With an abundance of talent available across the United Kingdom, Jack Lusby looks at five potential home-grown targets for Liverpool this summer.

Roy Hodgson’s England stuttered, embarrassingly, to a halt on the big stage at this summer’s World Cup, with performances belying the talent at the 66-year-old manager’s disposal.

Six of these came courtesy of Brendan Rodgers’ Liverpool, a team who finished second in the Premier League just a month before the tournament—as Henry Jackson writes here, this failure was a case of system rather than personnel.

There is a great plethora of talent of English nationality both in the squad and elsewhere, as well as some true gems from Wales, Scotland and Ireland.

As Rodgers’ continued pursuit of Adam Lallana attests to, the Northern Irishman seems to have a predilection towards home-grown talents, and with this in mind here are five players from around the UK that Liverpool could look to this summer.

Alex McCarthy (Goalkeeper, Reading)

Rodgers is after another goalkeeper this summer, to provide competition for Simon Mignolet and add depth to an ever-challenging side, and one option here could be Reading’s Alex McCarthy.

After a hugely impressive debut Premier League season with the relegated side in 2012/13, McCarthy has dropped down a league along with his club and continued to perform confidently.

A man-of-the-match performance against+ the Reds in 2013 underlined this talent, and Rodgers is clearly a fan, after describing the Englishman as “brilliant.”

In 2013/14 for Reading, McCarthy kept 12 clean sheets in 44 Championship appearances, however more impressive than this is that the 24-year-old achieved this despite having to make 3.34 saves per game on average—the third most in the league, according to Squawka.

With the Royals consigned to another season in Championship for 2014/15, McCarthy should look to further his development at a higher level, and Liverpool may be the perfect place.

Nathaniel Clyne (Right-Back, Southampton)

The dour performances of Glen Johnson for England at the World Cup will be of no surprise to any Reds fan, as the 29-year-old has underperformed for over a year now.

Rodgers remains seemingly loyal to the former Portsmouth man, but in the long term this is a position that needs to be addressed, not least due to Johnson’s high wages.

One solution to this would be Southampton’s Nathaniel Clyne, an highly underrated defender in the Premier League.

Signed from Crystal Palace in 2012, the 23-year-old has quietly and consistently performed for the Saints ever since, although throughout 2013/14 Clyne played in rotation with another commendable home-grown player, Calum Chambers.

Liverpool’s Jon Flanagan and Joel Ward of Crystal Palace complete a quartet of young English full-backs likely to contend with Johnson in the future under Hodgson, but as of yet Clyne is the most impressive.

Having already poached Rickie Lambert from St. Mary’s, and with interest in both Lallana and Dejan Lovren reported, perhaps Rodgers should go the whole hog and sign Clyne this summer.

Ben Davies (Left-Back, Swansea City)

Another problem position for the Reds comes on the other side of defence, with Jose Enrique struggling with persistent injury and the gormless Aly Cissokho returning to his parent club, Valencia, following loan.

The Spaniard Enrique seems unlikely to be the first choice for the long term, and as such Rodgers has already set his horizons on a new left-back this summer.

Sevilla’s Alberto Moreno was reported to be close to a move, but negotiations seem to have stalled, suggesting the Reds should perhaps look elsewhere.

Swansea City’s Welsh defender Ben Davies has already successfully supplanted his compatriot Neil Taylor for both club and country, and at 21 years old can only get better.

One of the youngster’s main strengths is his ability to the read the game, with WhoScored.com attributing Davies with having made 1.9 interceptions on average per game last season, compared to Liverpool’s Flanagan (1.7), Enrique (1.1) and Cissokho (1.1).

It will likely be difficult to convince Swansea to part with such a prize talent, but Davies would be a convincing long-term left-back for Rodgers’ Reds.

Will Hughes (Central Midfield, Derby County)

Having signed bullish central midfielder Emre Can already this summer, Liverpool have tightened up the defensive area of their midfield, and now should look to supplement the squad further up the field; an option here would be Derby County’s Will Hughes.

The youngster has been linked with the Reds in the past, and at 19 years old would be a solid addition to the squad, and one that would likely develop handsomely in years to come.

Hughes scored four goals and made six more, according to WhoScored, in 44 Championship appearances last season, as Derby made it to the Play-off Final, only to lose out to Harry Redknapp’s QPR.

A tidy passer with a maturity and tactical nous beyond his years, Hughes would be great signing for Rodgers’ Liverpool squad, and one who could contribute long into the future.

