Essential work has continued on the redevelopment of the Main Stand at Anfield with the assembly of the first piece of the new supporting truss.

Liverpool announced the plan to undertake work on the stand in December 2014, with an extra 8,500 seats due to be added.

The changes will take the capacity in the stand to over 20,000, increasing the overall capacity of Anfield to around 54,000.

Work began on January 5 and the expansion is expected to be completed during the 2016-17 season, making the Main Stand one of the largest all-seater single stands in Europe's top divisions.

After work on the Main Stand has been completed, Liverpool will move onto expanding the Anfield Road end with a view to taking the stadium capacity to just under 60,000.

The club had originally considered leaving Anfield, their home since 1892, before opting instead to stay and improve the existing stadium.

Steven Gerrard: Wants Sterling to make a decision

Steven Gerrard: Wants Sterling to make a decision

Steven Gerrard has urged Raheem Sterling to make a decision on his Anfield future "quickly" and believes he risks stagnating as a squad player if he leaves Liverpool.

Relations between the club and the player's agent Aidy Ward hit a low last month when the Reds cancelled a meeting to restart negotiations over a new deal after comments from Ward suggesting the 20-year-old would not sign a new contract.

The England international turned down Liverpool's #100,000-a-week offer in January and all the noises coming from the player's camp since appear to have been designed to manufacture a move away.

Manchester City, Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Real Madrid have all been linked but Gerrard believes Sterling risks losing regular football if he leaves Anfield.

"I wish I did know (what will happen) because I have been reading a lot about him myself," said the 35-year-old.

"I think the only two people that know are Raheem and his agent.

"I think for the player's sake and for all of us fans out there he needs to make the decision quickly.

"I hope he stays. I think for his development as a player he has a fantastic manager to look after him, a great set of team-mates.

"I think it's important he plays week in week out, keeps trying to learn and strive to become a world-class player.

"I think the frustrating thing for me would be if he went to a club and became a squad player and just another number and he didn't have that chance to progress. That's the risk."

Gerrard, speaking at the launch of BT Sport's Champions League coverage of which he will be a pundit, is currently preparing for his move to Major League Soccer with Los Angeles Galaxy.

His departure from Anfield, confirmed back in January, turned out to be the first of many with fellow players Glen Johnson and Brad Jones not offered new contracts and, following an end-of-season review, assistant manager Colin Pascoe and coach Mike Marsh also lost their jobs.

"I was very surprised. I didn't expect there to be any changes in the staff positions," added Gerrard.

"I think Brendan (Rodgers) and the bosses have made those decisions and I'm looking in with a keen interest to see who he puts alongside him and how he tries to improve or strengthen his staff moving forward.

"A lot of names have been mentioned but I can't give you any insight or names because I'm now on the outside and don't have that relationship with Brendan any more where I might have got a bit of a nudge on it.

"I think Brendan will obviously have felt he needed to make some changes and freshen certain things up in his staff.

"I am very interested to see who he puts in alongside him and also to hear Brendan speak in a press conference to see why he has decided to make those decisions."

Former Reds assistant manager Pako Ayestaran, ex-defender Sami Hyypia and one-time Manchester United coach Rene Meulensteen have all been linked with the posts.

The position of Rodgers remains safe following his review with chairman Tom Werner and Mike Gordon - president of club owners Fenway Sports Group - but he has been left in no doubt improvements have to be made after last season's sixth-place finish.

Should he not get off to the best of starts in the new campaign he will find the shadow of Jurgen Klopp growing larger.

The recently-departed Borussia Dortmund manager's agent Marc Kosicke has said the German is interested in a move to England and would not be put off by not having Champions League football.

"The Premier League is very exciting," Kosicke told German media outlet SPOX.

"And we do not only think about the top four because there are some other great clubs below them.

"It is always all about the challenge. When Jurgen signed for Dortmund there were other clubs who had better prestige and were in better financial mood at this time. Nevertheless he decided for Dortmund.

"He has the great ability to develop things. If he goes into a stadium, feels the energy and thinks that he can make a difference here, this could be more attractive to him than going with the big deals and aiming for the treble."

Danny Ings: Striker has agreed to join Liverpool

Danny Ings: Striker has agreed to join Liverpool

Jason McAteer feels new Liverpool signing Danny Ings will have to be patient for first-team football at Anfield.

Liverpool confirmed they have agreed terms with the Burnley forward, whose contract expires this month, but a fee between the clubs is yet to be established.

Ings, who will complete the move on July 1, had been the subject of interest from Tottenham but has opted to join Liverpool, where McAteer feels the striker may have to bide his time.

