Ade yang akan stay pukul 4 pagi nanti? :D

Liverpool will play Irish side Shamrock Rovers in a post-season friendly in Dublin three days after the final game of the Premier League season.

DUBLIN, REPUBLIC OF IRELAND - Saturday, August 10, 2013: Liverpool supporters sing 'You'll Never Walk Alone' before a preseason friendly match against Glasgow Celtic at the Aviva Stadium. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Liverpool say they will field a first team squad barring any injuries or selection for national team duty for the upcoming World Cup, meaning the likes of Gerrard, Suarez, Sterling, Henderson, Johnson won’t be involved.

The game will be played at 5.30pm on May 14th at the Aviva Stadium. The Reds were in Dublin last summer when they lost 1-0 to Celtic.

Liverpool’s Chief Commercial Officer, Billy Hogan said: “We are looking forward to coming back to Dublin again this year to play in front of our Irish fans. The Club enjoys incredible support in Ireland and we thank the Football Association Ireland for their support in staging the game. Our opponent, Shamrock Rovers, hold a special place for us as we bought Jim Beglin from them in 1983 who became Bob Paisley’s last-ever signing”.

Liverpool FC and the Hoops last met 32 years ago in a friendly at Milltown, Dublin. The final score was 1-1 with Ian Rush scoring for Liverpool.

“I played in the game against Shamrock Rovers over three decades ago and I remember scoring that goal. It’ll be great to play them again and this time take away a win rather than a draw” said Liverpool FC legend and ambassador, Ian Rush.

This will be a fixture not to be missed with Liverpool FC, one of Europe’s most historic and famous football clubs with 18 league titles, meeting Shamrock Rovers, the most successful team in the Republic of Ireland having won 17 league titles.

Shamrock Rovers chairman, Jonathan Roche said: “We are delighted to be taking on Liverpool in this high profile game at the Aviva Stadium. It will see two clubs with strong histories of success and great fans face each other in what should be an entertaining game of football and a great occasion. It will be a great game for our players to be involved in, and also a good day out for our fans and Irish supporters of Liverpool, many of whom are also SSE Airtricity League supporters.”

Tickets go on sale on Friday 28 March at 10am and can be purchased via www.ticketmaster.ie with prices ranging from €15 – €40.

We understand that Liverpool managing director Ian Ayre and chief scout Barry Hunter were in Rome on Tuesday evening to watch AS Roma defeat Torino 2-1.

We profile one player that The Reds might be monitoring, midfielder Miralem Pjanic.

As this season enters it’s final stages, preparations for the next one are already underway and football scouts throughout the world are working hard in quest for identifying the right players for their respective clubs.

Liverpool is no exception to that. However, next transfer window might carry a significant difference to previous four summer transfer windows should their last eight fixtures prove fruitful – Liverpool should qualify for Champions League and thus unlock the upper echelons of football talent.

As witnessed last season, the call of Champions League was enough to sway their primary targets off the course to Anfield and Brendan Rodgers and his players are currently exceeding expectations in order to bring five-time European champions back to football elite and prevent the unsuccessful transfer scenarios from repeating themselves.

Liverpool’s league form has done nothing to quell the speculation among fans with regards to future transfers. A few key areas of strengthening have been identified, though, with one of them being central midfield. While the variety of midfielders linked with Liverpool ranges from physical ball-winners to quick-thinking playmakers, it seems that a pattern emerges, not just when it comes to midfielders but to players in every position, a pattern that suggests that Brendan Rodgers is looking for hard-working, intelligent and strong-willed players, in addition to them possessing good technical ability. The latest name to fit that description is young Roma midfielder and Bosnian international Miralem Pjanic.

MIARLEM PJANIC

Date of birth: 2 April 1990 (age 23)

Place of birth: Zvornik, SFR Yugoslavia

Nationality: Bosnian

Height: 1.80 m (5 ft 11 in)

Position: Attacking midfielder

Primarily an attacking midfielder, Pjanic came through the ranks at FC Metz before making a move to Lyon, where he hadn’t progressed quite as quickly as those who have seen him at Metz expected of him, partly due to a foot injury and club’s inconsistent form in the period of time he spent there. However, his talent and attitude made it only a question of time before he was given a chance to impress in a better placed club and Roma was the club that believed in him the most, belief which he paid off handsomely with his performances.