Any door still open on this transfer was thrown into doubt this week though—Hughes signing a new long-term contract at Pride Park.

Ravel Morrison (Attacking Midfield, West Ham United)

A wild card selection in this quintet, West Ham United’s English attacking midfielder Ravel Morrison would be a surprise target for the Reds this summer, but one who would likely complement Rodgers’ squad adeptly.

A player of questionable temperament, but unquestionable talent, Morrison announced himself on the Premier League stage with a brilliant solo goal against Spurs towards the beginning of the 2013/14.

However, the 21-year-old’s role with the Hammers quickly dwindled, and a loan move to QPR followed in February, with problems involving the agent of West Ham manager Sam Allardyce reportedly playing their part in the switch.

A mercurial attacker, Morrison would require the man-management abilities of Rodgers to settle within the Reds’ squad, but another dynamic option in the North Irishman’s squad would be hugely welcome.

Which home-grown players would you like Liverpool to sign this summer? Let us know in the comments below.

Liverpool have signed up two players from rivals Tottenham, defender Kevin Stewart and goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Saturday, September 26, 2009: Liverpool players warm-up before the FA Premier Academy League match against Manchester City at the Kirkby Academy. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Stewart, a 20-year-old centre back who previously had a loan spell at Crewe, has signed a two-year deal according to Sky Sports.

The player himself spoke of his delight at the move on twitter:

Meanwhile, Vigouroux we also understand is moving north to Liverpool. He was on trial at the club earlier this year, and similar to Stewart signs after his contract at Spurs expired.

The 20-year-old played for Alex Inglethorpe’s under-21s against Fulham in April. He’s previously had a loan spell at Conference side Hyde

He posted a more cryptic Tweet:

Both players worked with Liverpool under 21 coach Inglethorpe at White Hart Lane and he is likely to have been instrumental in their moves to Merseyside.

Vigouroux is Chilean (so he’ll help Alexis Sanchez settle in at Anfield ;-) ).

Adriano: Linked with a move but hoping to stay at Barcelona

Adriano: Linked with a move but hoping to stay at Barcelona

Adriano has expressed a desire to remain at Barcelona but says he will not know if he is wanted until he speaks to new coach Luis Enrique.

The Brazilian utility player still has three years left on his current deal at the Nou Camp but has been tipped to leave this summer as part of a squad rebuilding plan.

In recent weeks rumours have persisted that he could be sold and both Liverpool and Roma have been credited with an interest.

"At the moment I am staying, but I know that there is interest from other clubs," he told Sport.

"I do have a contract until 2017 and until the president tells me something different I will continue.

"I am only thinking about Barca and really would like to stay. I want to talk to the coach and clear things up.

"Lately, there have been a lot of rumours that are not based on anything and I want to start pre-season focused without rumours of whether I am going or staying.

"I do not know what I will do, but if I stay then I will show I am capable of playing more than people think."

Enrique has yet to hold his first training session as Barca boss, but Adriano is confident that the new man will do things the right way.

"Luis Enrique knows that club, he has been close to Guardiola, but he has his own philosophy," he continued.

"He likes good football and brings the best out in his players and that is good, like it should be.

"Now he is the boss and we are all behind him."

Dejan Lovren: Has been linked with a move away

Sky sources understand that Southampton are reluctant to let any other players leave, despite speculation linking Dejan Lovren with a possible move.

Saints have already sold three of their star players this summer, with midfielder Adam Lallana and striker Rickie Lambert joining Liverpool, while defender Luke Shaw has signed for Manchester United.

The loss of the England trio has weakened the squad at St Mary's and reports have suggested that Liverpool, Arsenal and Spurs are keen to lure defender Lovren away.

But new manager Ronald Koeman is determined to keep the rest of his players as he starts planning for the upcoming Premier League campaign.

The Dutchman, who succeeded Mauricio Pochettino last month, is more interested in recruiting players, with the club thought to have tabled a bid for Feyenoord striker Graziano Pelle.

Saints are also thought to be closing on a deal for winger Dusan Tadic after agreeing a fee with FC Twente.

It’s been described by many as the best World Cup ever. Fast, furious football and teams playing with commitment and passion (bar England perhaps).

The second round of matches didn’t disappoint with games going to the wire, stunning strikes and dramatic exits as 16 teams quickly became 8.

As far as Liverpool are concerned, Mamadou Sakho and Simon Mignolet remain Liverpool’s only interest in the tournament, but neither played in their country’s second round matches.

