Brendan Rodgers: The Liverpool manager was very impressed with Eddie Howe's Bournemouth side.

Brendan Rodgers: The Liverpool manager was very impressed with Eddie Howe's Bournemouth side.

Brendan Rodgers has tipped Bournemouth to join Liverpool in the Premier League next season after watching his side put the Championship leaders out of the Capital One Cup.

Liverpool secured a semi-final clash with Chelsea after a double from Raheem Sterling and a goal from Lazar Markovic gave them a 3-1 win at Goldsands Stadium.

Despite his team’s win, Bournemouth made a very positive impression on Rodgers and he is confident Eddie Howe will lead them to promotion this season.

"They are a wonderful team and have got an outstanding young manager," Rodgers said. "They can go on and get promoted. They thoroughly deserve it, they are a wonderful club.

"So good luck to them, hopefully they can keep going. I think they can get promoted, that was 12 games unbeaten and I saw their win against Cardiff (a 5-3 victory last week) and some of their other games.

Organised

"They look a real threat and they are super organised while playing good football at a good intensity. The crowd really help and they go away to places like Wolves and win.

"They have got every chance to get through and in Eddie they have an outstanding young manager, I would be delighted for him."

One negative for Liverpool on the night was that Dejan Lovren had to be withdrawn with a groin injury at half-time and replaced by Mamadou Sakho.

The injury puts Lovren’s participation in Sunday’s game against Arsenal in doubt but Rodgers was keen to stress he has not been ruled out.

"We will just see and assess that," Rodgers added. "He had a little sort of nick in his groin and we will see how that is."

Analysis Ringkas Tentang Sterling!

cuma isu shot ratio menjadi isu.

Bournemouth cuba meniru taktikal Middlesbrough&039;s yg bermain compact defensive berlandaskan asid 4-4-2.. Liverpool mengekalkan disiplin yg sama di OT. Keep the ball low, create chances dan keypasses. Cuma beza kali ini, pemain lebih patience utk break the opponents defensive core. Cuba menukar banyak arah sebelum melancarkan keypasses.

Ada komen menyatakan, ala banyak passes sebab back passes..Let make it clear. Back passes yg negatif adalah hantaran kebelakang yg berbentuk defensive ..Maksudya , bukan dalam entities build up. Hantar kebelakang untuk pasif. Dalam kes semalam, back pass dalam latitude dan line yg tinggi adalah dikira build up atau main ayam Kat orang 90-an. Ia tidak disebut back passes / defensive back pass. Ia adalah change directions and start from back 3. Janganlah anda tak faham menilai mana satu back passes yg defensive atau tak ada tujuan dengan simple back passes utk build up. Confident to hold the ball dan terus build up.

Goal kedua adalah individual brilliant, inside out dribble and low shots tanpa teragak agak.

Adakah dia bersedia menjadi False 9? Banyak saya dah tulis pasal Sterling. Dia dari natural inverted winger ditukar kepada no. 10 sebab sistem Rodgers tak memerlukan in the crosses yg banyak. Kini new challenge dia belajar false 9.

kelebihan

Analysis taktikal saya agak tepat semalam.haha

Yg pasti ramalan saya tepat semalam :p

Brendan Rodgers has given an update on the injury suffered by Dejan Lovren during Liverpool’s 3-1 victory over Bournemouth in the League Cup on Wednesday night.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Saturday, November 29, 2014: Liverpool's substitute Dejan Lovren during the Premier League match against Stoke City at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Lovren played the opening 45 minutes as part of a back three alongside fellow centre-backs Kolo Toure and Martin Skrtel, with Glen Johnson having been sidelined following his injury at Old Trafford.

The former Southampton centre-back had to be replaced by Mamadou Sakho and the Frenchman, who was making his Liverpool appearance since featuring against Middlesbrough back in September, is on stand-by to feature against Arsenal on Sunday if Lovren fails to make a swift recovery.

