Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is hopeful striker Daniel Sturridge will be fit for Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final against Aston Villa.

The England international pulled out of the Barclays Premier League clash against Newcastle on Monday after feeling the effects of a hip injury suffered against Blackburn last week.

The 25-year-old will be assessed in the coming days but Rodgers will give him every chance to prove his fitness for Wembley.

He said: “He will hopefully be okay for the weekend. I will know more in the week.

“He feels reasonably fine so we are hoping by the middle of the week we will have an indication where he is at.”

Rodgers, however, was more guarded when asked about the availability of controversial forward Mario Balotelli.

The Italian was again absent due to illness and has now not been involved for three successive games.

Rodgers said: “Mario is still ill. He was not quite fit enough (to face Newcastle). He has had on and off sickness issues.”

Rodgers did confirm that defender Mamadou Sakho would be out for “three to four weeks” with the hamstring injury sustained in the FA Cup quarter-final replay win at Ewood Park.

That means the 25-year-old Frenchman could miss Premier League encounters with West Brom, Hull and QPR as well as the Villa tie.

Liverpool defeated Newcastle 2-0 on Monday evening, as the Reds just about remain in the hunt for a top-four finish. Henry Jackson saw some standout displays on the night, but also a couple of disappointing defensive performances.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Monday, April 13, 2015: Liverpool's Joe Allen is mobbed by team-mates as he celebrates scores the second goal against Newcastle United during the Premier League match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

For a while, this game felt like it had the potential to be a cricket score in Liverpool’s favour.

A dire opening by John Carver’s hapless Magpies saw the Reds opening up their defence at will, and Raheem Sterling‘s excellent opener looked set to give Brendan Rodgers‘ men an easy night at the office.

It didn’t quite pan out that way, however, and Anfield grew increasingly nervy after half-time, with the defence all at sea and the visitors bossing proceedings.

Joe Allen‘s well-taken strike after 70 minutes, his first goal at Anfield, eased those nerves though, and Moussa Sissoko was sent-off late on to effectively put the game to bed.

Liverpool strolled to three crucial points in the end, but who impressed and who endured an off night?

Brilliance of Coutinho – again

BLACKBURN, ENGLAND - Wednesday, April 8, 2015: Liverpool's Philippe Coutinho Correia celebrates scoring the first goal against Blackburn Rovers during the FA Cup 6th Round Quarter-Final Replay match at Ewood Park. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

There were several standout players for the Reds, but none shone brighter than Philippe Coutinho.

The brilliant Brazilian ran the show from start to finish, and at times appeared to be on another stratosphere to anyone else on the pitch.

Occupying a central role – the so-called ‘false 9′ position – Coutinho enjoyed seven successful dribbles, five shots and two key passes. His general vision and eye for the unpredictable were a constant joy. One audacious back-heel in the first-half was particularly outrageous.

When Coutinho is in this kind of form there are not many more aesthetically pleasing players to watch in the Premier League.

Given his tender years, his consistency and decision making will only improve in the coming years. Let’s just hope his peak years are in a Liverpool shirt.

Sterling was also a constant threat for much of the game, despite a few poor finishes, while Jordan Henderson produced another influential captain’s performance in the absence of Steven Gerrard.

Erratic Johnson

MANCHESTER, ENGLAND - Monday, August 25, 2014: Liverpool's Glen Johnson injured during the Premier League match against Manchester City at the City of Manchester Stadium. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

The news that Glen Johnson will leave Liverpool this summer has been met with ironic cheers by a number of Reds supporters, and this display will have done little to alter their opinion of him.

The 30-year-old produced an insipid performance all night long, following a rare good outing against Blackburn last week, doing very little right – although, there was no trademark cut inside and drag a shot wide with his left foot, so small positives there.

Time and time again he switched off defensively, his use of the ball was careless and lazy, and his general demeanour was not one of a player desperate to prove his worth.

Liverpool’s defence always has a more shaky, calamitous feel to it when Johnson is playing, and sad as it may be to ridicule your own players, his imminent exit can only be a good thing for the club.

Please tell me Rodgers wasn’t serious when he said he wanted Johnson to sign a new contract?

Dejan’s Fragile Confidence

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Monday, April 13, 2015: Newcastle United's Gabriel Obertan is tackled by Alberto Moreno and Dejan Lovren during the Premier League match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Amazingly, Johnson still didn’t take home the award for worst Liverpool player. That unwanted accolade goes to Dejan Lovren, who was, at times, abysmal.

The Crotian centre-back, who many felt would solve the Reds’ defensive problems when he moved to Merseyside for big money last summer, brought began brightly but got increasingly worse as the game progressed and his confidence evaporated.

