Rodgers: Raheem needs protecting. Brendan Rodgers says Raheem Sterling needs to...
Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has warned about the growing expectation on Raheem Sterling’s shoulders after some impressive displays for England.
The exciting 19-year-old bolstered his reputation with a fine individual display in Monday’s 2-0 win over Switzerland in the European Championship qualifiers.
Sterling has remained a consistent performer for the Reds, scoring twice in three matches, but Rodgers is concerned about the repeated trend of building up young players in this country.
"I think he needs protection. I have seen it over the years," he said.
"He is a wonderful talent, he is doing great for Liverpool but there are still a lot of things he needs to learn and he knows that and is a mature boy for his age.
"He has grown into a wonderful young man and his consistency and performances are there and the period he has been in the team has been exceptional
"I expect him to keep progressing but in terms of where he is at I think we need to be careful.
"You see so many players where there is a reliance on them, especially with England who, for whatever reason, tend to look for one player to put up on a pedestal and very quickly knock him down.
"Raheem will make mistakes, he will have bad games but he will also have outstanding games and it is keeping the calmness with him because he still has a way to go.
"He is certainly performing at a real high and consistent level.
"England know as well as anyone they need a team so they don't have to focus just on Raheem.
"It has to be the team and that will always be the winner for England when they come together and they were excellent against Switzerland (in their 2-0 European Qualifier victory) as a team."
The absence of striker Daniel Sturridge, who suffered an injury on international duty, has forced Rodgers to alter his forward line for Saturday's game against Aston Villa.
Rickie Lambert, a late substitute in Switzerland, appears the natural successor, but Rodgers hinted that he might start on the bench with Lazar Markovic getting the nod.
"Rickie has been very good since he came in," said Rodgers.
"He has mostly had an impact from the bench and you see even with England the other night when he came on he showed good ability to play a great weighted pass for Danny Welbeck to score.
"He is working very well and if he doesn't get a start he will certainly start against Middlesbrough in the (Capital One) cup so his game time will come – but at the moment he is playing a great supporting role from the bench."