It would be just Sakho's third Premier League appearance of the season, having made 18 last season as Rodgers' men just fell short of the title.

"We will just see and assess that," Rodgers added. "He had a little sort of nick in his groin and we will see how that is."

Rodgers also took the opportunity Rodgers to tip Bournemouth to join Liverpool in the top flight next season.

Having survived a couple of early scares Liverpool took control and a double from Raheem Sterling either side of Lazar Markovic's first Reds goal set up a two-legged Capital One Cup semi-final with Chelsea next month.

But after Dan Gosling pulled a goal back the vocal travelling support endured some nervy moments, not least when former Everton midfielder Gosling rattled Brad Jones' right-hand post.

And Rodgers has seen enough of Eddie Howe's men, who came into that clash on the back of a 12-game unbeaten run, to suggest they will be heading to the likes of Anfield in the top flight come August.

"They are a wonderful team and have got an outstanding young manager," Rodgers explained. "They can go on and get promoted, they thoroughly deserve it, they are a wonderful club.

"So good luck to them, hopefully they can keep going. I think they can get promoted, that was 12 games unbeaten and I saw their win against Cardiff (a 5-3 victory last week) and some of their other games.

"They look a real threat and they are super organised while playing good football at a good intensity. The crowd really help and they go away to places like Wolves and win.

Dejan Lovren injury update and praise for Bournemouth

After a positive display in Liverpool’s 3-1 victory over AFC Bournemouth, Jack Lusby ask whether this can spark a revival in fortunes for Brendan Rodgers.

Brendan Rodgers’ new tactical system at Liverpool proved a masterstroke on Wednesday night, as his side danced around Eddie Howe’s AFC Bournemouth side in a proficient attacking display.

Two goals from Raheem Sterling and another from a lively Lazar Markovic were enough to see off an off-colour Cherries side, although ex-Everton midfielder Dan Gosling did trouble the Liverpool defence, and scored Bournemouth’s consolation effort.

Creating consistent chances in the attacking third, this system looked hugely impressive.

Of course, this was not the first time Rodgers used this system, as a surprising 3-4-2-1 lined up in Sunday’s 3-0 loss away to Manchester United.

After that game, Rodgers praised how his side “created more chances today than we have done for five or six games.”

“I don’t think we deserved to be on the end of the scoreline.”

It wasn’t a poor display, although Rodgers’ words somewhat do a disservice to United’s clinical approach to victory, but there was work to be done as the result suggested.

For all the creation, Liverpool’s passing was disjointed and Sterling’s finishing in particular belying his role as a centre-forward; in short, Rodgers’ needed to tighten the joints in this new system.

As a comparatively low-profile affair, Wednesday night’s Bournemouth victory proved the perfect exercise for Rodgers to do so.

Vs. Bournemouth

Standing with the torque wrench in the technical area, the manager was even helped by Tommy Elphick’s dismal defensive work and Callum Wilson’s welcome on-goal profligacy in stabilising this loose formation.

Against Bournemouth, Liverpool played reminiscent of the arrogant attacking side of last season, with a true flourish.

Sterling’s opening goal proved the perfect evidence of this.

Rounding off a move which contained a stunning 51 passes, from defence to attack, Sterling deftly nodded home a cushioned header from Jordan Henderson after a brilliant cross from Markovic.

With this being his first headed goal for the club, Sterling proved himself a surprisingly accomplished finisher at the Goldsands Stadium.

Like against United, Sterling once again had the most shots, with six, but this time was able to translate these into goals—only two of the forward’s shots were on target, but both saw the net bulge.

Sterling’s second outlined his ability to dribble and bamboozle defences, and it is this element that Liverpool have been missing in a forward

The Reds’ other scorer against Bournemouth, Markovic, proved a devastating outlet on the left-hand side of the attack.

Aside from his hand in Sterling’s first, Markovic also added Liverpool’s second with a confident, placed finished from the edge of the box.