“I think he only got about 10 or 11 goals the season before this one but being in the Premier League has meant his all-round game has come on,” McAteer, who played for Liverpool between 1995 and 1999, told Sky Sports News HQ.

“His workrate is fantastic and he’s been the shining light in a disappointing season for Burnley. Everyone has been to watch him and it’s Liverpool that have taken the plunge to bring him to the club.

“Potentially he’s another one of those signings that isn’t going to play straight away, he’s not a marquee signing and he is going to need bedding in for a period.

“He is a quality signing and one for the future.”

Claudio Marchisio: Juventus contract talks yet to begin

Claudio Marchisio: Juventus contract talks yet to begin

Claudio Marchisio's agent has confirmed there is English interest in the Juventus midfielder amid claims he is an Arsenal and Liverpool target.

Marchisio has only 12 months left on his contract at Juve and is reported to be interesting at least two Premier League sides after playing a starring role in the Turin side's run to the Champions League final.

However, Marchisio's father and agent, Stefano, says the 29-year-old would prefer to stay with the Old Lady, although contact talks are yet to begin.

"I read that we'd met with Juventus in Berlin at the Champions League final, and that we'd already defined the details of a new contract," he told Calciomercato.

"The truth is, apart from some former Juventus players, I haven't met with anyone, I'm waiting for a call from the management.

"I think we could meet soon, perhaps within the next seven days. Claudio has repeatedly demonstrated the will to remain at Juve, but we know that it takes two to make a marriage.

"The ball is in the Old Lady's court, I don't think they'd let a player like him go.

"If we don't find an agreement, we'll look around. I've received many calls from top clubs in the Premier League and the Bundesliga."

Jurgen Klopp: Taking a year out after leaving Dortmund

Jurgen Klopp: Taking a year out after leaving Dortmund

Former Borussia Dortmund boss Jurgen Klopp would not want to take over at a club without a sporting director, according to his agent.

Klopp will take a year out of the game after leaving Dortmund but has been widely tipped to join a Premier League club next, with his former colleague Eckhard Krautzun even admitting the 47-year-old had spoken about his desire to manage Manchester United.

Klopp's agent Marc Kosicke, however, insists the German would prefer to join a club with a sporting director in place, a model that is not popular in England.

Kosicke told SPOX: "The Premier League is very exciting.

"And we do not only think about the top four because there are some other great clubs below them. But I am not sure the profile of the job could work.

"In Germany there is a clear separation between manager and sporting director and I think in principle this is very good.

"Jurgen does not like to speak to player's agents or to carry out a transfer. So we have to see which is the most useful arrangement."

Kosicke added: "It is always all about the challenge.

"When Jurgen signed for Dortmund there were other clubs who had better prestige and were in better financial mood at this time. Nevertheless he decided for Dortmund.

Paul Gascoigne has encouraged Raheem Sterling to use the fans to his advantage after the 20-year-old was booed in England’s goalless draw with the Republic of Ireland.

Sterling, who has been plagued by criticism since rejecting a £100,000 a week contract with Liverpool, was booed by travelling England fans and was substituted after 66 minutes, with coach Roy Hodgson conceding after the match that his striker needed to “get a thicker skin” if he was to cope at an international level.

But Gascogine said Sterling’s best course of action would be to channel those comments – and the crowd’s energy - to his own purposes.

“My advice to Sterling is to take that as a compliment,” Gascoigne said of Hodgson’s remarks.

“Because he’s talking to you and not the other players and that means he cares about you.

“The boon side of it (the booing) is enjoy it. I always say it might take 40,000 people to upset one guy but one guy can upset 40,000 by sticking the ball in the back of the net.

“The only reason they’re booing you is because they’re scared of you, the fans are scared of you, they don’t want you to play well, so you try and ignore it, join in with them, have fun with them and relax when you play football. I did, and I didn’t bother with the crowd and I always won them over anyway.

“He needs to take it as a compliment that someone cares for him. The thing to worry about is when they stop talking about you”

Like Sterling, Gascoigne was launched into the senior international sphere at a young age, making his England debut as a 20-year-old against Denmark in 1988. But former England Under-21 coach Stuart Pearce said Gascoigne played in an era when the spotlight shone less brightly on young players.

“In some ways it’s like when the Paul Gascoignes of this world were catapulted into the England senior team at a very young age," Pearce said.

“There were times when maybe his form dropped a little bit and he had to be supported but the glare wasn’t as bad then, and he could probably navigate a career a little bit easier.

“Nowadays with youngsters we catapult them far too early and then obviously, all of a sudden, with the likes of (Ross) Barkley and Sterling, and various other youngsters, they need to be given time to develop, not catapulted too soon, and certainly not written off too soon.

“But you have to build up a mental strength if you’re going to be a top international player.”
