Ste Speed recalls one of Liverpool’s most charismatic players, Emlyn Hughes, who passed away 10 years ago today.
November 9, 2014 marks the tenth anniversary of the death of former Liverpool captain Emlyn Hughes. I remember exactly where I was when I heard the news. I was in a small seaside town called Southport. No not that one, I was in the lesser known version on the Gold Coast of Australia. Back then I had no smart phone and my internet access was rare, so I didn’t know how serious his illness was.
The sad news of his passing came as a great shock and affected me deeply when I found out. Steven Gerrard was quoted at the time as saying that Liverpool had lost one of its greatest sons and I couldn’t have agreed more. I remember thinking in the aftermath of Istanbul that I wished Emlyn could have lived just a few more months so he could have seen his beloved Liverpool back where they belonged, as European Champions.
For people of my age who grew up in the 1980s, Emlyn Hughes was the guy with the infectious smile, wearing patterned jumpers and hamming it up with Princess Anne on ‘A Question of Sport’. For Liverpool fans of the generation before me, the man known as Crazy Horse is regarded as a true legend and one of the greatest players in the history of the club.
When he first signed for The Reds in February 1967, Bill Shankly was driving him to Liverpool for the first time. They were stopped by the police and Shankly said: “Don’t you know who I’ve got in this car? The captain of England!” Shankly later described Emlyn as “having everything” as a player. Shankly adored Emlyn and the feeling was very much reciprocated.
He certainly wasn’t everybody’s cup of tea though, especially Tommy Smith’s. Their legendary feud went back to when Emlyn was made captain at Smith’s expense. He certainly didn’t help his cause with Smith when he grabbed the microphone during the post European Cup final celebrations in 1977. Emlyn proceeded to sing ‘Liverpool are magic, Everton are tragic’. Smith has since said he believed this caused bad blood with the Everton fans and spoilt the attendance at his testimonial shortly afterwards.
Tommy Smith may have found Emlyn to be big headed and arrogant but I have heard many stories from fans that portray him in an entirely different light. It is well known that when kids would knock at his door, Emlyn would happily chat with them and sign an autograph. I’ve heard he would even invite them in for a cup of tea as well if it was raining.
My friend Jimmy recently told me that when he was 11, he and his mate hitchhiked to see Liverpool play at Burnley. After the match they stuck around and had no idea how to get home. Emlyn saw them and brought them onto the coach with the players. The driver demanded they get off and refused to drive with them on board. Emlyn got into a row with the driver, but he refused to budge and the lads had to get off. Jimmy says he will never forget how he stuck up for them and tried to help out.
Regardless of what some people may have thought of his personality, it can never be disputed that Emlyn was an amazing footballer who played a vital part as captain of the club during one of the most successful periods in its history. He was the first Liverpool captain to lift the European Cup and did it again a year later. He also played a part in arguably the finest defence in Liverpool’s history, when they conceded just 16 goals in 1978/79.
As a player he was all-action, getting stuck in, as well as bringing the ball out into the midfield and making himself available all over the pitch. He had a shot like a cannon and scored some incredible long range goals. He was voted Footballer of the Year in 1977 when he led Liverpool to the league title, European Cup and a defeat in the FA Cup final where they were denied the first ever treble.
Although I never had the pleasure of meeting Emlyn, I always had a lot of time for him and thought he came across on TV as a very likeable fella. I was too young to remember him playing but I have seen lots of footage on videos and DVDs. I appreciate how he was an emotional player who really appeared to feel everything so deeply.
It is impossible not to smile at his joyous reaction in the footage of celebrations after famous victories. For example his fist pumping and cry of “yes” after the title winning game at Wolves in 1976. When he lifted the European Cup in 1977, the BBC commentator, Barry Davies, described the moment as “the smile of the season from Emlyn Hughes, the performance of the season, the trophy of the season”.
I also love watching the footage of his celebration’s after scoring those two goals against Everton. The way he ran around like a man possessed waving his arms over his head is an iconic image of a golden era for Liverpool FC.