Sakho is nursing a thigh injury, which also makes him a doubt for France’s quarter-final clash against Germany at the Estádio Maracanã in Rio de Janeiro on Friday (5pm BST kick-off).

Nevertheless, it’s all set up to be a thrilling encounter with both teams playing with cohesion and unity throughout their World Cup campaigns so far.

Germany though looked less than convincing in their 2-1 second round defeat of Aleria and we get the feeling the wheels are just becoming a bit loose for Joachim Löw’s side.

The Germans won’t give up without one hell of a fight though and France remain unpredictable under immense pressure.

We’re putting our money on it being a cagey encounter come Friday:

  • Under 2.5 goals at 1.67 /li>

  • Match to be decided by a penalty shoot-out at 6.50

  • Draw at half-time and full-time (90 mins) at 4.75

If France-Germany is going to be a tense affair, we’re predicting the opposite for Brazil v Colombia later on Friday evening (9pm BST kick-off).

Both teams play quite open football and Colombia have been on the attacking march in recent games.

James Rodriguez’s stunning goal silenced Luis Suarez-less Uruguay in the second round, before he hit a second to eliminate them from the competition.

In this highly anticipated meeting of South Americans, we’re going for:

  • Over 3.5 goals at 3.30

  • James Rodriguez (Colombia) first goal at 9.00

  • Colombia to advance to semi-finals at 2.80

We’ll be back later in the week with our preview and betting tips ahead of Argentina v Belgium and Holland v Costa Rica, so stay tuned.

So to recap our tips for Friday’s World Cup quarter-finals:

  • Under 2.5 goals at 1.67 /li>

  • Match to be decided by a penalty shoot-out at 6.50

  • Draw at half-time and full-time (90 mins) at 4.75

  • Over 3.5 goals at 3.30

  • James Rodriguez (Colombia) first goal at 9.00

  • Colombia to advance to semi-finals at 2.80

And then there were 8 — Quarter-finals heat World Cup up further

Unknown   at  18:48  No comments

A week after Luis Suarez‘s bite incident in Brazil, and with the dust yet to settle, Danny Gallagher faces up to the realisation that this could be the end of Liverpool and the Uruguayan’s relationship.

After the majestic Premier League campaign of 2013/2014, many fans, myself included, were hard-pressed not to be left forcefully digesting a turbulent cocktail of emotion – ranging from raw passion and pride to anguish and desolation.

A season that initially bore little optimism, with only the bleak ‘what-if’ of European football qualification, resulted in a final-day title decider with Brendan Rodgers’ men letting the Premier League trophy pass agonisingly close, by a mere two points, into the neighbouring grasp of free-spending Manchester City; a simply unfathomable fairy tale.

Since then, the World Cup has arrived – and for fans of England, unfortunately passed. Nevertheless the time is nigh to begin thinking about next season; a bubble of excitement draped with realistic expectations of serious intent. That was, however, until Uruguay happened to face Italy in Natal on June 24th.

Déjà vu

“Surely not again? A bite? For the third time!?”

Everything had been going so well for Luis Suarez – a sublime Premier League season had seen ‘El Pistolero’ drowning in every sporting accolade on offer; thoroughly deserved in unquestionable measure.

The stage was indeed set for Suarez to take his scintillating form to the greatest show on earth, proving first hand to the eyes of the globe his rightful claim to the title of one of, if not the, greatest striker on the planet.

Instead, Suarez’s now ever apparent ‘red mist’ descended once more; teeth were sunk and uproar was unleashed – in hearty measure. It is difficult writing this as a Liverpool fan, but the latest antics of Suarez simply beggar belief.

suarez_bite

In the immediate aftermath of the Ivanovic bite, it would not be unfair to suggest that perhaps rose tinted spectacles were simultaneously sported by many Kopites.

It cannot be forgotten that in said incident, Suarez escaped instant punishment from the referee, thus later capitalising upon this human error of the official’s by sending an equalising header crashing past Petr Cech at a jubilant Kop end.

This time however, things are different. On no occasion have the actions of Suarez been excusable, yet is it perhaps this latest saga involving Juventus’ Giorgio Chiellini that lay things in a more observable light.

Three strikes and you’re out

Will Liverpool hold on to Suarez? Certainly a question that is not readily answerable. Yet with Barcelona looming and an eerie mist of subdued tranquillity descending from all parties, it appears that this is the summer that we shall finally part with our phenomenal, albeit highly troubled, South American magician.