Markovic, after impressive cameos against both Real Madrid and United in recent weeks, went some way to evidence why Rodgers paid £20 million for his services in the summer; Liverpool’s busiest attacking player, Markovic made 80 touches of the ball on Wednesday night.

Markovic Touches vs Bournemouth

Formally fielded as a left wing-back, and although both he and Henderson were primarily utilised as attacking support, Markovic also proved a diligent defensive prospect.

Markovic made six tackles, more than any other player on the pitch.

Overall, these two performances hallmarked an impressive attacking display, with the likes of Adam Lallana and Philippe Coutinho also impressing in victory—but is it too soon to call this a comeback?

Vs. Arsenal?

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Sunday September 2, 2012: Liverpool's manager Brendan Rodgers and Arsenal's manager Arsene Wenger during the Premiership match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

After the game, the Liverpool Echo ’s James Pearce opined: “For an hour Rodgers’ men recaptured the kind of swagger which was their calling card during the dizzy heights of last season’s title challenge.”

However, it must be measured that this was a performance against Championship opposition—albeit a hugely impressive, table-topping outfit.

There were still huge defensive deficiencies apparent at the Goldsands, and an early effort from Wilson is the perfect example of this.

The 22-year-old foxed both Martin Skrtel and Dejan Lovren, before poking the ball just wide of Brad Jones’ goal.

Limp defensive displays were another calling card of last season, and this continued on Wednesday night.

With Liverpool facing the prospect of another Premier League top-four rival clash on Sunday, as they welcome Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal to Anfield, Rodgers must be wary that this successful display doesn’t hide these blemishes.

After the game, Rodgers praised Sterling’s display, saying “[watching that] you think of Alexis Sanchez when he plays for Arsenal.”

Sanchez is the man that Liverpool must fear on Sunday, and “his speed in front of the back four,” as Rodgers attributes to Sterling, will be a considerable threat.

This is where Rodgers’ formation will be tested.

Mamadou Sakho replaced Lovren at half-time and evidenced a stable ability to take the ball and move from defence, and also proved strong at the back, making more successful tackles (two) than Skrtel and Lovren combined.

BOURNEMOUTH, ENGLAND - Wednesday, December 17, 2014: Liverpool's Mamadou Sakho in action against Bournemouth during the Football League Cup 5th Round match at Dean Court. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Rodgers must look to Sakho, in combination with a confident Kolo Toure, to complement Skrtel’s brash physicality in a back three.

This new system is proving a welcome innovation from Brendan Rodgers, with performance levels rising, and the likes of Lazar Markovic, Adam Lallana and Raheem Sterling must continue their roles against Arsenal on Sunday.

But the manager must next address his leaky defence in order to compete.

Is this new system the right way forward for Liverpool? Let us know in the comments below.

After Raheem Sterling rediscovered his composure to see off Bournemouth, Brendan Rodgers will be encouraged that his new system can help Liverpool beat Arsenal on Sunday, writes Matthew Stanger.

Despite being billed as a tough test for Liverpool, the League Cup trip to Bournemouth provided a welcome distraction following the double disappointment against Basel and Manchester United. The Reds were rattled by the hosts' bright start, but soon settled to display their Premier League class and cruise into an insurmountable lead. So much for Bournemouth's 12-match unbeaten run that may have caused Brendan Rodgers a few worries prior to kick-off.

Similar to Liverpool's 3-0 defeat to United, the game was settled by superior finishing. While Callum Wilson and Yann Kermorgant wasted two excellent chances for the hosts, Raheem Sterling remedied his profligacy at Old Trafford to open and close the scoring. It was vindication for both the forward and his manager, offering plenty of encouragement ahead of Sunday's meeting with Arsenal at Anfield.

As Rodgers revealed before facing United, the idea behind his 3-4-3 false nine formation is to inject more movement into Liverpool's play. The Reds have struggled for a potent attacking plan for much of the campaign - particularly in recent weeks as Rodgers has attempted to tighten up at the back - but finally look like posing a convincing threat, despite failing to beat David De Gea on Sunday.