Strengths

Pjanic’s technical ability is arguably his biggest quality. His impeccable ball control, precise passing and sublime, almost arrogant dribbling skills he employed to keep the ball at his feet or skip past opponent were met with approval even from one of the greatest masters of those trades, Francesco Totti himself.

One would argue that training alongside Totti and generally playing in the Italian league has broadened the scope of Pjanic’s skills (look at his stunning lob against Verona at Olimpico earlier this season and you can draw comparisons to Totti’s signature move, “cucchiaio” (spoon)). When he was at Metz, he was more of an all-action attacking midfielder than the elegant one he is today.

However, while he’s not relying on pace, he has kept the will to press high up the pitch and win the ball in opponent’s half, which undoubtedly suits the way Rodgers sets his team out. His vision of teammates’ and opponents’ positions and lightning-quick thinking also stand out from the first time you see him playing (he currently has twenty two assists in less than three seasons with Roma), as well as wonderful set-piece ability, especially free kicks.

Weaknesses

While it is hard to find a true flaw in Pjanic’s game, one would expect such a skilled offensive player to score more than he does. In that sense, he is more of Andres Iniesta or David Silva, where goals are a bonus to his creative play and usually a work of art, rather than Frank Lampard, where goals are the essence (Pjanic currently has eleven goals for Roma in all competitions). He can also be considered a temperamental player, accruing eighteen yellow and two red cards during his time at Roma, which is a bit unexpected from an attacking midfielder.

Conclusion

Miralem Pjanic is the kind of player who would probably fit into Liverpool’s first eleven, provided he gets quickly accustomed to pace of Premier League and lack of breathing space afforded by opponents. His tenacity in opponent’s half would work well in tandem with either Henderson or Allen pressing on in front of either Gerrard or Lucas, while he would offer genuine creativity and set-piece ability too.

Ball retention is another important aspect of his game, which would be a step in the direction of possession-based football Rodgers wants to take in long-term with his team. Also, the pace that Rodgers injected with Daniel Sturridge and Raheem Sterling would be well exploited by Pjanic’s clever through and diagonal balls.

As an aside, Pjanic’s game intelligence, passing and composure on the ball could see him occupying the deep lying playmaker role in the future and dictating the tempo of the game in the way Pirlo and Gerrard do so at the moment.

With only one year left on his contract and World Cup looming large, where he will feature with Bosnian national team, Pjanic will not be short of suitors Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester United and Arsenal all publicly linked with him.

Should Liverpool reach Champions League and should Rodgers decide to pursue him, Liverpool’s style of football and good working relationship with Roma could prove to be the key in his possible transfer to Anfield and Rodgers would have another future gem at his disposal, ready to be polished and shine as brightly as ever.

Brendan Rodgers has an unshakable belief in his own methods, writes Aaron Cutler.

MANCHESTER, ENGLAND - Sunday, March 16, 2014: Liverpool's manager Brendan Rodgers before the Premiership match against Manchester United at Old Trafford. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Football is a game of opinions. We all have them. Everyone from a board of directors down thinks they know best. The topic of conversation can vary but a lack of consensus is steadfast. Whether it financial prudence or the ratio of meat to pastry in a half time pie, we debate everything – a fact exasperated by modern media and the invention of online forums, podcasts and twitter.

The appointment of Brendan Rodgers was no different. His unveiling was met with a curious mix of emotions. Delight, anger, suspicion, denial – you name it, disunity raged as fans moped in a post Hicks/Gillet hangover. It is only now, 18 months into a bright new dawn that supporters are beginning to unite once more. The irony in that of course is Rodgers has become the band aid. Moreover, he has assumed that role by discarding almost all opinions. Indeed by sticking to his own principles he has transformed Liverpool from mid-table no-hopers to title challengers. Stubbornness prevailed.

Loaning/Selling Andy Carroll

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Friday, January 6, 2012: Liverpool's Andy Carroll celebrates scoring his side's fourth goal against Oldham Athletic during the FA Cup 3rd Round match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

On succeeding Kenny Dalglish Rodgers talked at great length about his footballing principles. Never too far from a microphone he preached death by football, the possession game, tiki-taka, you name it. Some bought into such anecdotes; others belittled them as cheap soundbites. Nevertheless the manager was true to his vision, installing a pass-and-move mantra which marginalised certain personnel. Cue his first major call.

