; What I am sure of, however, is that this story comes from the heart. It may not be an epic tale of those who have successfully enraptured the world with various innovations. Neither is it the story of a great intellectual who discovered a formula that grasped the attention of scholars everywhere.

This is my story.

The story of an average village boy from Ulu Yam. The child of a policeman &x2013; a mere &x2018;kampung&x2019; boy with larger-than-life ambitions and a smaller-than-life background. A child who was keen on challenging his own ability. One whose ability to play football was practically nonexistent; whose love for the sport exceeded the capability of his stocky physicality. A boy whose friends ridiculed him for this inability; he would never qualify for a team, even if it was only for a small neighbourhood game.

A village boy who was always laughed at for trying to speak English in his childhood years, when he attended school in Ulu Yam Bharu. People often called him &x201c;mat salih celup (a westerner wannabe),&x201d; and he was often accused of forgetting his roots.

Ever since he was young, he&x2019;d adjourn to his friends&x2019; houses, simply to watch football on a black-and-white screen. This boy was one whose mouth gaped open as he watched a steady sea of people holding &x2018;Liverpool FC&x2019; scarves up high, and whose sense of excitement swelled as he heard the chorus of &x2018;You&x2019;ll Never Walk Alone&x2019; rattling the Anfield Stadium, displaying what could only be described as unity.

He dreamed of setting foot there one day. To step into Liverpool &x2013; a place he regarded as a whole new world altogether &x2013; and to capture pictures and memories alongside the &x2018;Shankly and Paisley Gate.&x2019; To pay his tributes towards the 96 lives lost as a result of the Hillsborough tragedy.

His teenage years were also rendered with various stories to share, because he wasn&x2019;t exactly one of the smartest students. He just barely qualified for a place in university, with grades that scraped by, and though his mind wasn&x2019;t as bright as he would like it to be, his personality made up for that. With this beaming, cheerful personality he would retrace his steps and gradually pick up shards of confidence he&x2019;d left behind. Pick up his resolve to reach for the ambition of going to Liverpool and to Anfield.

His childhood dream was achieved at the age of 35. Excitement and pure euphoria surged through his veins as he set foot on Anfield&x2019;s sacred ground for the first time in his life, singing the YNWA song in the Kop stand along with people whose feelings towards the club were akin to his. The words and melody of the song escaped his lips effortlessly; he&x2019;d heard it enough times that it was already registered in his mind.

That was when the realisation dawned upon him: he wanted to share this feeling with others from his home country. He wanted people who wished to visit Liverpool, to be able to experience the feeling of joy that encompassed him during his first visit.

So he decided. He kept a silent resolve that he&x2019;d do it. He&x2019;d help these people materialise their dreams.

He became acquainted with so many people, more than he&x2019;d ever expected, who shared his childhood dream of setting foot in Anfield. He adopted the mission and vision that the supporters of the supreme Liverpool FC were not only united in the football arena, but as supporters of one of the greatest football teams in the world, they were also able to assist the less fortunate without regard for religion, social status, and race. He adopted the principle that satisfaction in life comes from giving and sharing and contributing towards the community. He fortified a brotherhood without prejudice and always commended team spirit.

They aimed to unite other football supporters to the same mission and vision. This is the essence of this book. These are our stories &x2013; your story along with mine.

A story that&x2019;s often told but never written down, as I&x2019;ve always felt that it isn&x2019;t amazing enough to share. Perhaps this is what we need to realise: that stories from the heart are ones that reside close to the soul &x2013; because this is our story. Because we all need motivation and inspiration so that we don&x2019;t feel lonely.

The story of a determined Malaysian KOPITE, and every chapter is lined with casual motivation. Every chapter is threaded by the course of the trail through which we tread on to share this dream, because our dreams are still the same, aren&x2019;t they? Only we are able to understand this feeling! SuperScouse Malaysia. The feeling and understanding that we&x2019;re never alone. You&x2019;ll Never Walk Alone!

Yours sincerely,

Nazali Noor

Tahukah anda?

Selepas sebulan masa diberikan untuk menandatangani player, pihak pengurusan Liverpool hanya mampu membawa masuk seorang pemain iaitu Dunkin Donuts. Admin tak tau la dia ni boleh main midfielder defensif or left back. Same2 kita nantika kemunculannya.

Haha okay admin geram sebenarnye Liverpool tak beli player. Keep Faith and You Never Walk Alone :)

Liverpool have failed to sign Ukrainian winger Yevhen Konoplyanka, and with it have not made a January signing.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Friday, November 26, 2010: Liverpool supporters take photographs of Glen Johnson on their Blackberry mobile phones during a signing session for supporters at the Liverpool FC Club Shop at Anfield. (Photo by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

In scenes reminiscent to that of the summer transfer window of 2012 when a move for Clint Dempsey went to the wire and failed to materialise, news broke shortly after 11pm that Liverpool’s pursuit of the 24-year-old had ended in failure.

Widespread reports on Friday suggested the player had undergone a medical ahead of a proposed move to Anfield, but Liverpool were unable to agree a deal with his club, Dnipro.

BBC Sport’s Ben Smith explained “Liverpool will not be signing Yevhen Konoplyanka today. I don’t have the details of why but the deal is off.”

Brendan Rodgers had earlier explained that the deal was “a little bit complicated.”