Emlyn Hughes, Crazy Horse, gone but will never be forgotten.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers was disappointed his side were not given what he described as a "clear penalty" in their 2-1 Barclays Premier League defeat against Chelsea at Anfield.
The Reds took a ninth-minute lead through Emre Can's deflected effort before Gary Cahill levelled five minutes later. Diego Costa's 67th-minute strike sealed victory as the Spain international scored his 10th goal in just his 12th game for the Blues.
However it was the non-award of the penalty by referee Anthony Taylor which was the main talking point, after a shot from Steven Gerrard hit the arm of Cahill in the area late on.
"It was a clear one," Rodgers told BT Sport 1.
"We worked so hard in the game, we need those decisions. It was quite obvious, it hits his hand, it was a clear clear penalty and the referee has a clear view of it. The players gave everything and we deserved at least a point."
It was Liverpool's fifth league defeat of the season and Rodgers, who has now not beaten Chelsea in eight attempts, is hoping the return of Daniel Sturridge will be the catalyst to kick-start their season.
"We have got to keep working hard," Rodgers added. "We are hoping Daniel will be back after the international break.
"We understand the frustrations (of the fans), the players, myself and the staff, we have a lot of work to do."

Liverpool lost 2-1 to title favourites Chelsea on Saturday lunchtime, as Brendan Rodgers‘ side’s poor run of results continues. Henry Jackson assesses each Reds player on the day.
SIMON MIGNOLET (out of 10)- 6
The Belgian once again had good and bad points to his game, making some fine saves but also looking shaky with the ball at his feet. Still not good enough, and the Reds must find a better goalkeeper.
Vote Mignolet as your Man of the Match on Twitter:
GLEN JOHNSON- 6
The 30-year-old made a couple of good blocks to deny Eden Hazard in the first-half, and dealt fairly well with the Belgian star. He still frustrated at times though, and it remains baffling as to why Javier Manquillo isn’t retaining his place week in, week out.
Vote Johnson as your Man of the Match on Twitter:
The Slovakian had a solid afternoon, and had a very tough 90 minutes against the physical Diego Costa. There will always be an erratic nature to Liverpool’s defending as long as he’s in the side though.
Vote Skrtel as your Man of the Match on Twitter:
DEJAN LOVREN- 5.5
Lovren did little to justify his selection ahead of the unlucky Kolo Toure, looking nervous on the ball and lacking leadership throughout. Surely the most disappointing of Brendan Rodgers’ signings this summer.
Vote Lovren as your Man of the Match on Twitter:
ALBERTO MORENO- 6
The 22-year-old struggled at times defensively, and must stop taking risks in dangerous areas of the pitch. He got forward well when he had the opportunity to.
Vote Moreno as your Man of the Match on Twitter:
The skipper didn’t manage to stamp his authority on proceedings at any point, barring the odd trademark raking pass, and his lack of pace was an issue when Chelsea’s attacking players ran at him.
Vote Gerrard as your Man of the Match on Twitter:
EMRE CAN- 7
The young German was impressive, scoring the opening goal via a deflection, and bringing dynamism to the midfield. He was one of Liverpool’s standout players before tiring after the break.
Vote Can as your Man of the Match on Twitter:
JORDAN HENDERSON- 5.5
The 24-year-old was not at his best, and hasn’t been for a few weeks now. His passing was particularly erratic. His effort could not be questioned at any point though.
Vote Henderson as your Man of the Match on Twitter:
Coutinho always looked the Reds’ brightest attacking spark, showing quick feet, creativity and a good work-rate from start to finish. Strange decision by Rodgers to substitute him in the second-half.
Vote Coutinho as your Man of the Match on Twitter:
The 19-year-old looks a little jaded at the moment, and is far from his best. He always looked a threat when he had the ball out wide though.
Vote Sterling as your Man of the Match on Twitter:
MARIO BALOTELLI- 6.5
The much-maligned Italian did plenty of good, but more is still needed from him. He held the ball up well, worked hard and showed more movement that of late, but he lost the ball cheaply a number of times.
Vote Balotelli as your Man of the Match on Twitter:
Substitutes
FABIO BORINI (on for Coutinho 69)- 6
The 23-year-old headed over late on, but was otherwise kept quiet by Chelsea’s excellent defence.