Where then, should it be the case, does this leave Liverpool with regards to the upcoming season?

Many a sceptic would here strongly suggest an educated lowering of expectations concerning the Reds’ 2015/16 exploits – perhaps likening the scenario to that of Spurs and the loss of the talismanic Gareth Bale – “No amount of money can replace such a player”, they say… but really?

Rebuild

Should Suarez depart, Rodgers immediately finds himself with a healthy hand of cards to play. The interested parties of Real Madrid and FC Barcelona, respectively, will be more than astutely aware that Suarez’s latest misdemeanours will not slice a generous sum from his price tag.

The transfer window of last summer only has to be recollected to observe just how intently Liverpool and owners Fenway Sports Group will fight tooth and nail to maintain their prized assets.

Last summer’s transfer window, coupled with the Reds’ domestic campaign, proudly proved that Liverpool are still very much a winning club, and, with all due respect to Tottenham Hotspur, do not identify themselves as a selling institution.

The buy-out clause of Suarez’s contract, rumoured to be around the £70-80 million mark, (and applicable only to the key Spanish clubs in question, depending upon which sources you believe) leaves Liverpool in the rather luxurious situation of either playing hard-ball with the delirious spendthrifts of Real Madrid.

Likewise, lowering the price margin for Barcelona, on the premise that the Catalan club include one of the decorated talents of either Pedro or Alexis Sanchez; the latter a current talk of many after a tremendous World Cup with his native Chile.

New era

With the return to the promised land of the Champions League just around the corner, optimism should be rife. The successful acquisitions of Rickie Lambert, Emre Can and Adam Lallana early into the battlefield that is the transfer window bodes well for Rodgers in formulating his blueprint of assault for the coming campaign.

Should other circling rumours be true, the watchful eyes of the Reds’ scouting network have also been observing the likes of Lazar Markovi?, Divock Origi and Dejan Lovren, all potential-laden outlets who could each offer a different dimension to Liverpool’s upcoming fixture-hectic year.

Last season evidenced that an optimum level of understanding had been achieved, with Rodgers’ ethos gradually saturating itself more and more across Anfield, subsequently seeing a commanding rise in players such as Jordan Henderson, Raheem Sterling, Philippe Coutinho and Daniel Sturridge.

It goes without saying that Rodgers will not have lavished away from football this summer. Rather, the football-obsessed Northern Irishman will have been meticulously planning the next step for Liverpool’s restoration to the height of European football.

Financial muscle

It is only a matter of time before the Premier League powerhouses begin to bludgeon the transfer market, armed with hefty chequebooks – something of which Liverpool have never really had the royalty of doing so.

Despite this however, given the chance to seek out his targets and identify a suitable spending margin, Rodgers has proven first hand that he can efficiently and methodically manoeuvre through the seas of inflated price tags and laughable wage demands, whilst procuring a few gems along the way.

Kopites should not be dismayed by the possibility of Suarez departing. Life will go on at L4 and certainly no individual is bigger than the club. A new challenge has arisen, one that should be grasped with both hands.

Liverpool have graced the Champions League before, that is a given. Brendan Rodgers on the other hand, has not. This is a prime opportunity for the Carnlough born man to pit his wits, expertise and philosophy against Europe’s finest.

Different emphasis will be placed upon the Reds next season. Should it occur, losing a 31 goals-a-season striker is never an easy variable to accommodate. If last season taught us anything however, it is that a solid step forward has been taken, an air of confidence has been inhaled and a real sense of belief and intention now surrounds Liverpool football club once again.

As reported meetings with Barcelona are soon to take place, Suarez may leave – or Suarez may stay.

Regardless, the team will build, improve and assert themselves once more.

With the return to the Champions League and the big guns of Europe eying up a revitalised Reds side, Brendan Rodgers’ project at Liverpool is finally beginning to come to fruition – the baring of fruit is not far away.

Come the start of the 2014/15 season, a new era will begin.

Luis Suarez: Could be on his way to Barcelona

Luis Suarez: Could be on his way to Barcelona

Liverpool’s Managing Director Ian Ayre is reportedly meeting officials from Barcelona in London today to discuss the potential transfer of Luis Suarez.

Barcelona have made no secret of their interest in signing the controversial Uruguayan striker, though Liverpool have so far made no comment.