Lovren was extremely fortunate not to give a penalty away in the first-half, following a woefully timed challenge on Ayoze Perez, and the 25-year-old never seemed to recover from that point on.

One shockingly wayward header almost allowed Newcastle to equalise shortly after half-time, and thereafter he spread panic across the defence. Composure was lost.

It was also noticeable how slow the Croatian’s use of the ball was from the back, and it affected the whole tempo of Liverpool’s performance at times.

With the criminally underrated Mamadou Sakho out injured, the Reds’ build-up play felt as ponderous as it did during the dark days of earlier in the season. There’s a reason for that: Lovren was involved in both instances.

Early on Lovren attempted long cross-field balls but it was too predictable and often off target.

It’s harsh to write off a player after just one season at a new club, but if Lovren manages to turn his Anfield career around, it will be of huge surprise to many.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has warned Raheem Sterling about the lifestyle he expects him to lead after the striker was apparently filmed taking nitrous oxide.

CHARLOTTE, USA - Friday, August 1, 2014: Liverpool's manager Brendan Rodgers and Raheem Sterling during a training session at the Bank of America Stadium on day twelve of the club's USA Tour. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Rodgers stressed that he felt Sterling was “super-professional” but he would need to speak to the 20-year-old about the latest reports concerning his off-field behaviour.

Footage of Sterling apparently inhaling the substance, known as “laughing gas” and described as a legal high, was published on a newspaper’s website during Liverpool’s 2-0 defeat of Newcastle at Anfield on Monday.

Sterling impressed on the field, scoring the opening goal, but Rodgers was immediately asked about the report after the game.

Rodgers said: “For me it is something that when you are professional sportsperson at the top level of the game, I don’t think it is something you should be doing. It is as simple as that.

“But I will speak to him on it, to see what he says on it. As you can imagine, I have only seen this today.

“We want players here who are super-professional and focused on their football. I know he is. He very much is focused on his football and improving as a player.

“As I have said before, young players make mistakes. As long as they learn from them, that is what is important.”

The matter adds to the controversy currently surrounding Sterling amid a wrangle over a new contract.

Sterling risked the wrath of supporters a fortnight ago by admitting he had rejected a £100,000-per-week deal in an interview that was not sanctioned by the club recently.

Another newspaper also published pictures of him allegedly smoking a shisha pipe over the weekend.

Rodgers stressed that any repercussions following the latest matter would be dealt with internally. He added that he did not feel the matter was a distraction.

He said: “You see the way he plays. He is a kid that is very strong-willed and strong-minded. He should have had a hat-trick, his performance was outstanding.

“I will speak to Raheem. Until then, it is something we will deal with internally.”

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher believes Sterling has been guilty of naivety on occasion over the last year, with regard to his publicised problems away from the field, but added that the youngster can treat the experience as a learning curve.

“Whether you’re a Premier League footballer or you’re a 20-year-old kid or whatever, you make mistakes at that age. I did and I’m sure we all do,” Carragher said on Sky Sports.

“It’s just important he learns from it because Raheem Sterling, for how good a footballer he is, needs to be on the back pages, not on the front pages and that’s a problem for him in these last few months.

“But he’s a young player, he made a few mistakes and hopefully in years to come he learns from them.”

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson admitted Monday's 2-0 win over Newcastle was much needed as Liverpool put themselves back in the Champions League race after back-to-back league defeats.

Liverpool went into the match on the back of losses to Manchester United and Arsenal in the Premier League, having beaten Blackburn in an FA Cup replay in the meantime.

But goals from Raheem Sterling and Joe Allen gave Liverpool three points as they capitalised on Manchester City's ongoing slump in form to close to within four points of the top four.

"We knew it was an important game for us," Henderson told Sky Sports.

"Obviously the last couple of weeks in the Premier League have been disappointing both with performances and results. We knew today we needed to put that right and I think we did that with a great result for us."

Liverpool had been in red-hot form prior to the those consecutive losses, and Henderson believes they have what it takes to put the pressure on City in the race for next season's Champions League.

"We've got ground to make up but we'll just keep going, keep winning in games and putting in performances," he said. "Come the end of the season, you never know."

After Sterling's fine skill to open the scoring in the ninth minute, Allen capitalised on a defensive mistake to score his first Anfield goal with 20 minutes to go.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Allen said: "It was great to get that goal to give us that two-goal cushion.

"It wasn't my best game but I got the goal and helped the team. It was important after the defeats."

Newcastle had what looked a strong shout for a penalty when Dejan Lovren appeared to foul Ayoze Perez in the area, and Allen admitted he thought it was a spot-kick.

"I did get a good view of it as I'd missed the ball in the build-up," he said. "It look a good shot for a penalty, but I didn't get one the other night. These things happen."