Vote Borini as your Man of the Match on Twitter:
JOE ALLEN (on for Can 69)- 6.5
The Welshman did pretty well when he came, adding some midfield running from deep.
Vote Allen as your Man of the Match on Twitter:
RICKIE LAMBERT (on for Balotelli 79)- n/a
The former Southampton man was unnoticed.

Liverpool slumped to their third defeat in a week at Anfield on Saturday lunchtime, with the same personnel and issues continuing to plague the Reds, who looked vulnerable defensively throughout.
Brendan Rodgers didn’t receive the vindication he looked for in his decision to recall the Reds’ ‘first choice’ players for the game, as his side once again reverted to the cluelessness in defence that was given a night off in midweek.
The high tempo and pressing Liverpool returned for a spell at least, and the Reds looked marginally more threatening going forwards than they have in recent games as Emre Can handed Liverpool the lead, but the uncertainty at the back from familiar faces once again proved the home sides undoing as they shipped goals from Gary Cahill and Diego Costa courtesy of some woeful defending.
Here’s a round up of fans’ reactions and talking points from the match:
There was frustration that the ‘first choice’ players reselected continued to disappoint, in particular Dejan Lovren and Glen Johnson:
After making changes that completely backfired, the Liverpool boss now finds himself under increasing pressure at Anfield.

Liverpool succumbed to a 2-1 defeat to Chelsea at Anfield, despite Emre Can‘s early goal giving them the lead. Diego Costa’s second-half effort proved to be the winner.
Liverpool 1-2 Chelsea
Premier League / Anfield / Saturday, 8th November 2014
Goals: Can (9); Cahill (14), Costa (67)
Brendan Rodgers rather contradicted his claims on Tuesday that he picked his side against Real Madrid on form, making seven changes from the team that performed so admirably at Santiago Bernabeu.
Simon Mignolet, Martin Skrtel, Alberto Moreno and Emre Can were the only players to keep their place, with Glen Johnson, Dejan Lovren, Steven Gerrard, Jordan Henderson, Philippe Coutinho, Raheem Sterling and Mario Balotelli all returning. Toure could think himself particularly unlucky.
Can’s shot after just 30 seconds looped just wide of Thibaut Courtois’ goal, and Liverpool’s start to proceedings was quicker and more dynamic than of late.
After eight minutes the Reds were in the lead, and it was Can who scored. The 20-year-old’s long-range effort took a heavy deflection of Gary Cahill, and the ball flew past Courtois. It was a dream start for the hosts.
Chelsea were level five minutes later, however. Mignolet made a superb save from John Terry’s header from a corner, but the Belgian just took Cahill’s rebound over the line. Once again Rodgers’ men had come unstuck at a set-piece.
Balotelli had a goal correctly disallowed for offside and Cahill almost handled from Sterling’s shot. It had been a breathless opening 20 minutes.
An excellent run and shot by Coutinho tested Courtois after 25 minutes, but Chelsea continued to threaten aerially at the other end. Johnson made two important blocks to deny Eden Hazard.
The Reds had a poor spell of play when they simply couldn’t clear the ball, much to the frustration to the home faithful, and Jose Mourinho’s league leaders started to take a stranglehold on the game.
The half-time whistle came at a good time for Liverpool, and after a terrific start they had lost their way somewhat.
There were no changes for either side at the interval, as Liverpool tried to give their season some much-needed momentum.
Diego Costa’s acrobatic effort flew over the bar, Sterling forced Courtois into a fine save and Gerrard made an excellent block to thwart Hazard, as the second-half got off to a flier. Chelsea looked the more likely to take the lead though.
On the hour mark the match was very finely poised, but Rodgers’ men were really struggling to break down Chelsea’s excellent defence. The game grew heated, and it’s clear to see there is still plenty of hatred between the two sides.
Midway through the second-half Chelsea were ahead, and it had been coming. Cesar Azpilicueta’s cross was palmed out by Mignolet, and Costa buried the rebound ruthlessly. Liverpool had it all to do with a quarter of the game remaining.