Andy Carroll ultimately failed to justify his enormous price tag but did hint at a revival towards the end of Dalglish’s tenure. An FA Cup cameo almost wrestled the trophy from Chelsea, while an impressive Euro 2012 had fans believing he was set to catch fire at Anfield. Rodgers had other ideas. Tall, cumbersome and erratic in possession his laboured nature was never going to fit into a progressive 4-4-3. Compare his movement to that of Suarez, Sturrdige and Sterling today and the chasm is frightening. Even so it takes a brave man to sanction the departure of a club record signing following just one full season. In the face of widespread intrigue if not opposition, Brendan ushered the striker out of L4.

Introducing Youngsters

LONDON, ENGLAND - Sunday, December 15, 2013: Liverpool's Raheem Sterling celebrates scoring the fifth goal against Tottenham Hotspur during the Premiership match at White Hart Lane. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Carroll was accompanied by Charlie Adam, Dirk Kuyt, Maxi Rodriguez, Craig Bellamy and Alberto Aquilani. These transfers differed in reasons but the fact is Liverpool lost a great deal of experience as Rodgers plumped for youth in that early period. Within the first three months of the season Raheem Sterling, Andre Wisdom, Suso, Jon Flanagan, Adam Morgan, Conor Coady and Jerome Sinclair all featured. Though nobody objected to youngsters being given a shot some did question the regularity of such involvement. Determined to promote from within Rodgers persisted. Of course not all have blossomed into first team regulars but his unique style of coaching has improved certain individuals beyond recognition.

Sterling has weathered a dip in form to emerge as a key attacking player. His potential was evident but not the tactical awareness, upper body strength, movement and work rate we see now. Rodgers has honed his skills masterfully. Likewise Jon Flanagan has developed from a hard tackling defender into a ball playing full-back, a seeming no-hoper to first team regular. Jordan Henderson meanwhile has matured into the most consistent English midfielder in the Premier League. All three were written off by a huge proportion of the Twitterati but have kicked on because of their manager. He persisted; never abandoning his methods.

Game Plans

Formations were a big sticking point of Rodgers first season at the helm. No Plan B was the accusation levelled at him by hordes of supporters, myself included. But over time he has introduced new tactics, silencing those who labelled him a one trick pony. Not only that, our style of play has altered accordingly.

This season alone we have adopted 4-4-3, 3-5-2, 4-1-3-1, 4-2-2-2, 4-4-2 .. combinations aplenty. Look at the manner of victories also. We ground wins out at the beginning of the season, fending off Villa and United. We bedazzled the likes of Fulham and Norwich at home with some quite exquisite attacking play. We counter-attacked Everton and Arsenal into submission. We controlled proceedings at Old Trafford in a manner befitting of a Benitez away-day. No Plan B? Our manager has more ideas than Djibril Cisse has haircuts. Right now he is probably the most versatile coach in the land, disproving even his harshest critics.

Reina/Mignolet

And what of the goalkeeping situation? Pepe Reina was, without doubt, one our most popular players of the modern era. He was however a shadow of his former self and if not an accident waiting to happen, certainly error prone. In spite of this and a very public flirtation with Barcelona many fans were up in arms at his exit last summer. Rodgers was unapologetic.

He set-about luring Simon Mignolet as soon as the window opened and with next to no regard for Reina’s eventual destination. Yes, the Belgian is far from perfect, suffering his own crisis of confidence around Christmas time but can anyone deny we have upgraded on Reina? Or more specifically, the Reina of 2011 onwards?

Mignolet has already made more saves (87) than Reina did in the whole of 2012/13 (73), he makes less individual errors and has proven invaluable at key moments – think Stoke’s 90th minute penalty, Benteke’s late strike at Villa Park, Everton’s peppering of our goal at Goodison, Rooney’s drive at 1-0 two weeks ago. A fantastic shot stopper he has vindicated his manager’s brave call.

