Luis Suarez and Steven Gerrard played together at Liverpool between 2011 and 2014

Luis Suarez and Steven Gerrard played together at Liverpool between 2011 and 2014

Steven Gerrard says former team-mate Luis Suarez is "probably the best" he has ever played with, as the pair prepare to meet again on the pitch.

Barcelona play their first match in the International Champions Cup on Tuesday against Gerrard's Los Angeles Galaxy.

And the midfielder, who played with Suarez at Liverpool between 2011 and 2014, seeing the Uruguayan score 82 goals in 133 appearances, was full of praise.

"I don't think anyone ever looks forward to playing against Luis Suarez, he is a fantastic talent and a very dangerous player," Gerrard told Barcelona's website.

"He is a fantastic team-mate, probably the best player I have played with," he added.

"He's a good guy, a family man away from the pitch, we keep in touch and have supported each other throughout our careers."

After a slow start following his Barca debut in the La Liga 'Clasico' against Real Madrid last October, Suarez started to come into top form around the turn of the year, and became a key component of Luis Enrique's treble-winning side.

"For the first few matches, I was lacking rhythm," Suarez told reporters after a training session in the US.

"That's what pre-seasons are for, to work and try to contribute from the start.

"This year, starting at the same pace as my team mates, it will be different."

Karim Benzema: Looks set to stay at Real Madrid

Karim Benzema: Looks set to stay at Real Madrid

Arsenal have seen a £31.3million bid for Real Madrid's Karim Benzema rejected, while Norwich are the leading the race to sign Rickie Lambert.

ARSENAL'S BID FOR BENZEMA REJECTED

Arsenal have seen a big-money bid for Real Madrid's Karim Benzema rejected, according to the Daily Express.

Real were initially open to selling the the striker but it would seem that they've had a change of heart and still want to keep the France international.

Arsene Wenger has been looking to strengthen his striking options, as the Gunners look for a sustained title challenge this season, but it would appear that Benzema is no longer an option.

Arsenal have been linked with Dortmund hitman Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Napoli's Gonzalo Higuain and Man City forward Edin Dzeko this summer, and it would seem that Wenger is getting more and more desperate to add competition to his current striking ranks before the window closes on September 2.

NORWICH LEADING CHASE FOR LAMBERT

The Daily Mirror claims that Norwich are leading the race to sign Liverpool striker Rickie Lambert.

West Brom, Bournemouth and Aston Villa have all shown an interest in the former England hitman, but it would seem that Canaries chief Alex Neil has stolen a march on his rivals.

Norwich are believed to be ready to offer a fee of around £3million for 33-year-old, who looks certain to leave Anfield ahead of Christian Benteke's switch to Merseyside from Villa.

Neil certainly has a number of attacking options at his disposal but Lambert is a proven goalscorer at Premier League level, despite his disappointing spell at Liverpool, and would be a shrewd addition for the Canaries.

Jordan Henderson: Takes over the Liverpool captaincy

Jordan Henderson: Takes over the Liverpool captaincy

Brendan Rodgers believes Jordan Henderson will "really blossom" as Liverpool captain and expects the midfielder to have an “outstanding year”.

Henderson has been handed the captain’s armband and has also inherited a key midfield role following Steven Gerrard’s departure for LA Galaxy.

However, Rodgers believes the England international will thrive with the additional responsibility of leading the Reds and will prove to be a worthy successor to Anfield legend Gerrard.

“When I was aware that Stevie was going I wanted to look at somebody who would be a great ambassador for Liverpool on and off the pitch," Rodgers said on LFCTV.

"You have a huge responsibility on a worldwide basis.

"Jordan was one I thought about and once I saw him grow and develop as vice-captain, I felt sure he could be a captain.

"I told him to do it his way and have his own ideas and I think he'll have an outstanding year and really blossom with the captaincy."