On this occasion, Sterling's intelligent runs proved decisive. Replacing Rickie Lambert at the point of Liverpool's attack, the 20-year-old offers an entirely different approach to the target man - but it is one seemingly more suited to Rodgers settling on a balanced system. That was evident as Sterling ghosted into the box to finish off a 51-pass (or 52, depending on who was counting) move for the opening goal, in which every Liverpool player apart from Brad Jones had a touch.

However, it was his second strike that hinted at a return to last season's explosive attacking play. After Kolo Toure made a smart pass out of defence to Adam Lallana, Sterling cut in from the right, pointed to where he wanted the ball, twisted poor Tommy Elphick inside out and then fired into the corner. In three passes the Reds covered the length of the pitch to make the result safe; it was the sort of incisive move that became so familiar in the previous campaign.

Predictably, there were several nervy moments in the Liverpool defence after Dan Gosling's strike threatened a fight-back, yet on the whole Rodgers will be satisfied with his team's performance. Some will argue 'it was only Bournemouth', but that shouldn't deter the Reds as they attempt to rebuild their confidence. A convincing win over the Championship leaders to set up a semi-final against Chelsea certainly isn't a bad place to start.

Role revives Sterling in time for test

Unknown   at  19:34  No comments

LIVERPOOL NAK CUBA DAPATKAN PENYERANG CILIK ITALI DARI AS ROMA

SERONOK GAK JADI STRIKER NI - STERLING

Duo SAS England?

Brendan Rodgers believes Liverpool are "slowly getting there" after they put their recent misery behind them to beat Bournemouth and seal their place in the semi-final of the Capital One Cup.

Having watched his side exit the Champions League, Rodgers saw them lose 3-0 to Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday, failing to get on the scoresheet largely thanks to David de Gea's brilliance.

But Rodgers' new system with two-goal Raheem Sterling as a false nine, flanked by the creative talents of Philippe Coutinho, Adam Lallana and Lazar Markovic, who opened his Liverpool account, proved too much for Championship leaders Bournemouth on Wednesday night.

Having been criticised in many quarters for packing his side to face Basle with too many central midfielders Rodgers has turned to his playmakers and been rewarded.

The four showed bundles of attacking flair and quality in the opening hour as Liverpool ran out 3-1 winners in their League Cup quarter-final to convince their manager that his team are on the right track again.

"That was as good as I've seen from us this season," he said. "Slowly we are getting there, I've said that my teams have shown at Liverpool that we get better and better.

"A lot of players are adapting, you see Markovic out there and he put in an outstanding performance.

"I've been looking to find ways and solutions to make us more creative as we haven't been that at all this season and that is the mark of the team."

Sterling's close-range opener came at the end of a 52-pass move, and Rodgers said he knew his side would need to keep possession if they were to strike first in a bid to end Bournemouth's 12-game unbeaten run.

"It was brilliant," he said. "We work very hard on our possession, movement and creativity and it has taken us a long time for us to find rhythm this season but what has never stopped is the work rate of the players.

"It took character and quality to get through. It doesn't matter if it is from one pass or 52 but the moment of the game did require patience."

The semi-final draw pits Liverpool against Chelsea and the two sides will do battle over two legs in 2015 in a repeat of the 2005 final.

Rodgers added: "If you want to win the competition, and that is our objective, then we've got to beat the best teams.

"It is over two legs and we will really relish that opportunity."

Dejan Lovren was forced off at the break with a groin injury and Rodgers says the defender will be assessed before the weekend's clash with Arsenal.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers says Raheem Sterling has all the qualities needed to play as a striker on a more regular basis.

Sterling scored twice after being switched to playing up front in Liverpool's 3-1 victory over Bournemouth in the League Cup quarter-finals on Wednesday.

"He can play across the front line," said Rodgers, who likened Sterling to Arsenal and Chile forward Alexis Sanchez.