Paul Merson predicts an easy win for Manchester United, thinks Liverpool will just edge out Aston Villa and fancies Arsenal to beat Man City.
Man Utd v QPR, 3.30pm, Sunday, Sky Sports 1
If you're a neutral then Man United are the team to watch this season. They will let in goals because they're nowhere near good enough at the back, but they could be as good as anybody going forward if all the players click. Robin van Persie and Radamel Falcao are both out-and-out centre-forwards and like playing up front on their own, so if he plays them both you might see them running into each other. Then you've got Wayne Rooney, Angel di Maria and Juan Mata - can you play all three of them? Louis van Gaal is getting paid a lot of money to make those decisions, but I do wonder why they sold Danny Welbeck for £16m when they're buying wing-backs for £30m? I think this is the ideal game for the new players to come in, though. QPR had a massive result against Sunderland and if they can come away with a respectable score they'll be happy. They will set themselves up to be hard to beat, but I don't think they've got the ammunition to score in this game.
PAUL PREDICTS: 3-0
Hull v West Ham, 7pm, Monday, Sky Sports 1
I like Steve Bruce and I think he's a good manager with some good players, but Hull haven't been great so far. They dug in to get a result against Stoke, but they will be very disappointed with the defeat at Aston Villa and also with their exit from the Europa League. They would have loved to have got into the group stages, so that was a real kick in the teeth. West Ham looked like the Harlem Globetrotters against Crystal Palace, but the performance against Southampton was probably the worst they have had in years. I don't know which West Ham will turn up in this game and so I will go for a draw. These are probably the two most unpredictable teams of the season so far.
PAUL PREDICTS: 1-1
Liverpool v Aston Villa
This is the hardest game of the weekend to predict and it really should be the easiest. Daniel Sturridge's injury is a big problem for Liverpool and the question is will Mario Balotelli step up? The reason they paid the money is for games like this and they need him to perform. This game will suit Villa, as we saw last season when they were 2-0 up at Anfield and should have won. They like to play on the counter-attack with their pace and they don't have to worry about making things happen. They haven't lost a game yet, so their confidence is high and it all depends how they cope with Liverpool's movement. I've got a feeling about this game. I have to go for a home win because Liverpool should have too much class, but I wouldn't be shocked if it ends up being a draw.
PAUL PREDICTS: 2-1
Arsenal v Man City
Danny Welbeck ticks all the boxes for Arsenal and is exactly what Arsene Wenger wants - £16million for an England international who has already played for a big club is great value. He's just scored two goals for his country in midweek and that makes things even better. I would say he needs to play as a centre-forward and I just hope the manager isn't stubborn and plays Alexis Sanchez ahead of him because I think he can definitely make Arsenal a better team. I honestly think they will beat Man City on Saturday. You see complacency in Man City (why else do they lose to teams like Stoke?) and they aren't going to kick Arsenal off the pitch. Man City beat them 6-3 last season, but Arsenal had as many chances in that game and it wasn't a steamrollering. I think City will lose this - and that would be a disaster for them.
PAUL PREDICTS: 2-1
Chelsea v Swansea
Swansea have been doing very well and this will be a hard game for Chelsea because they have got pace to trouble them on the counter-attack. I thought Chelsea were brilliant going forward in their last game against Everton, but I couldn't believe how open they were. Usually you see Chelsea teams protecting the back four like a machine, but Jose Mourinho must have decided he's got the players to go another way and he wants to have a go. He's never had the forwards to score bundles of goals before, but now he thinks he can outscore the opposition in every match. This will be a hard-fought home win.
PAUL PREDICTS: 2-0
Crystal Palace v Burnley
This game is a cup final and is a big, big football game for both teams. Both of these teams are going to be around the bottom of the table and both of them will be highlighting this game as one they can win. If you lose this game then things will only get harder and it's a really tough one to call, but I would have to go with Palace because of their experience of being in hard Premier League games last year. Burnley drew with Man United in their last game, but showed Swansea too much respect a few weeks ago. They would take a draw, but I will lean towards the more experienced team.
PAUL PREDICTS: 2-1
Southampton v Newcastle
Southampton have been doing very well in the games they haven't been expected to win, but have found it hard when they are in games they should win. They played really well against Liverpool and won easily at West Ham when they expected nothing - but they never looked like winning their so-called "easy" game against West Brom. I think they will expect to win this game and it's harder to make things happen in those matches. Newcastle have been playing well, but haven't been getting the results that their performances have deserved. They are not as bad as some of their results.
PAUL PREDICTS: 1-1
Stoke v Leicester
How are you supposed to predict football sometimes? Stoke fell over the line to draw with Hull, who had 10 men for most of the game - but then went to Manchester City, who have one of the best home records in the world of football and won. How can you call that? I hate going against Stoke at home, but I must say I have been very impressed with Leicester - however, they haven't got a lot of points yet and that's a concern. I will go for a home win, but only a narrow one because Leicester aren't a bad side.
PAUL PREDICTS: 1-0
Sunderland v Tottenham
I've watched Sunderland quite a few times this season. They did well against Man United, but against West Brom they didn't do very well and against QPR they were terrible. I think Tottenham will suffocate them, despite losing to Liverpool in their last game. Liverpool were very good that day and I think that showed Spurs are still some way behind the top teams, but I'm definitely going for an away win this week.
PAUL PREDICTS: 0-2
West Brom v Everton
I'm doing this game on Soccer Saturday and there should be goals because Everton have let in 10 goals in their three games so far. Is Roberto Martinez going in for entertainment like he did at Wigan? At that club he wasn't really expected to win every week, but Everton need to perform this year given the amount of money they've spent. They've been all over the place so far. West Brom were disappointing at Swansea and it could have been any score that day, so I'm going for an Everton win to kick-start their season.
PAUL PREDICTS: 1-3