Defensive Midfield

Moving onto midfield and our failure to land what video gamers term a DM. I say failure it was in fact a refusal to identify and sign that big, combative, Man Mountain we all conjured up in our minds. Summer rolled into winter with the cries growing louder – sign Schnederlin, Wanyama, M’Vila … Brendan seemed to scoff at the suggestion. And lo and behold, three months down the line those calls have subsided. Why? Because Liverpool play a style that renders the role redundant.

We have won midfield battles with Arsenal, United and Everton without such a figure. Indeed Steven Gerrard has filled the position brilliantly but he’s hardly been crashing into opponents or swatting them away with brute strength. Even with Lucas in the side (a more traditional defensive midfielder) we have outfootballed teams as opposed to snuffing them out centrally. White Hart Lane was a prime example of that, our pressing game superb, our possession game even better. We followed that up with a terrific display at Eastland’s, a ground where all comers had been destroyed (United and Arsenal included). Despite losing the game we in no way lost the midfield battle.

To play in this Liverpool midfield you need to be a damn good footballer. A tough tackling import built like Dwayne Johnson will not suffice. Once again, Brendan won the argument.

The re-invention of Gerrard

LONDON, ENGLAND - Wednesday, February 12, 2014: Liverpool's captain Steven Gerrard celebrates scoring the third goal against Fulham from the penalty spot during the Premiership match at Craven Cottage. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Not to forget Gerrard himself. Quite possibly the greatest red of them all, just how Rodgers managed Steven’s swansong divided fans. A sizable percentage wanted him deployed further forward, using what legs he still possessed to influence matters in the final third. Others felt he could ‘do a job’ on the right flank, some even suggested he slot back into defence and become a ball playing centre back. Finally there were sections who questioned his very presence in the side, believing the totemic figure was merely stunting his team’s overall growth. Few though pictured him in that deep lying role.

In a recent interview with Jamie Carragher Rodgers revealed it was always his intention to deploy Gerrard where he has started the last 12 games. He had a plan you see, one that involved no referral to social media. If it had Gerrard may have been hung and quartered following one tryout, lambasted by legions following a modest but in no way poor showing at Stoke. Two games later he was bossing proceedings in a Merseyside Derby, as he did at Old Trafford recently. Between them manager and captain may have prolonged Gerrard’s career for two to three years.

The Pirlo comparisons have been forthcoming and they are not without substance. Gerrard is so good he can master any position given time. Rodgers knew that, his critics didn’t.

And so we sit second with eight cup finals to play. A great many people deserve credit for this improbable turnaround, not least psychologist Steve Peters whose impact cannot be measured by goal difference or pass completion stats. It is Rodgers though who has spearheaded our revival, a stirring fight back ahead of schedule.

He will never please everybody but you doubt that worries him. He is after all his own man with an unshakable belief in his own ability. Stubbornness can prove a manager’s downfall but with Rodgers you feel it is his biggest strength. And you know what? That single-mindedness might just win us the league. Few will question him then.

Silencing his critics: How Brendan Rodgers stuck to his guns to revive Liverpool

Unknown   at  18:35  No comments

Brendan Rodgers has an unshakable belief in his own methods, writes Aaron Cutler.

Swagger. The word maybe means slightly different things to different people. For me, swagger on the football pitch is when a player or team is supremely confident in everything they do. Self-belief is total. There is no fear and no doubts. The players express themselves. No matter whom the opposition is or what the situation is. For me, a key sign of a real quality side is when this swagger is shown away from home.

I grew up watching Liverpool exhibit this swagger routinely. My first memory of being a Liverpool fan is watching the reds on TV during the 87/88 season. I remember we’d just brush teams aside, seemingly with ease. We were better than the opposition, we knew it, and they knew it. Gradually though this disappeared. The declined became apparent after Kenny resigned in 1991 and we started getting results that were a real shock to the system. 3-1 defeat away to Luton. 3-1 beating at QPR, 4-2 loss at Stamford Bridge. I followed all of these results on teletext, thinking there must be some kind of mistake. My team didn’t take beatings like this. The last away game that season, away to Nottingham Forest, live on ITV. We got stuffed 2-1 and it could have been worse. We lost the title. We also lost our swagger and I don’t think we’ve regained it until this season.