"I think his best position is on the side from the left, coming inside and making runs in behind, but I played him in the position because I think he can play it.

"As a young player and in the youth team at Liverpool he's played as a striker and he's got the qualities to do it."

The brace was the first time Sterling had scored since September, with Liverpool floundering in 11th place in the Premier League after last season's near miss in the title race.

"Raheem has got a wee bit of stick which I find incredible," added Rodgers, who conceded that Sterling has been required to try to compensate for the loss of Luis Suarez to Barcelona and Daniel Sturridge to injury.

The prolific pair scored 55 goals between them for Liverpool last season.

"Raheem's been outstanding for us. Last season he was a young kid of 18 or 19 playing up top with some world-class players. This season he hasn't got that, that's the reality, but he's kept going and a lot of the focus has been on him.

"He hasn't scored the goals that maybe people expect of him but it's not what I expect of him.

"I expect him to create and score goals over the course of the season. He was just playing freely - we gave him that striker's role but he's not someone who backs into defenders.

"We want him running between people and not be tackled, and he dropped in very well and his pace and dribbling ability is there for all to see."

Meanwhile, Sterling himself played down his personal achievement and instead praised the team's overall performance.

"It's been difficult the last few weeks but I think the boys did really well," Sterling said.

"We deserved it, we played some great football at times and it's all credit to the lads.

"The most important thing is for the team to win and I'm happy to be involved, in and amongst the goals, but as long as the team wins I'm happy."

Liverpool progressed to the semi-finals of the League Cup for the 15th time after overcoming Championship league leaders Bournemouth. Ben Twelves picks five talking points from the victory.

Bournemouth 1-3 Liverpool

League Cup quarter-final, Wednesday 17th December 2014

Goals from Raheem Sterling either side of Lazar Markovic’s composed strike guided Liverpool into the next round of the competition, where they’ll face a tough two legged affair against Premier League table toppers Chelsea.

It was once again a much better attacking display from the Reds for the second game running in the new 3-4-2-1 system, though defensively there were still a few nervy moments as Bournemouth pushed for a way back into the match which did see them notch what proved to be only a consolation effort.

It was another small step in the right direction for Rodgers and his team ahead of Arsenal’s arrival at Anfield on Sunday afternoon, and there were a number of positives for the first time in a long while, despite the few negatives on the night.

Attack on the way back

The three man attack of Sterling joined by Adam Lallana and Philippe Coutinho proved a dangerous combination again and this time Liverpool had the goals to show for the intricate work in the final third of the pitch.

There was again much more fluidity to the Reds’ attacking play, with the influential Lallana and Coutinho linking well on a number of occasions – especially in the first half – and movement off the back was infinitely improved with all three players picking up intelligent positions between the Bournemouth lines.

The improvement was epitomised with the first goal – a fantastic team effort – that boasted the flair, creativity and ruthlessness in front of goal that has been missing so far this campaign and it was far more enjoyable watching Liverpool edging closer towards full flow.

Brad Jones struggles again

BOURNEMOUTH, ENGLAND - Wednesday, December 17, 2014: Liverpool's goalkeeper Brad Jones slips as he controls the ball against Bournemouth during the Football League Cup 5th Round match at Dean Court. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Jones kept his place in the team despite an uninspiring performance at Old Trafford on Sunday as Simon Mignolet drops to the bench ‘indefinitely’ but once again the Australian ‘keeper failed to impress on the night.

A number of sliced and unconvincing clearances – reminiscent of the benched Belgian – put Liverpool on the back foot on a couple of occasions and while the goal conceded wasn’t entirely his fault, Jones should have done a lot better with Dan Gosling’s weak strike that crept underneath him.

It could be argued that Bournemouth’s consolation is the third goal that the second-choice ‘keeper should at least have dealt better with, of four conceded in the last two games, and even though Mignolet rightly had his fair share of criticism, Jones shows little sign that he can offer anything above the Belgium international who has proven to be a better shot stopper at least.