Liverpool moved to within four points of Manchester City after their 2-0 win against Newcastle and Reds boss Brendan Rodgers believes the Premier League champions have ‘opened the door’ to his side’s Champions League qualification chances.

Goals from Raheem Sterling and Joe Allen reignited Liverpool’s chances of a top four finish as they closed the gap on fourth following City’s 4-1 defeat at the hands of rivals Manchester United.

And with just five games remaining, Rodgers thinks there will plenty more twists in the race for Europe.

“It’s a very important result,” Rodgers told Sky Sports.

“We knew we had to win. Manchester City have maybe opened up the door for the teams below but for us we’ve still got to win our games.

“The teams above us are obviously in the advantageous position but if we win our games and, importantly, perform well then we’ll see what happens.

“In the last five games of the season there are still so many twists in it yet. As long as we can win the games it keeps putting pressure on the teams above us.”

Rodgers sprung a surprise tactically at Anfield with Phillipe Coutinho playing in a false nine position and the Liverpool manager praised the Brazilian’s performance as ‘incredible’.

He added: “I thought he was incredible tonight. I thought he showed that he’s really up there with the very best in the most competitive league in the world.

“I played him that sort of role just in front of the centre-halves thinking we could exploit the space in between their midfield and the centre-halves. I thought he was sensational.

“He’s a young player who came in and we only paid £8million for him which was purely down to Inter Milan needing funds. It was nothing to do with ability. I’d seen him play as an 18-year-old in the Champions League against top class players.

“He was a kid who has always had ability but he’s become stronger and a lot more tactically aware. You can see he really orchestrates the game for us and it was an outstanding performance. He’s had a wonderful season.”

John Carver insists the decision to not award Newcastle a ‘stone-wall’ first-half penalty against Liverpool cost his side the chance to claim a positive result.

Trailing to Raheem Sterling’s ninth-minute strike, Newcastle came back into the match just before the break and thought they should have had a spot-kick when Dejan Lovren caught Ayoze Perez in the penalty area.

Referee Lee Mason did not thinks so but Carver thought it was a decision that changed the game.

"I thought it was good reaction after last weekend,” Carver told Sky Sports.

“We had energy and caused Liverpool some real problems and it was a huge decision that changed the game when Perez went down under Lovren's challenge.

"I’ve looked at it. At the time I thought it was stone-wall penalty and looking back at it, it was.”

Carver was extremely disappointed with his side’s effort in their 1-0 derby defeat to Sunderland last weekend but he was proud of his side’s efforts at Anfield.

"We were tentative in the first 10 minutes but we grew into the game and started believing we could actually do something,” he added.

“We had a little bit of pressure on their goal. We didn’t get the penalty and Ayoze Perez forced an outstanding save from the goalkeeper. We were right in the game.

We came here for three points and we’ve got none and that’s disappointing. But I cannot fault the effort that we gave tonight.

“I did last weekend and rightly so but we’ve had a go tonight and it’s disappointing. Last weekend was hard to take but at least we’ve restored some pride.”

Newcastle’s night got worse when Moussa Sissoko received his marching order for two late yellow cards but Carver believes the Frenchman can have absolutely no complaints.

He said: “I think he’s quite fortunate to get a yellow rather than a red if I’m being perfectly honest.

“The fact that he’s give an yellow and another it should be a one match suspension but he’s already been sent off this season so it will be two. Two’s better than three and that’s how we have to look at it.”

Liverpool beat Newcastle 2-0 on Monday evening, in what was a fairly comfortable win against John Carver’s struggling side. We round-up the best social media reaction on the night.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Monday, April 13, 2015: Liverpool's Raheem Sterling celebrates scoring the first goal against Newcastle United during the Premier League match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

For most of the game, this was an absolute walk in the park against a lifeless Magpies side, but there were moments of worry inside Anfield.

The Reds completely bossed the opening 45 minutes but only had Raheem Sterling‘s superb solo effort to show for it, and Newcastle briefly dominated after half-time.

Joe Allen scored his first Anfield goal with 20 minutes left on the clock, before Moussa Sissoko’s sending off compounded a forgettable evening for the visitors.

Sterling was bright all evening, as was the brilliant Philippe Coutinho, but the Englishman’s rash finishing was the difference between him scoring one and three. Jordan Henderson and Simon Mignolet were also terrifc.

Dejan Lovren and Glen Johnson looked like disasters waiting to happen in defence, and the likes of Mamadou Sakho and Martin Skrtel were sorely missed in that area.

The win puts Liverpool within four points of Manchester City, as their hopes of finishing in the top four just about remain alive.