Henderson’s volley in the 75th minute almost diverted off Matic, but it was the only genuinely good chance they managed to muster despite an improvement in the final 15 minutes. Cahill blatantly hand-balled in the area with four minutes left, but referee Anthony Taylor waved away Liverpool’s protests.
The final whistle blew, and Rodgers and his side had to accept they had been second-best for much of the afternoon. Their frustrating season continues.
Man of the Match: Philippe Coutinho
Tactical Overview
Rodgers lined up with a 4-3-3 formation. Can and Henderson played ahead of Gerrard in midfield, while Coutinho and Sterling supported Balotelli on the right and right, respectively.
Gerrard’s lack of pace was an issue, however, Balotelli was again too isolated for large periods of the game. The Reds’ season continues to lack a spark.
Liverpool: Mignolet, Johnson, Skrtel, Lovren, Moreno, Gerrard, Can (Allen 69), Henderson, Coutinho (Borini 69), Sterling, Balotelli (Lambert 79).
Subs not used: Jones, Toure, Lucas, Lallana.
Chelsea starting XI: Courtois, Ivanovic, Cahill, Terry, Azpilicueta, Matic, Fabregas, Ramires, Oscar, Hazard, Costa

Liverpool 1-2 Chelsea: Off Form Reds Beaten By League Leaders

Brendan Rodgers has rued injuries, but defeat to Chelsea shows Liverpool have problems that Daniel Sturridge can't solve, writes Daniel Storey.
"You have to be bold enough to make the decisions as a manager and that is why you are paid the money you are. If you make more wrong ones than right ones you will be out of work, it's as simple as that."
Brendan Rodgers has a habit of providing newsworthy copy, but this midweek comment might be more meaningful than most. For all Liverpool's exploits last season, managers will always be judged on their reactions and response when the chips are down. That's just the way it is.
Right now, Rodgers is enduring his most difficult spell as Liverpool manager. His side started brightly and took the lead against Chelsea but again looked weak in defence and blunt up front. Having put all of his eggs in a Chelsea-shaped basket with his Real Madrid team selection, did Rodgers drop them all on the floor?
"We knew we had a real tough game tonight, but I didn't rest players for Saturday," said Rodgers on Tuesday evening. "I picked what I thought could get the result for us tonight, and I think the performance showed that. I don't think any other players I could have put in tonight could have put in the performance we put in."
Liverpool's team selection against Real Madrid in midweek (left) and Chelsea (right) on Saturday
A selection has rarely been so anticipated. Having offered such profuse praise to those that came into the side on Tuesday, would Rodgers keep faith in them? Would Mario Balotelli be given another chance? Would £20million Dejan Lovren, coincidentally on the cover of the matchday programme, regain his place?
As it turned out, there were seven changes in all for Liverpool, with Balotelli, Lovren, Steven Gerrard, Jordan Henderson, Raheem Sterling, Glen Johnson and Philippe Coutinho all returning to the starting side. So much for not having rested players on Tuesday - there was just one alteration to the team that lost to Newcastle last week.
Rodgers claimed that midweek criticism did a "disservice" to the players who were "absolutely magnificent" against Real. But there is a flip side of that argument. Does it not do a similar disservice to those who performed so magnificently to be left out after that display, especially given Liverpool's recent form?
Take Kolo Toure, for example, impressive beyond all expectation against the Champions League winners.
The same goes for Lucas Leiva, who has been out in the cold and yet stepped up to the big occasion. And what of Fabio Borini, who contributed more on Tuesday that Balotelli has all season in the Premier League? Javier Manquillo might also be wondering why Glen Johnson merit selection ahead of him for such a fixture.
One thing Rodgers' selection did do is pile the pressure upon the result of the match, but it also must have risked lowering the morale of those players cast aside after one match. Will they have the same motivation to impress next time?
Given the circumstances, Liverpool and Rodgers needed a fast start to lift morale, and it came via that most beautiful of women, Lady Luck.