Don’t get me wrong we have had success between February 1991 and this season. Cup wins, European success. We had some great results like beating Real Madrid 4-0 and a very good Manchester United team 4-1 at Old Trafford. These successes showed some excellent tactical play, great defending and ruthless finishing. But I always thought something was missing. Even in seasons 2005-06 and 2008-09 where we put some excellent results together, and challenged for a title, we didn’t have that swagger. Not in my opinion. I don’t remember Liverpool playing teams off the park away from home in either of these seasons. I remember the team winning with efficiency and control or doing a job and beating teams on the counter attack.

In the early Premier League era, United of course showed the swagger. They murdered sides and always just looked far superior to everyone else. I fucking hated them, more so back then than I do now so I didn’t really appreciate their swagger. Cantona was probably the epitome of swagger but again I couldn’t stand him so didn’t appreciate it. I was a fan of any team that looked like they could beat United to the title. Hoping they’d win every game with the exception of games against us just so that United would win fuck all. As we know this didn’t happen often. Aston Villa challenged briefly one year but was never really serious. Blackburn was a functional side. Newcastle did have the swagger at times but were fragile mentally. It wasn’t until Arsene Wenger went to Arsenal where I saw a team that wasn’t Man United play with true swagger. When Arsenal and United were going for the title, I’d watch Arsenal matches willing them to win as if I was a goner – thoroughly impressed with their swagger. They’d beat good teams away from home with ease. I remember them beating Leeds 4-0 at Elland Rd when Leeds were a good side. Most impressive was them going to Old Trafford and playing United off the park. They did that often between 1998 and 2004. I was well jealous. We’d won a few games at Old Trafford but they were 1-0 jobs. Score from a set piece and defend for our lives. Arsenal were dominating possession and carving United apart on their pitch. I’ve often wondered if we would get that again from Liverpool.

Everyone has their own preferences about what enjoy the most from football. I’ve always liked pretty football – passing, dribbling, skill. Think Brazil 1982, Liverpool 87-88, Arsenal 98-04, Barca under Pep.

When Brendan Rodgers was first appointed and began speaking about his philosophies I got quite excited. I’d read several articles on tiki taka, pressing, 4-3-3 formation etc and thought we could be in for something special. But then after a few months – say around November 2012. I started to think Brendan was all talk. There was no pressing, no penetration and we were easy to beat. I felt as if I had been charmed by his bull shit. But since January 2013 we’ve been a good side. An since 7th December 203 – for me – we’ve taken it to the next level and now play with a real swagger.

West Ham were brushed aside. We then played Spurs off the park at White Hart Lane – a stadium where we’ve had a poor run in recent years. We could have easily run up a Rugby score. The next game was against Cardiff and it’s this performance that convinced me we were capable of some breath taking football. For the first 60 minutes we played the best football I’ve seen from a Liverpool side since 1988. That vein of form has continued for the most part. We lost to Chelsea and City but played well. We dropped points against West Brom and before that Aston Villa but bounced straight back. We’ve now won 6 straight for the first time in 8 years, scoring 24 goals. Incredible.

The team impresses me on so many levels. When they go a goal down or concede an equaliser they don’t panic. The fans get anxious but the players don’t. They just confidently play their football, probing, passing, creating. There is no fear. Against Arsenal in the Cup we were in a situation where we are losing away to the league leaders. Their fans are well up for it. The atmosphere is hot. In the past we’d find such a situation extremely difficult. But this time we were still confident, passed the ball, worked openings, created clear chances. Missed chances, came again with the patient probing. Got robbed by Howard Webb. Came again with the good football. We lost but I was very impressed with the performance.

In the build up to the United game I was reading all the comments from fans on forums, twitter etc. Most people were saying that this would be a very difficult game. That they will be up for it. Their crowd would be up for it. Rooney was back in form etc. One of my best mates said he was worried we’d get a hiding. Seriously.

I wondered what Manchester United everyone had been watching all season because the one I had watched were shite. Apparently though the form book would go out the window. Bollocks would it. I had predicted, seriously and sensibly predicted, a 4-1 win to us. The only thing I wasn’t sure about was if United would get the 1 goal or not. I had a lot of people on twitter telling me to be serious because that’s not the way it works. What the fuck do you mean that’s not the way it works. United are shit. We’re mustard. We’ll win by a big score. Too simple a concept I suppose. Only it wasn’t.