Here is how social media reacted to the game:

‘Dark Metal’ on the forum:

A job done, we really need strikers though, whether that be time on the pitch for the ones we have or new ones only those in power know.

But looking at the table and seeing Southampton with a +22 GD vs our +11 hurts.

‘Hope in your heart’ on the forum:

Not a great performance, but still our players beat what was in front of them, and that was what they had to do. Two goals and another clean sheet for Mignolet. Now we can focus on Wembley!

‘scouseheadross’ on the forum:

Lucas was exceptional today, Can excellent and Coutinho breathtaking, if a little wasteful with some of his passing. Henderson was very good too and Mignolet made a brilliant save early on.

Liverpool have said they are aware of footage of striker Raheem Sterling apparently taking nitrous oxide.

Pictures published on The Sun‘s website appear to show the England international passing out unconscious after taking the substance, described as a legal high.

The report surfaced as Sterling was playing – and scoring – in Liverpool’s Barclays Premier League game against Newcastle at Anfield.

A club spokesperson said: “We are aware of the story and intend to speak to the player. Any subsequent action will be taken internally.”

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers was expected to address the issue further in his post-match press conference.

The matter comes at a time when considerable controversy surrounds 20-year-old Sterling following the apparent breakdown of contract talks with the club.

Sterling risked the wrath of supporters by admitting he had rejected a £100,000-per-week deal in a recent interview that was not sanctioned by the club.

Another newspaper also published pictures of him allegedly smoking a shisha pipe over the weekend.

Liverpool closed the gap on Manchester City to just four points after goals from Raheem Sterling and Joe Allen handed them a 1-0 win against Newcastle.

It took Brendan Rodgers’ side just nine minutes to take the lead as Jordan Henderson’s pass found Sterling, who fired past Tim Krul for his 11th goal of the season.

Liverpool wasted a host of first-half chances and could have paid the price as Newcastle thought they should have been handed a route back into the match when Dejan Lovren appeared to foul Ayoze Perez in the penalty area, but referee Lee Mason waved the claims away.

The hosts eventually went on to seal all three points thanks to Joe Allen’s smart finish in the 72nd minute before Moussa Sissoko saw red for two yellow cards for the visitors.

The result sees Liverpool reignite their challenge for Champions League qualification before they head to Wembley for next weekend’s FA Cup semi-final against Aston Villa.

After Manchester United’s 4-2 win over rivals Manchester City, Liverpool knew victory would propel them back into the race for Champions League qualification and they started in confident fashion.

They got their reward for their fast start in the ninth minute when the impressive Henderson’s pass found Sterling on the left edge of the penalty area. The England international cut inside and beat two Newcastle defenders before curling a beautiful right foot shot beyond the dive of Tim Krul.

Liverpool went close again minutes later as Lovren found Albert Moreno, who shot from a tight angle but Krul beat the ball away to safety.

The home side were dominant and this time it was Coutinho’s turn to trouble the visitor’s defence. The Brazilian ghosted past Jack Colback and Mike Williamson before cutting the ball across goal, but Sterling could not reach it with the goal gaping.

Newcastle had Krul to thank once again in the 36th minute as he dived full stretch to produce a brilliant one-handed save to keep out Lucas’ free header but despite Liverpool’s dominance John Carver’s men could have been level at the break.

The visitors thought they should have had a penalty when Lovren swung a clumsy leg at Perez. The Croatian defender missed the ball but Mason remained unmoved.

Newcastle were livid but it did not stop them pressing forward and they were only denied an equaliser just before the break by a brilliant diving save from Simon Mignolet as Perez’s header looked destined for the far corner.

Carver’s side started the better of the two sides in the second-half and Mignolet was forced into action again, punching Remy Cabella’s cross clear with Perez waiting to pounce.

Liverpool looked nervy at the back but Sterling tried to get them moving forward again, beating Ryan Taylor but Daryll Janmaat was quickly across to make a vital intervention.

In the 58th minute Sterling was in the thick of the action again and it was a moment he will want to forget. Taylor made a real hash of Henderson's cross and the ball fell to Sterling, who placed his shot wide of the post from six yards.

Liverpool were not made to pay for that miss though as Coutinho’s corner eventually found Emre Can, who dinked the ball to Allen. The Welshman kept his composure to stab the ball past Krul to score his first goal at Anfield.

Newcastle’s night got worse when Sissoko was booked twice in five minutes to hand the club their sixth sending off in as many matches against Liverpool.

Sterling had one final chance to round the scoring off, receiving the ball unmarked 16-yards from goal but he couldn’t keep his shot on target.

Newcastle, who have now suffered five straight league defeats, stay in 13th but Liverpool, who Rodgers believed were out of the race for fourth after defeat at Arsenal, move up into fifth just four points behind Manchester City.