If Barca meet Suarez’s release clause – between £70 million-£80m – the move could go ahead and Liverpool could be particularly tempted if Alexis Sanchez moves in the opposition direction as part of the deal.

Suarez is currently serving a four-month ban for biting Italy's Giorgio Chiellini at the World Cup.

Following the 27-year-old’s apology - which Barca reportedly had a major influence in procuring - the La Liga side have stepped up their pursuit.

On Tuesday sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta said Suarez "has the necessary quality to play for Barca."

Negotiations are not likely to be completely straightforward. Liverpool do not believe the ban reduces Suarez’s value. Barcelona are likely to argue it does and reports suggest they will offer in the region of £60m.

The offer of Sanchez, valued at £30 million, could help though the Chile international is also a target for other big clubs around Europe.

Fabio Borini: Could be back in Liverpool colours next season

Fabio Borini: Could be back in Liverpool colours next season

Fabio Borini's agent has reiterated that the Italian is returning to Liverpool this summer and that he is not looking to leave.

Borini, who cost Liverpool more than £10million when they signed him from Roma in 2012, spent last season on-loan at Sunderland, and he was a big hit on Wearside.

Sunderland boss Gus Poyet has not hidden his desire to bring the 23-year-old back to the Stadium of Light - but his future is in the hands of Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers.

Rodgers has stated that he is ready to welcome back Borini this summer, meaning Sunderland will have to wait and see if he figures in their plans for next season.

But Borini's agent feels he will be staying at Anfield.

“Fabio goes back to Liverpool to stay there, as stated by the manager Rodgers a few weeks ago,” Marco De Marchi told Calcionews24.

“So far, Liverpool have not received any communication regarding his transfer.

“I would not be surprised if there were other clubs who want him, because I consider him a complete striker.

“But for the moment, all I can say with certainty is that Fabio has returned to Liverpool to stay.”

Liverpool will hold talks with Barcelona officials in London on Wednesday over the transfer of Luis Suarez, according to reports in all national broadsheet newspapers and The Liverpool Echo.

The news is reported very similarly by The Telegraph, The Times, The Guardian and The Echo; that Ian Ayre will travel to London to meet Barcelona director of football management Raul Sanllehi for an opening negotiation.

“Liverpool remain adamant Suarez will be sold only should a club meet a release-clause of around £80m that was included in the £200,000-a-week contract he signed in December”, write The Guardian.

“Ayre will also take the opportunity to step up Liverpool’s pursuit of Barca attacker Alexis Sanchez,” writes James Pearce in The Echo. “Brendan Rodgers is a big admirer of the Chile international, who is valued at around £30million.”

All the reports explain that Ayre and Liverpool will make it clear to Barcelona that they will not allow Suarez to leave on the cheap. The Catalans must pay the asking price – believed to be close to £80 million, especially given Real Madrid spent £85m on Gareth Bale last summer.

Liverpool are keen to ensure Sanchez, the impressive Chile forward who is comfortable playing on the right of a three-man attack, is part of the deal as a replacement for Suarez.

Barcelona’s public courting of Suarez continued on Tuesday when their sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta praised the Uruguayan for his apology following the bite on Giorgio Chiellni.

“Suarez has shown he is humble enough to admit an error, which is very important,” Zubizarreta said as the club unveiled Ivan Rakitic at Camp Nou.

“He has been humble enough to apologise to those he has affected, because it happened in the middle of a festival of football. In this case it’s the best thing a person can do.

“Everyone knows that Luis is an excellent player, everyone knows last season he played in various positions in attack, but everyone also knows that he is a Liverpool player.”

Meanwhile, former Liverpool director of football Damien Comolli – the man who signed Suarez at Anfield in January 2011 – explained he and former boss Kenny Dalglish always feared Suarez being lured away by one of Spain’s big two clubs.

“Speaking to Luis before, and during, the World Cup, he’s always said he is very happy at Liverpool,” said the Frenchman to talkSPORT on Tuesday.

“But, during our time together at Anfield, he told me that his dream is to play in Spain at one point in his career, especially at Barcelona or Real Madrid.

“His wife’s family live in Spain, he’s in Barcelona every time he gets a couple of days off and has a house there.

“I’ve always thought in my mind, and I told Kenny Dalglish at the time, that, if either of the big Spanish two came in and tried to get him, Liverpool would have a hard time to try and keep him.”

Suarez’s departure, pending Barcelona stumping up the asking price, looks inevitable.

Pasti ramai tak sabar nak tunggu aksi beliau..