We took the field at Old Trafford believing we were the superior side. The players didn’t get caught up in the rivalry. They just did their jobs. The pressing, harrying, remaining positionally disciplined off the ball. When they got the ball, they kept it, worked the angles, remained patient, slowly created chances. United could not get near us. The player who epitomised our swag was Sturridge. He’d get the ball, hold it up, dribble with it for a bit, looking up all the while, teasing the nearest defender to come and challenge for it. While he’s doing this I’m worried he will lose possession and we then get hit on the counter. Daniel isn’t worried one iota though. He’s waiting for the best passing option and if it isn’t there he’ll keep it. Eventually he’ll pass it off to a team mate. Get it back and do the same thing again. It’s wonderful and calms everyone down especially when we’re winning and the opposition want to work up a head of steam.

Gerrard takes a penalty under extreme pressure and says. I’ll just slot this in the top corner and strut back to the centre circle because that is what I do. Swag.

I watched the entire game while standing in my living room. Shouting at the telly. As if I was Brendan. (My 3 year old daughter found this very amusing and joined in). Even though we were far superior, I’m always worried when we play United. Such is my dislike for them. I want perfection. I wanted 7-0. I thought Suarez and Sturridge had ordinary games. The amount of counter attacking opportunities we had was frightening. We bungled most of them. I reckon had SAS been on their ‘A’ game we’d have scored 8.

8-0 or 3-0 though United were spanked good and proper. I felt like King Leonidas after his first battle with the Persians. I could have easily let out a roar! The opposition destroyed. Fuck off.

I didn’t watch the game against Cardiff live. I followed the score on twitter and then watched it on Match First on Sky. As I was writing this blog Trevor Francis says “Liverpool playing with a real swagger now” he was absolutely right. This was a game we had gone behind in twice. Both times we shrugged our shoulders and got back into the game with lovely football. Our first goal came from a move that included about 30 passes. It was a beautifully worked goal and summed up where we are at the moment. The 2nd half was a piss take. Sturridge was chief piss taker. That back heel to Suarez took liberties, it really did. Henderson’s reaction to the back heel and goal is brilliant. Jumping up and down like a kid. By the time the ref blew the final whistle we had run up a Tennis score.

I think our away kit next season should be the 1982 Brazil kit. Tight blue shorts n’all. The travelling Kop should bring samba drums to the stadium. We are playing like a vintage Brazil side where nobody gives a shit about the defending. It’s all about attacking football and playing with no fear.

The other day I watched England play Denmark with 5 Liverpool players in the side. I thought even England had a bit of swag. All of the experts and pundits were saying England played poorly but I thought they did well. It was like watching Liverpool play but without caring about the result.

So, 8 games left now and 5 of them at Anfield. Sunderland next up. We should give them a good beating shouldn’t we? The manager and players shouldn’t get complacent but such is our swag I’m already adding on the 3 points when I look at the league table. I think maybe some rotation is in order for this game. I’d bring in Sakho for Agger. Sterling has to start in this one, probably in place of Allen. My side then: Mignolet; Johnson, Skrtle, Sakho, Flanno; Gerrard, Hendo, Coutinho; Sterling, Suarez, Sturridge.

I’m a bit worried about Gerrard being close to getting a 2 game ban. 1 more yellow between now and 13th April and we lose him for 2 games. I think the best time to get the yellow is against Sunderland. He’d miss Spurs at home and West Ham away it isn’t ideal but I think we could still get 6 points without him. We’d need him for City at Anfield I think so a tactical booking towards the end of the game might be in order for Stevie.

I think we’ll slaughter Sunderland. With Wes Brown and John O’Shea at the back for them we’ll win 7-0.

In the last blog I said we needed to improve the away form to have a chance of the title. Well since then we have won just the 4 away games on the spin scoring 15 goals.

As I write this City haven’t yet played United. We need the enemy to do us a favour because if City fail to win, the title would be in our hands. Imagine that.

*Edit* United 0-3 City. Oh well, hopefully Arsenal can hold City to a point next weekend.