Emre Can surged forward before hitting a powerful drive from 25 yards. It may well have been on target, but took a deflection of the back of Gary Cahill, wrong-footing Thibaut Courtois.
Failed
If that goal should have settled Liverpool down, it failed to do so. Instead, we began to see the advantage of Jose Mourinho's high press plan. With Eden Hazard and Diego Costa both blocking the opportunities for Simon Mignolet to roll the ball out, Chelsea forced the goalkeeper into kicking long, whilst Gerrard, Alberto Moreno, Henderson and Can were harried whenever they received the ball.
The first three of those four gave the ball away 12 times in the first half alone, each time potentially leaving their side susceptible to the counter attack. Against Chelsea, that will eventually cost you.
However, if giving the ball away was a potential Achilles' heel for the home side, their inability to defend set pieces is now entrenched.
Cesc Fabregas' corner found the head of Costa, acting as an assist for John Terry. Mignolet, much-maligned of late, made a wonderful diving stop, but again Liverpool's marking remained non-existent.
Matic's ball found Gary Cahill, who drilled the ball at goal. Four different Chelsea players had won individual battles to the ball in succession. It was damning for the home team.
Chelsea's second goal gave Rodgers another opportunity to impress. The first battle had been lost, but a microcosm had been created in which the visitors effectively asked the question: 'What have you got?'
Unfortunately for Liverpool, the answer was not encouraging for Reds supporters.
Liverpool failed to ask enough questions of Chelsea, particularly in the second half
Liverpool had one shot on target throughout the entire second half. They huffed and puffed but were kept at arm's length. Chelsea were guilty of allowing their opposition onto them.
However, unlike against Manchester City and Manchester United, the opposition simply didn't have the firepower to threaten.
Rickie Lambert, Joe Allen and Fabio Borini were the three substitutes introduced. That's £31m of purchases, but ones that did not offer enough to suggest they had the game-changing qualities that a top side must have from the bench. It's easy to see why supporters were unenthused by their introduction.
"We deserved at least a point for sure," began Rodgers in his post-match press conference, an identical opening to the one against Real Madrid.
"We have to keep working hard and hope get some of our injured players back in. There is no magic formula but I have a brilliant group of players here. We will be ready and firing after the international break."
And yet, it is worth considering that the only players that Rodgers has injured are Daniel Sturridge and Mamadou Sakho. Can this form really be explained by the loss of one striker? How good is Sturridge at defending corners? Shouldn't they be firing now?
The principal conclusion to draw is that last season Liverpool finished two points ahead of Chelsea, but they are already 15 points behind after 11 games.
Rodgers' side have already dropped 63 per cent of the points that they did in the whole of 2013/14. The fear is that after a period of progression, Liverpool now find themselves going in the other direction.

Brendan Rodgers was left distinctly unimpressed after referee Anthony Taylor failed to award what the Liverpool manager thought was ‘a clear handball’ in the 2-1 defeat to Chelsea.
Emre Can’s first goal since his summer move from Bayer Leverkusen put Liverpool in front, before Gary Cahill’s equaliser and Diego Costa’s 10th league goal of the season clinched victory for Chelsea.
But Rodgers was lefty fuming by Taylor’s decision not to point to the spot late on when Steven Gerrad’s shot appeared to strike the arm of Chelsea defender Cahill.
"The technology coming into the game has been great: sometimes it goes for you, sometimes it works against you," he said.
"It is bitterly disappointing for us that there was a big decision in a big game that we didn't get.
"It was a clear handball - and you need to get that. If we weren't going to get it (a goal) from open play we should have got it from the penalty spot.
"The referee had a clear look at it but he maybe needed some help from his linesman."
The result means Liverpool have lost three games in the space of a week after the Tuesday’s loss to Real Madrid and last weekend’s defeat at Newcastle.
Rodgers made seven changes for the game against Los Blancos at the Bernabeu but the Liverpool boss has no regrets about his team selection for the last two matches.
"I would hopefully win the three games," he said when asked what he would do differently.
"We plan and prepare the team the best we can so I wouldn't do anything different, we just didn't get the results.
"Hopefully this will be an experience for us this week and we can use that to be better going forward."
