Emre Can impressed in his centre-back role against Burnley, and Brendan Rodgers should consider using him there for the foreseeable future.
A lot has been made of the Reds’ disappointing time of things in the summer transfer window, with several of Rodgers’ new purchases failing to ignite.
If there is one player who has shown real promise, however- Adam Lallana has also started to show glimpses of his quality in fairness- it is Can.
The 20-year-old looks the complete player in many ways, combining strength, pace, quality on the ball and versatility.
Although predominantly seen as a central midfielder, Can replaced Kolo Toure in a right-sided centre-back role against the Clarets on Boxing Day and excelled. Rodgers was very praiseworthy of his 45-minute showing, and hinted that his future belongs at the back.
“Emre has a big future here. It was curtailed a bit in the summer when he was trying to get his fitness but had an ankle issue which meant he was in and out of training.
“Emre has great athleticism and has presence on the pitch and is an outstanding footballer. He is young and still acclimatising to the game here.
“His favourite position is more defensive. He likes to be in that central role and look to contain the game and challenge and be strong in the duel.
“Emre coming on at Burnley gave us assurance and physicality. He is someone whose influence as the season goes on will be greater.”
Can is far from unfamiliar with playing at the back, and as Jack Lusby outlined in September, his superb performance for Germany’s Under-21 side outlined his expertise in that position.
Although there is an argument to say that Can is a little wasted in a more defensive role, with his dominant style potentially Nemanja Matic-esque in the middle of the park, given Liverpool’s woes at the back he should certainly be given a run there.
Presuming Rodgers continues to play the 3-4-2-1 formation that has bought some success in recent weeks, the former Bayer Leverkusen man will thrive on the right of the back three.
The unfortunate individual to make way, should Rodgers decide to give Can a run in the team, will likely be Kolo Toure, although he would actually be better off dropping the erratic Martin Skrtel.
The Slovakian has flattered to deceive time and time again so far this season, and the Reds’ defence will simply never be a place of calm while he is in it.
With Toure in the middle of the back-three, and Can and the impressive Mamadou Sakho either side of him, Liverpool would suddenly have a slightly more solid-looking rearguard. Sadly, Rodgers appears to be a big Skrtel admirer.
There is huge potential in Can, arguably more so than any of Liverpool’s summer buys, and he really does look as if he could become a top-class player for the Reds in the coming years.
Despite his undoubted excellence in midfield, his future should lie at centre-back for now – especially if we are to continue with three at the back where the right and left sided centre-backs must be mobile and dynamic.
It’s easy to be knee-jerk, particularly when you are desperately looking positives in a very disappointing season to date, but his reading of the game and composure look terrific.
We might just have found the answer to the Reds’ defensive problems.

Ini adalah cara dimana Liverpool amat kurang bertindak atas sebab keupayaan winger Liverpool setakat ini yg masih tiada kesudahan dan kemungkinan Ojo adalah org yg akan berani bertindak.

Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet intends to use his axing from the side as a positive experience as he returns looking to prove he has benefited from the break.
Manager Brendan Rodgers said the Belgium international would be sidelined for an "indefinite" period after dropping him for the match at Manchester United a fortnight ago.
However, the 26-year-old earned an unexpected reprieve when Brad Jones was forced off with a thigh injury 15 minutes into the 1-0 Boxing Day win at Burnley, and Mignolet now looks set for a second chance against Swansea on Monday.
He and Rodgers held a frank meeting in the manager's office ahead of the Old Trafford clash, and Mignolet went away to work on his game during his spell on the sidelines.
While he has returned ahead of schedule, it does not mean he has not learned something from his exile.
"We spoke together and cleared up a few things and I think that was a positive discussion," the Belgian said.
"I will not discuss what we spoke about, but it was an honest meeting – why not?
"There is always a reason and discussion why, and I am a guy who always tries to speak and be positive and work hard on my game, and that is what I have done in this period with the goalie coach (John Achterberg) and Jonesy.
"Sometimes you have to make something positive from a negative thing like going out of the team, which I've tried to do.
"It is always difficult at first but I am a 26-year-old goalkeeper and I know what I have to work on, things in your game can still improve.
"You can reflect on your game and look at certain things where maybe, with the busy period we've had, you wouldn't have had the chance, and that is what I have done.
"You learn a lot and you can move on and hopefully we can build on that.
"I don't have to prove anything. The only thing I can do is work hard and do my best and show what I am capable of on the pitch."
Mignolet was mercilessly taunted by Burnley fans with almost every touch of the ball and he did not help himself by drilling one clearance into Danny Ings and scrambling to claim the loose ball while somehow allowing a Mamadou Sakho backpass to run out for a corner before he attempted to kick it.
But the goalkeeper, who has been under scrutiny all season, insists he does not hear the barracking, let alone allow it to affect him.
"I don't hear it. You get on with the game," he said.
"When I was in the Belgian second division, sometimes I played in front of 500 people and that is a lot more difficult than when you play in a ground with atmosphere because it is more difficult to focus yourself.
"You just focus on the job in hand, saving the balls that come across you."
Everton counterpart Tim Howard last week suggested it was a long and difficult road back after being dropped, but Mignolet rejected that suggestion.
"That is his opinion – I don't have to agree with it," he added. "You have to deal with the game how it comes.
"I played 75 minutes and kept a clean sheet and we got three points (at Burnley). I'll see what happens in the next game."