Injuries and a squad full of talent means Brendan Rodgers is set to shuffle his pack for the visit of Aston Villa on Saturday. Ben Twelves takes a look at some more of the options available to the Liverpool manager.
Brendan Rodgers heads into the clash against Aston Villa with Daniel Sturridge unavailable due to a thigh injury attained in training with England and also the possibility of question marks over the fitness of Joe Allen, who is struggling with an ankle problem sustained on a woeful pitch in Andorra on Tuesday night.
The injury to Sturridge and potentially Allen – two key players in the team – mean that the Liverpool boss could face a number of decisions over his starting team for Saturday’s game against Villa with forced changes to personnel possibly impacting on the formation and set-up of the team.
An excellent summer transfer window means that the Reds are now well stocked with the numbers and quality for such problems, which has in turn opened up a number of options of real strength to the Ulsterman.
Huge talents such as Philippe Coutinho, Emre Can and Lazar Markovic all featured amongst the substitutes at White Hart Lane last time out illustrating perfectly the strength in depth now at Rodgers’ disposal, and the Brazilian magician and Serbian will be pushing for starting places on Saturday afternoon, although the German will miss out through injury.
With the Reds now looking slightly short of quality in attack following Sturridge’s injury, Fabio Borini, who came in for strong criticism from sections of the fan base for refusing to leave Anfield in the summer transfer window, could become involved in the squad to boost striking alternatives, especially if Allen fails to recover in time.
The Team
Regardless of what shape Rodgers chooses to play, the back five picks itself after picking up the Reds first clean sheet of the season. Despite one or two nervy moments in north London two weeks ago, defensively Liverpool were an improvement on what was produced in the 3-1 defeat at the Etihad.
Therefore, Mignolet would continue in goal, and the back four would line up with Javier Manquillo at right back, Dejan Lovren and Mamadou Sakho at centre back and Alberto Moreno at left back, with Kolo Toure and Jose Enrique on the bench as Glen Johnson and Martin Skrtel are still suffering with injury.
In midfield is where Rodgers could be forced to make his first change with Philippe Coutinho ready in waiting both options if Allen fails to make the match. The fixture being at Anfield and Coutinho operating better from a deep midfield role with his ability to pick passes and unlock teams from deep would see him a strong option to partner Steven Gerrard and Henderson in the midfield, showing perfectly the strength in depth the squad now possesses.
The change of shape to a three man attack would see Raheem Sterling and Mario Balotelli occupy two of the spaces naturally, with one shirt left up for grabs. Rickie Lambert could come into the team with Rodgers possibly opting to play Balotelli slightly wider as he’s spoken of before, but Lazar Markovic, who has impressed twice in two substitute appearances so far should be given the nod on the right side of a three.
If Allen is fit to play, he should remain in the team and Coutinho on the bench, handing Markovic his first start in a front three alongside Sterling and Balotelli, giving a Liverpool an extremely exciting attack.
The Line-up.
With Coutinho and Markovic come into the starting XI in place of Allen and Sturridge, in a 4-3-3 formation, Brendan Rodgers’ starting team should look like this on Saturday:
If Allen is fit to start however, he deserves to keep his place in the team and Rodgers should shape his team up like so:
An excellent result against Tottenham two weeks ago put Rodgers’ men back on track and once more the Reds will have to produce another good performance if they are to overcome Paul Lambert’s Aston Villa, who have proven to be a tough test for Rodgers’ side at Anfield in recent seasons.
As long as the team perform, the result should come.