Overuse of Sterling and Gerrard?

BOURNEMOUTH, ENGLAND - Wednesday, December 17, 2014: Liverpool's manager Brendan Rodgers before the Football League Cup 5th Round match against AFC Bournemouth at Dean Court. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

On a largely positive night for Rodgers and his team, the Liverpool manager did produce a negative at the Goldsands Stadium where his use of substitutes available proved a frustrating feat.

After playing back-to-back 90 minutes against Basel and Manchester United on Sunday, Steven Gerrard needed to be preserved as best as possible ahead of another tough clash against Arsenal, as did Raheem Sterling – who has played the most minutes of an outfield player in the Premier League – but instead the duo played all but stoppage time together.

Emre Can was the logical man to come on and he did, but disappointingly it was for Coutinho when the Captain’s needs were far greater and with Rickie Lambert and Fabio Borini options from the bench, the Italian was introduced for additional time replacing Gerrard rather than after Sterling grabbed his second of the night early in the second half.

Ahead of a big game on Sunday, Rodgers should have worked better to afford key players as much resting time as possible.

Lazar and Lallana come to life

A much improved Liverpool attack for the second successive match came in no small part to the excellent work of Lazar Markovic and Adam Lallana – who was arguably the Reds’ man of the match on the night.

Lallana was hugely influential for Rodgers’ improved side going forwards with his tidy footwork and clever play between the lines causing issues for the home side, and he displayed some excellent link-up play with Coutinho and Sterling throughout – almost opening the scoring himself with a scorching left foot strike after a quick exchange with the Brazilian.

Recent impressive cameo displays saw Markovic handed a rare start, and the pacey Serbian didn’t disappoint as he played a fundamental part in Sterling’s opening goal before registering on the score-sheet himself seven minutes later with a composed finish.

BOURNEMOUTH, ENGLAND - Wednesday, December 17, 2014: Liverpool's Lazar Markovic scores the second goal against Bournemouth during the Football League Cup 5th Round match at Dean Court. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

The 20-year-old – deployed on wide on the left of a four man midfield – offered an outlet for Liverpool with his direct style proving dangerous throughout and he took on board the defensive duties that come with the role – tracking back and helping both Dejan Lovren and Mamadou Sakho a number of times – particularly second half.

Impressive performances from both of the summer arrivals should see them start again on Sunday.

Sterling shines as the striker

Bagging a well taken brace on the night, Sterling proved his ability to play as a striker – hitting back at premature claims that the role isn’t for him after his goalless showing at Old Trafford.

BOURNEMOUTH, ENGLAND - Wednesday, December 17, 2014: Liverpool's Raheem Sterling scores the first goal against Bournemouth during the Football League Cup 5th Round match at Dean Court. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

The 20-year-old’s pace caused huge problems for the Bournemouth backline throughout – and his direct threat in behind the opposition defence allowed for the attacking play-makers to work in the space opened up by his lightning speed.

Strikers will be judged on goals and Sterling notched twice with a well taken glancing header from Jordan Henderson’s header back and a composed finish after turning Tommy Elphick inside-out having been released by the impressive Lallana.

He almost grabbed his first hat-trick for the club too, but Sterling sliced his effort wide of the near post after a clever flick from the former Southampton man once again created the opportunity.

Sterling’s lack of a finishing touch overshadowed a good performance in the new position on Sunday, but he illustrated perfectly his capability as a genuine striking option going forwards.

Manchester United v Liverpool - Premier League

Brendan Rodgers revealed his bemusement at criticism of Raheem Sterling after his man of the match display fired Liverpool into the League Cup semi-finals.

BOURNEMOUTH, ENGLAND - Wednesday, December 17, 2014: Liverpool's manager Brendan Rodgers before the Football League Cup 5th Round match against AFC Bournemouth at Dean Court. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

The 20-year-old shone in the ‘false nine’ position against Championship leaders Bournemouth and netted either side of Lazar Markovic’s first goal for the Reds as they teed up a two-legged semi against Chelsea.

Sterling made the trip to the south coast on the back of a 22-match goal drought which stretched back to September, having found David De Gea in world class form in Sunday’s 3-0 defeat to Manchester United.

His manager questioned why the attacker, who continues to be linked with a move to Real Madrid as he is yet to sign a new deal at Anfield, has come under fire in recent weeks.

Rodgers said: “I thought he was outstanding. The kid, for some reason, seems to be getting a lot of stick off a lot of people for something.

“His contract situation is absolutely nothing to do with him and his representatives are working with the club.

“He is, as you can see, happy and enjoying his football. At Old Trafford he was unfortunate not to score and in that role he plays you think of Alexis Sanchez when he plays for Arsenal.

“He is not an out-and-out striker but his speed in front of the back four and behind them causes problems and you’ve seen that with him here, he can get it, turn and go at defenders. He has been like that all season and been a real catalyst for us.”

Sterling ended a stunning passing move with a close-range header to break the deadlock and he put the game beyond the Cherries with a textbook run and low finish. The England winger should really have taken home the matchball but dragged an effort wide after being superbly teed up by Adam Lallana, one of a number of chances squandered by a revitalised Liverpool.

And Rodgers saw plenty in the opening hour to suggest the worst weeks are behind his struggling side. “It was an outstanding performance,” he said. “I can certainly see signs that we are getting back to where we were. There is a long way to go but this was a tough game, coming to a side top of the Championship.

“They are going well and for us to come and dominate like we did and score the goals that we did was very pleasing.”

While Eddie Howe admitted the technical quality of Liverpool in the first half proved to be too much for this table-toppers he was bemused by the unusual circumstances of Liverpool’s second goal.

Cherries captain Tommy Elphick mistook a whistle from the crowd for referee Mark Clattenburg’s and stopped as Philippe Coutinho went to shoot at Artur Boruc’s goal. The ball fell to Markovic, who doubled Liverpool’s lead – and in the midst of the celebrations Elphick was seen pointing at his ears to explain the error.

“I don’t know what to say on that, I have never really seen that before,” Howe said. “I haven’t had a long conversation with the players, I am aware Tommy stopped because the thought the referee had blown.

“I heard the whistle myself from the stand. It’s a bizarre one and Tommy has obviously genuinely believed it to be the referee’s – but there you go.

“I’m sure the person who has done it wouldn’t have meant it to have cost us a goal.”

Brendan Rodgers: Clashes with friend Jose Mourinho in League Cup semi-finals

Brendan Rodgers: Clashes with friend Jose Mourinho in League Cup semi-finals

Liverpool will face Chelsea in the Capital One Cup semi-finals, while Sky Bet League 1 side Sheffield United will take on Tottenham.

Liverpool won 3-1 at Bournemouth on Wednesday night, while Chelsea put out a strong side to win by the same margin at Derby on Tuesday.

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho won his first trophy in England by beating Liverpool to the League Cup in 2005, and his side will be away in the first leg.

"It will be a fantastic tie," Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers told Sky Sports.

"If you want to win this competition you have to play against the good sides.

"The most important thing was getting through, but our performance was brilliant.

"We're into the semi-final, it's over two legs and it didn't matter who we got. We needed to get there, it's Chelsea and we look forward to it."

The ties are set to be played on January 20 and 21 and January 27 and 28.

Sky Bet League 1 side Sheffield United will face Tottenham in the other semi-final tie.

The Blades saw off Premier League Southampton at Bramall Lane on Tuesday night, and will face Spurs at their home ground in the second of the ties.

Spurs booked their last-four spot with a 4-0 demolition of Newcastle but will not necessarily relish a clash with lower-league opposition.

Nigel Clough's Blades went to Wembley in the FA Cup semi-finals last season, while the template in this tournament was set by Bradford going all the way to the final in 2013.