Brendan Rodgers‘ Liverpool face Aston Villa on Saturday evening as they return to Premier League action. Ben Twelves takes a look at an interesting team selection choice for the Liverpool boss.
The Reds return to Anfield for the first time since the opening weekend success over Southampton, looking to record back-to-back wins at the second attempt this early campaign against third placed Aston Villa.
Saturday’s game will see the Liverpool manager forced into making at least one change to his starting side, with Daniel Sturridge frustratingly returning from the dreaded international duty injured and he is subsequently ruled out of action for a few weeks as a result.
There are question marks too over Joe Allen’s availability for the game after the Welsh midfielder also reported back to Melwood from international duty with an ankle problem after playing in Wales 2-1 win in Andorra on a terrible 3G, Powerleague-style surface.
Injury misery continues to pile up for Rodgers, with Emre Can becoming the third victim of the international fixtures, where he picked up an ankle injury that is set to rule the versatile German out for up to six weeks.
Away from the bad news with injuries, Jordan Henderson looks set to be available to continue in midfield after playing the full 90 minutes against Switzerland, despite limping out of England training last Sunday after landing awkwardly on his ankle.
More good news comes from Rodgers confirming that Adam Lallana is fit to play after a frustrating start to life on Merseyside has yet to see him make an appearance for the club, but it could be a little too early for the former Southampton man – who is sure to be short of match sharpness – to be involved from the start
Fabio Borini could also find himself involved with the squad despite the Italian having looked completely out of the reckoning at Anfield, particularly if Rodgers decides to continue with the 4-diamond midfield-2 formation.
The Team
The back five is set to remain unchanged from the defensive line the kept a clean sheet at White Hart Lane in the last league fixture and that would see Javier Manquillo line up at right back with Dejan Lovren partnering Mamadou Sakho in the centre of defence and Alberto Moreno continuing at left back.
With Henderson seemingly fit for the match Rodgers is likely to stick with the England international and he is likely to be joined by Steven Gerrard but with Allen’s fitness to be assessed in the lead up to the match, Philippe Coutinho could come into the side in a preferred central midfield position.
There are choices to be made for the positions at the top of the diamond and up front with Sturridge unavailable.
Raheem Sterling operated centrally behind the England striker and Mario Balotelli to devastating effect in north London, but with the recently turned 25-year-old out and Rickie Lambert and Fabio Borini as the next genuine striking options, Rodgers could opt to play Sterling himself higher up as an unorthodox forward alongside the £16million Italian.
Pushing Sterling into the two man forward line would free up the space at the tip of the diamond – a position that could be filled by Coutinho if Allen does recover to keep his place in midfield – or the fitter Lazar Markovic to make his first Liverpool start, over the returning Lallana who should begin on the bench.
Alternatively, Rodgers could of course choose to keep Sterling where he is excelling and hand Lambert the first start of his Liverpool career alongside Balotelli or even play Borini alongside his fellow countryman creating a lively and mobile partnership.
The Line-up
The possibilities for Rodgers are almost limitless ahead of the clash. But if he does decide to stick to the 4-diamond midfield-2, this is how Liverpool should start the match on Saturday:

Alternatively, the Liverpool boss could opt to utilise the explosiveness and skill within his squad and name an extremely exciting starting team that looks something like this:
Liverpool’s excellent summer transfer window of recruiting quantity and quality was carried out to afford Rodgers the luxury of having many talented players and formations at his disposal.
The Reds’ boss faces a tough decision ahead of the match over whether to start with the diamond formation that has worked so well, or the possibility of reverting back to a 4-3-3.

How Brendan Rodgers could shape Liverpool against Aston Villa – Part 1: Midfield Diamond

We have statistics ahead of every Premier League game this weekend, including a comforting fact for Manchester United ahead of their QPR clash.
At least one of the Premier League's last two 100% records will fall when Chelsea take on Swansea City at Stamford Bridge this weekend, with Liverpool and Aston Villa, who meet at Anfield, two of the teams that could capitalise.
Further down the table, Manchester United will be hoping Radamel Falcao can help ignite their season against QPR, while Everton, Newcastle and Sunderland are among the other teams still looking for a first win.
We take a look at the key Opta statistics ahead of the fourth round of games.
Arsenal v Manchester City
Arsenal won 18 of their first 22 Premier League fixtures against Manchester City but have only won three of the last 12 (D4 L5).
The Citizens have only won one of 17 previous Premier League games away at Arsenal; a 2-0 win in January 2013 (L11 D5).
Indeed, that 2-0 win was also the only time Manchester City have scored more than once in 17 Premier League games at either Highbury or the Emirates.
Danny Welbeck could become only the third player in Premier League history to play for both Arsenal and Manchester United (Mikael Silvestre, Robin van Persie).
The Gunners have won more Premier League games in September than any other Premier League side (48) and also have the best points/game average (2.02).

Diego Costa has scored four goals in three Premier League games; Fernando Torres took 39 games to reach this figure for Chelsea.
